4.0 out of 5 stars Thinking man's jazz, January 27, 2007
This review is from: Deez To Blues (Audio CD)
I was familiar with Mario Pavone through his work with the late Thomas Chapin, however it was after seeing him perform locally a few years back with a group he shares with Michael Musillami that my interest in his music was galvanized.

'Deez' is Pavone's 17th CD as a leader/co-leader, and the third to feature trumpeter Steve Bernstein's arrangements.

Featuring six new compositions, Pavone returns to a sextet format, a group size that he has explored to great effect on some of his previous outings.

Rounded out by a traditional rhythm section of piano and drums, the sonic palette is rife with possibilities as Bernstein is joined on the front-line by violin and/or tuba, baritone sax or bass clarinet.

As a composer, Pavone turns tradition upside-down by putting the rhythm section at the center while casting the traditional lead instruments in a supporting role. The end result is a palpable tension, where 'outside' lurks around every corner.

From the insistent swing of 'Ocbo' to the gentle beauty and lyricism of 'Day of the Dark Bright Light,' Pavone has crafted yet another gem. If you have yet to discover this stalwart of the New York City scene, now is the time and this is the place.

4.0 out of 5 stars Once again, Pavone delivers the goods, August 19, 2006

This review is from: Deez To Blues (Audio CD)
Mario Pavone puts his bass and Peter Madsen's piano at the front of these bold, yet frequently tuneful, arrangements. Though his sextet teems with virtuosos (including old friend drummer Michael Sarin from the Thomas Chapin Trio), no one player dominates this set. Instead, the cerebral improvisations of each individual bob, weave, and interlock within the collective, soulful swing that emerges on nearly every track. Another worthwhile release in a legendary forty-year career!
