4.0 out of 5 stars Cavatina Is The Best!
This album is simply excellent! Undoubtedly already enshrined in the pantheon of the all-time great film soundtracks, Deer Hunter's main theme, the distinguished John William's Cavatina, is magnificently touching, emotional and inescapably heartrending. I wonder why it wasn't awarded the Best score at the 1978 Oscars. The other tunes, the backups, complement Cavatina...

2.0 out of 5 stars Favorite song not on the soundtrack
The scene when they're in the bar, just before they leave for vietnam, there's an emotional piano instrumental. Its not on the soundtrack, so if you're looking for it, its by Frederic Chopin, called Nocturne Number 6, Opus 15-3, in g minor.

I wonder why it wasn't awarded the Best score at the 1978 Oscars. The other tunes, the backups, complement Cavatina perfectly, capping off a tremendous album. One flaw though: the album should have included Frankie Valli's signature song, Can'T Take my Eyes Off You and I deducted 1 star for that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply magnificent..., March 19, 2001

After listening to this soundtrack, I finally realized what truly made The Deer Hunter movie so special. Sure, the story was riveting, and the actors were at their individual best in this Academy Award winning film, and the settings (both Vietnam AND the dirty, gray cold steel town) were so realistic.

But...

Watching the movie in the theater some 24 years ago, I now remember the beautiful music. The timely, sweet theme "Cavatina", the orthodox Catholic church hymns, and yes, even the Frankie Vallie "Can't Take My Eyes Off of You" (missing from the sound track).

It's enough to make you just stop... and think about the lives of those innocent men and how their lives changed in a flash when they went to Vietnam.

Beautiful, touching and moving music, all part of one of the best motion pictures ever to see the silver screen. Even if you've never seen the movie, GET THIS CD... and go rent the movie, too!

2.0 out of 5 stars A Huge Disappointment for a wonderful movie score, February 14, 2005
This review is from: Deer Hunter: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
All I can say is what a ripoff. I think this soundtrack runs less than 15 minutes--what a lost opportunity. Not only are the scores way too short--but the most two vital songs/socres--"I Love you Baby--not only at the tavern but also as part of the wedding festivals--and even more importantly, the score whose name I don't know--after the deer hunt and the most poignant moment in the films--the score in the tavern where a classical piece is played and all the boys go into the deepest moments of intimacy in the entire film--none of this is part of the sound track.

I love the film, looked forward to the soundtrack--and felt I (and others) were totally ripped off.

3.0 out of 5 stars what a truly haunting score, May 28, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Deer Hunter: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Audio CD)
This motion picture had such an emotional impact on me when I saw it back in the early '80s that it left me totally drained, and I was never able to get the haunting guitar out of my head.

As far as the music goes on this CD, it wasn't the entire score I was in love with (& needed to hear again), but a yearning, instead, to hear John "Guitar" Williams' awesome guitar playing.

Unfortunately, you only get three numbers by this great guitarist, three. I still love what the man does, but it is hardly enough.

I guess I'll have to either keep playing the same three tunes over and over, or else buy some more CDs by him.
