4.0 out of 5 stars Deer Hunter 5 ...buggy, but good!
I picked up my copy of DH5 at the store the other week and have been playing it everyday since. Well, everyday since I updated my video card, that is. Deer Hunter 5 is a massive improvement over Deer Hunter 4 in visuals and the form and function of the deer. It is the most realistic hunting program yet. However the glitches, even after the patches, continue to remind you that it is just a program. I picked up my copy of DH5 at the store the other week and have been playing it everyday since. Well, everyday since I updated my video card, that is. Apparently, the game has several glitches in it, one of which is that it isn't working with certain types of video cards, such as Voodoo 3 and earlier, and some Intel cards. The game also contains numerous other glitches, but nothing that really takes away from the game.

As for the game, it is basically an updated version of DH4, with new maps and animals (bear, elk, mountain lion) and nicer graphics. It also has a season mode where you can manage deer, watching them grow season to season. Also included in the game are the rarities from DH4, like Albino, Unicorn, and Demon deer! Gone from the game are the World Record bucks, which have been replaced with the easier to find SSTS (Sunstorm Trophy Scoring) Trophies.

All in all, it's a great game and I do recommend it, despite it's glitches. However, Sunstorm is suppose to be releasing a patch anytime now to help solve the glitch problems and once they do, I expect this game to be one of the best Deer Hunting sims on the market, if not THE best!

Deer Hunter 5 is a massive improvement over Deer Hunter 4 in visuals and the form and function of the deer. It is the most realistic hunting program yet. However the glitches, even after the patches, continue to remind you that it is just a program. First off the describe scene button on the game, which you need to use if you want to have some idea of the size of deer you are aiming at, gives wrong or useless advice. The hunt at dawn setting for fall and winter is black as night making it impossible to hunt. You have dangerous creatures setting were you can be killed by a wondering bear. I have been killed twice and both times the bear was invisible. In primitive weapons mode the muzzle-loaded weapon miss fires enough to become very annoying, and the compound bow's pin settings put the "p" in primitive.

If you are already a lover of (or addicted to) hunting games, then these are minor annoyances, but if you are new to the Deer Hunter series, then I would suggest that you look for a program with a better performance record.

This Game brings hunting on the computer to a new level. I am amazed by the amount of different looking deer and all the new graphics. I have DH3 and I thought that was great! Now Wizard Works hit the mark again with DH5. I will buy new versions as they come out. If you are a hunter, or just like to shoot mass quanities of deer, then this game is for you. Thanks Wizard Works! Kepp it coming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really Great Game!, January 9, 2003
This review is from: Deer Hunter 5 (CD-ROM)
I have two Dell computers and the game works fine on both of them. On my Inspiron 4000 laptop the graphics aren't that great because of it's integrated 8MB of video memory but it's still fun to play. On my new Dimension 8250 this game is awsome! Graphics are the best I've ever seen on a hunting game. Several weapons and accessories to choose from, plus an extensive selection of animals to hunt, give you an endless choice of hunting situations. I highly recommend this game to all fellow hunters because it keeps you in the woods year round.

1.0 out of 5 stars WILL NOT WORK, November 8, 2001
This review is from: Deer Hunter 5 (CD-ROM)
It will not run on the Dell computers. It would not run after loading and it just freezes up or goes back to the front page of my computer.I have a 400 dimension XPS R400. My brother in law bought the deer hunter 5 also and it would not run on his 450 machine and he tried it on his 933mhz machine and it would not run on that one either and that is a new machine. I have not been able to run the game yet. Never had any problems with the other deer hunter games.

This game requires fast and good computers. Not every computer has a video card, 400MHz. And it is huge. It took me 30 minutes to install it.

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Deer Hunter 5 (CD-ROM)
I'm a GIRL and I love hunting games! This is a must for hunting fanatics. Good graphics, realalistic sounds, never the same.
Cons: Sometimes the deer just DISAPEARE. Sometimes you'll see foot prints walking towards you... The elk are almost imposible to shoot! You need to shoot them at a run.
I gave it four stars because I can't find any bears!!!! Help! Tell me how to bring in a bear. The DISCRIBE SCENE button always says theres a bear and I can't see one! Help!

1.0 out of 5 stars A Christmas dissapointment, December 28, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Deer Hunter 5 (CD-ROM)
My family looked forward to the new Deer Hunter game, but what a sad thing on Christmas day when we realized that it wouldn't play on our new Dell computer. It installed ok, but that was the end of it...the cursor jumped around and wouldn't let us go anywhere. I had read a few reviews about not being able to play the game on a Dell, but didn't think this would be the case because we have had no trouble with other Deer Hunter games...boy was I wrong. I gave it a 1 star because 0 wasn't a choice.
