5.0 out of 5 stars Best Deer Hunting Game Yet!, January 21, 2005
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Deer Hunter 2005 (CD-ROM)
What can I say, Deer Hunter 2005 literally blew me away with its fantastic graphics, lifelike AI, and numerous game options. When I first saw the game I assumed it would be terrible based on the last few Deer Hunter games, but then I played the demo and wow what an amazing improvement.

The graphics are simply gorgeous and with a high end video card they really shine. Small weeds and leaves that bend as you move through them among other nice visual touches helps the immersion factor. I have visited many of the places available to hunt in the game and the development team created the levels spot on for the types of foliage and terrain found there.

Another great aspect of the game is the hunter's skill points that get awarded by killing certain amounts of game or by using certain types of weapons. If you increase your tracking skill points for instance, blood trails and tracks appear more frequently which allows you to find that pesky buck you just shot with a longbow.

Yet another great game feature is the inclusion of rare deer to the game, which is a satisfying experience when you become lucky enough to spot and bag one.

Overall Deer Hunter 2005, once the 1.2 patch is applied, is top notch and I really can't foresee myself ever getting bored with this game, unless of course the folks at Atari release Deer Hunter 2006 with similar features and enhancements.

4.0 out of 5 stars This is a good one!, December 10, 2004
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars

This is not the best game ever but I have sat in front of the computer for at least 6 or 7 hours playing the demo over the last month and I'm still having fun. What a lot of people don;t realize is that this game has great AI and it's like real hunting- there aren't hundreds of animals wandering all over- you have to act like a real hunter to be successful. If you want a game where you run around shooting things every 2 minutes don't get it...but just like real hunting it's a rush when you finally find a nice deer after working hard. Decent graphics and sound, AWESOME "bullet cam" feature!!!

Deer Hunting games are easy to come by. Deer Hunting games that go online are not. That's pretty much the reason I even checked this game out. To my surprise, there's a ton of gamers still playing this game online, thanks to GameSpy and their endless list of PC servers.

The graphics in this game aren't that terrible, however, they use nothing more than basic textures, lighting, and physics. The animations are pretty funny, but I can't really tell if that's intentional. The character models are hilarious, one of them looks like a complete redneck, complete with a lack of chin. The way the characters move will often make you laugh. The animals are pretty decently detailed. You can at least tell where you shot a deer or turkey. The one really neat feature is the bullet-time (ie: Matrix) effect when you get a good kill shot on an animal. Cracking open a skull of a deer with a single rifle bullet is worthy of sitting back to pop you open a cold one. One of the best things is laying deer food, which is textured to look like a human just pooped on the green textures. I think the game would have been a little better if they'd put some grass to hid in or put some more trees. If anything, the worst thing about the graphics is the lack of line of sight. Think Turok with contacts. There's still a nice surrounding of fog.

The sounds are horrible, at least in the menu. The looped country guitars get very old fast, but do make you crack a smile the first time you hear it. The gun sounds are decent, mainly the shotgun. Nothing says hunting like a double barrel blasting in the air, and hearing birds scatter. The mixture of some of the sounds don't match well with the animations. Most recognized is the antlers. Knocking them together sounds alright, but it never matches with what the player sees.

Probably the worst part of the game is the mechanics. Deer are everywhere so it's not like you really need to wait around. Just spawn somewhere, run around like crazy, and you'll run into something. Does, usually, but still, they make for great target practice. It really ruins the fill. The game has a lot of hunting features such as pee spray and other hunting things, but they're useless since there's just deer spawning like rabbits in this game. One cool thing is the RPG elements in the game. You don't get stats every rank, but you do get to spec your guy with his own gear and his own skills such as tracking or strength.

However, with some of the goofyness of the game, the game really holds it's own just because it features multiplayer. There's a lot better hunting games out there, and a lot of games that features better graphics, better animations, better sounds, and tons more animals and realism. Nothing will last as long as Deer Hunter 2005 though since this is the game that at least features multiplayer so you can hunt with friends or see how many servers ban you from shooting your fellow hunters.

5.0 out of 5 stars DH2005 vs. theHunter, May 27, 2011

I'm a huge hunting game fan and an avid real life hunter. It's rare when you come across
a hunting game that actually got it right. I've played everything from Cabelas to Hunting Unlimited.
I was also a long time player of the free to play (and also to buy) theHunter. But out of all the hunting games that i've played over 7 or so years, Deer Hunter 2005 just keeps on amazing me. I look for realism, as much as possible while still making the game enjoyable. DH2005 has almost a perfect balance of both. This IS the most realistic hunting game you'll ever play as far as how the deer act and react with each other, and their environment. Sure the graphics are slightly outdated, but they still hold their own. TheHunter yes is definitely more pretty to look at; the environments in that game are absolutely beautiful, but how the animals act in that game just don't feel as natural or as realistic as DH2005. Now as far as the equipment goes theHunter
really did a good job, but so did DH2005. The muzzleloader for instance in DH2005 is extremely realistic as to how to fires, loads, and sounds (i've shot them many times in RL).

But overall, DH2005 will give you a more memorable experience than theHunter. I know, i experienced both games. MANY hours on both games. And even though theHunter will definitely draw your attention for awhile, you'll just
end up going back to DH2005 (if you're a RL hunter like me and prefer animal realism) like i did.

It's sad though because i have a feeling no other game will ever be like DH2005, theHunter may one day grasp what the people behind DH2005 did, but currently it isn't looking that way.

If you love the outdoors and hunting, get this game! It's cheap, and will make you get even more itchy in your pants for hunting season!

4.0 out of 5 stars Close to the real thing, January 19, 2009

This is a good hunting game, there are a few draw backs that I didn't see in reviews when I bought it, so I'll try and cover those for perspective buyers. At high to max resalution the back ground flickers a little while scanning the horizion with the binoculars. Only bucks count on incresing your hunters skill. There is other game to shoot besides the different deer specis, such as Turkey,Racoon,Badger,Hare,Rabbit,Squirel, and Monitor Lizzard. But you can not collect any of these animals and display them in your trophy room.

This game will work on XP if you download the patch from Atari, but will not work on Vista with or without patch. Even running the game with backwards compatibility with in Vista results in errors and computer Lock up.I read in a forum that there was a Vista patch for the game but was unable to locate one for download. On XP All the features work execpt online game play, locks up your system and the only way to solve the problem was a system reset(reboot). As nice feature of the game is the ability to download and use custom maps. The draw back is that if you have different logons on XP that maps downloaded for one profile is not available for any of the others. You can also download a map editor to create and modify maps with, but I found the user interface to be complicated and hard to use, especially for a novice computer user.

Other than these issues the game is what you would expect it to be. I would recommend this game to anyone that enjoys the thrill of hunting in the non-hunting season. Hope this review helps you to decide wheter this is the right game for you and your computer.

nice game, lots of guns or bows to use, different places to hunt. only drawback that i see is no way to back up progress to move to another computer to save game progress. fun to play for hours and not too easy so it makes it a challange as well.
