Good beginer book,
This review is from: Deer Hunting 101: The Beginner's Guide to Deer Hunting (Paperback)
This is a book for the novice that touches on things without going into great detail (see the negative review about moon phases mentioned but not discused in detail). I read the book as a new hunter and I believe I got a doe partly because of this book. If you have read alot of books on hunting, you will not find anything new. But if you PLAN to read alot of books on hunting, or just read one, this is not a bad place to start.

2008 was my first year trying deer hunting, and I hoped this book would give me some additional knowledge to supplement what I had learned from friends and other sources. Instead this book proselytizes - apparently only God-fearin' people can successfully hunt deer. Much in the way of snide remarks, not so much in the way of education. An example, the author refers to the importance of the phase of the moon... but never actually mentions which phases are best, or anything else at all about moon phases.
Avoid this book if you are interested in entering the world of deer hunting. I wish I had avoided it. Not even worth being given away free. To all reading the reviews - good luck in your next hunt!

This is one of the few books I have ever purchased that I wish I had not. Sure, it is for the beginner, but it is written at such a 2nd grade level that it is hard to tolerate. Unless perhaps you are in grade school. Potential buyers should note that the book is really a large pamphlet that the author tried to inflate into a book--the pages are small, the print large, the margins wide--the total text in here could fit in 30 pages formatted like most hunting books. The book is so full of grammatical errors, misspellings, and misused words that it is hard to see how it ever got into print. Much of the information is suspect, and it is poorly organized. His choice of what to include and not include is rather random and he barely mentions important topics, like deer diet and behavior. I would definitely not recommend this book to a beginning hunter. And while I respect his religious views, the proselytizing gets tiresome and does not belong in a book on deer hunting.

I read this book as a beginner's intro for hunting, for that purpose it fit the bill. It was definitely a complete beginner intro to the sport just as the title implies. I definitely would recommend the author revise it into a new edition and fix some of the mistakes in the book. I found several editing errors and felt that the section on the phases of the moon needed to be expanded. There were a couple other sections that will leave you with questions about what the author is talking about. The photos and diagrams needed to be of better quality because they really take away from the quality of the book. Other than those issues, I liked the book but will definitely need to read another to fill in the gaps. Also as of 11/27/10 the author's website was no longer available and he has not apparently written any other books on the topic.

This book was a good read. It will teach you the very basics of hunting but not how to become a hunter. What i mean is if you are looking for a book that will teach you specifics like hunting etiquette or which rifle to use or things like that then this is not it. This book will give you a very broad idea of what hunting is like hence the title "Deer Hunting 101". If, like me, you have no hunting experience, this book is a good buy but it won't be the only reference that you will need.

This is a decent book for the beginning hunter. Not much will appeal to the more advanced hunter. Easy to read, finished it in about 2 hours.
