Product Description

<ul type="circle">America's best selling tanning guide, now on video!
  • Crucial if you don't have access to hands-on instruction
  • Helps you see how to do each step of the wet-scrape process
  • Up-to-date with the latest info and most efficient methods
  • More than two hours of detailed, expert, step-by-step instruction

Two years in the making, this video is easily the most detailed, comprehensive and easy to follow guide to brain tanning. Novices get to see what each step looks like: what it looks like when the grain is coming off properly, how much effort goes into softening, what different odd textures on the skin mean, what good, pumping smoke looks like and on and on. This kind of stuff is incredibly helpful in learning this tactile art.

Experienced tanners will appreciate learning the tweaks and improvements that Matt has learned in the six years since he wrote Deerskins into Buckskins (and received ideas and feedback from thousands of tanners); including the 15 minute step that makes a whole series of improvements in the process (easier, more thorough brain penetration, easier to soften hides, and hides that turn out incredibly, incredibly, soft in the end). We guarantee that you'll learn a lot from this video!

I found the video very informative and helpful in learning how to make buckskins. It really shortened the learning curve by giving step by step instructions and tips on how things are done. I would recomend this material to anyone interested in learning this skill.

I have read the Deerskins into Buckskins book by the same author and the book is very good but the DVD is 100 time better!! Matt goes through every step in the process showing you the right way to do it and how to correct mistakes. He also shows alternatives methods for the steps that allow it like using soap and oil or eggs as replacements for brains. He also shows all of the little things that are hard to describe in words like how the hide should look at the end of each step or how much pressure to use when stretching the hide. I can't wait to get out and try making buckskin again!

I have seen similar DVDs marketed to this audience that look like nothing more than home movies but this DVD is very well done. I noticed some skipping (brief halts) during the opening title but after that the DVD played fine. The audio and picture were very clear and Matt was always easy to understand. My wife is not into brain tainning but she watched the DVD with me and said it was like watching the Discovery Channel. I would call that pretty high praise.

I had the bright idea to try tanning for the first time over the Christmas holidays. I read all I could find and bought this video. If you want to see step by step what to do, this is a good video. We ended up using the Lutan-F tanning process but this video was very helpful to watch the steps regardless of the chemicals or natural process used. Matt is pretty entertaining.

If you are looking to learn how to tan or brain tan a hide and make great buckskin, then this DVD is for you. This video is very detailed and put together well. I strongly recommend the DVD over the book.

The DVD is a great companion to Matt's book. The video lets you see things that the book just can't convey. I would probably choose the book over the DVD if I had to choose one or the other, but I think it really just comes down to personal style of learning. My advice would be to get both if you can afford it. Even if you have never tanned a buckskin, either one will teach you how to get the job done from start to finish.

There's simply no better word. Awesome. I've been skinning deer all my life, but I've never made buckskin. After watching Matt's video, I feel like I've been doing it all my life. It's extremely informative, leaves nothing out and is of the highest video quality. If you're interested int he subject matter, do yourself a favor and get this DVD.

Fits nicely with Matt's dvd. You get the visual along with the details of the book. The second edition portion is worth the price of the book. I have brain tanned with the native Americans useing primitive tools and Matt has made it easier even though the process is pretty much the same. Highly recommend both.

I haven't tried tanning any hides with these methods yet because we are in the depths of winter, but the steps seem well explained and pretty straight forward. He also seems to cover in detail what the problem may be if things don't seem right with the hide you are working on.
