Unusual twist of hip-hop and wrestling, but it works!,
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Def Jam: Fight For NY (Video Game)
A year after the out-of-the-blue sucess of Def Jam Vendetta, EA Games releases, Def Jam Fight For NY, with similiar results. Def Jam Fight For NY is an excellent wrestling game with tons of replay value, and a cool hip-hop influenced storyline to boot.
Notice how I referred to the game as a "wrestling" game? Unlike the game suggests, Def Jam Fight For NY is predominantly a WRESTLING game. The fighting system is based upon performing grapples and simple strikes, and performing combos and special moves. With so many moves to choose from and unlock, the fighting system is suprisingly deep, but the fights get just a bit repetitive after a while. Def Jam Fight For NY story mode begins when D-Mob is being taken away by the boys in blue, when suddenly, a mysterious car topples the police cruiser and allows D-Mob to escape. The driver of the mysterious car, as you soon learn, is you, and you then create the appearance of your character using a police composite sketch, a pretty clever way to create your character. D-Mob then asks you to join their force of fighters to try and take over the whole fighting circuit of the city. There are over 40 Def Jam labelmates appearing in the game, all appearing fighters in the game. Snoop Dogg, the Top Dogg (naturally) of the opposing gang, with Busta Rhymes, Fat Joe and many others on his side, while your crew consists of the likes of Method Man, Redman and a few others. As the story progresses and you win fights, you can earn cash to spend on new clothes for your character, supplied by urban name-brands like Sean John, State Property, Joker, Enyce, and Ecko to name a few, new hairstyles for you character, tattoos, shoes, and many other accessories for you character to rock, and of course, there are many others to unlock as you progress through the story. The story mode is long and deep, with a compelling story complete with story twists, and takes a lengthy 8 hours of play to complete. Of course, once you beat the story mode, you'll be coming back for more. As usual, there are many hip-hop tunes included in the game, courtesy of Def Jam of course, and multiplayer action is also included. Fans of wrestling, wrestling games, or hip-hop would find this game very appealing.

BLAZING UP THE CHARTS...
Well, Def Jam Vendetta is back, but, this time, it's "The Fight for New York"... This game has it all... A great storymode, an awesome multiplayer mode, and more options than you'll know what to do with... You can create your own character and guide him through different levels/events that will score you money/experience points/girlfriends/etc... You can use your money/experience points to unlock new characters/levels, bling bling ; ), secret moves, etc. This game is very deep, and it will keep you busy for a while, trying to unlock everything... The difficulty level is adjustable, so, you will not get bored fighting at the same level... The control is great, the player models are seamless, and the levels are well laid out... I highly recommend this game for anyone who is a fan of wrestling/fighting games/or just the hip hop industry in general. (so you can fight as your favorite entertainer)

Once you finish Def Jam: Fight for NY there's not much reason to go back to it. But as a VS game it's one of the best. I'm so sick and tired of utterly endless Tekken/MK/Soul Calibre/etc variations with effects and moves that are far too fantastical. Def Jam gives us real, bloody, bone-crunching action with characters we know and recognize from real life. For those of you who like this simple form of gameplay I urge you to get this game above all.
The Pros: Amazing graphics. Simply GREAT music. Grim satisfaction in breaking an opponents bones. Cool finishing moves and slo-mo shots. Involving cut-scenes. Gorgeous girls. Henry Rollins. The Cons: Incredibly linear story progression. Far too many long loading times. Massive range of clothing that differs little. Same for tattoos. And jewelery. Weapons too difficult to pick up (if you stand over it and hit the pick-up button your character will often foolishly grab at a non-nearby opponent instead of the weapon). Poor crowd animation. No opportunity to customize player name, resulting in bland text when other fighters have cool fonts and logos. Repetitive gameplay. Playing areas are not big enough. Could have been gorier. No reason given for main characters motivations/involvement. It took me just over a week to finish this game. And once it's over there's no point in going on unless your playing head to head with a pal. But at that point you're likely to be so advanced in your stats you'll make easy work of them. Rent this game.

It's nice when a company has faith in it's unique franchises. And with a company as big as E.A., you would have faith too. I'm talking about Def Jam: Fight for NY. Boasting some of the biggest names in both hip-hop fashion and talent (who lend their voices to the game) really adds to the authenticity of the culture the game portrays. The fighting engine is easily compared to the classic wrestling titles on the N64. This is a good thing, as some will say these are some of the best games of the genre. There are 5 fighting styles, which as you progress, allow mixing between them. With unlockable's including wrestlers, venues, and merchandise, there is plenty to keep you playing. Fans of fighters and hip-hop shouldn't miss this one.

Great graphics and movements. Very fun on history mode, after that turns bored for a single person, but for 2 players is great.

this is one of tha best games i ever played. its so addicting!!
when i first brought it home i just thought i would try it out to see what its like for a couple minutes and tha next thing i kno its like 3 hours later. for tha story, u gotta create a character first, then go to different fights to earn money for clothes, jewelry, tattoos, etc. they got a pretty good selection also. u also earn points to either improve your skills or learn a new technique so u can do certain things u couldnt do before. u even get to chose a gf... a good selection there too. just tha story alone is great and definitly worth tha money u pay for tha game. an besides that theres also just an arcade-type mode which is also great. there are many different rappers u can chose from, having a pretty good selection with rappers such as capone, joe budden, scarface, sticky fingaz, xzibit, prodigy, havoc, nore.... altogether, i highly recommend this game to anybody.

I've just gotten this game and it is awesome. what the most cool thing about it is you're not in the ring. you can choose to be in a train station, burning warehouse, ect. Right now my favorite fighters are ludacris, bubba sparxxx, and proffesional break dancer crazy legs. i recommend it to all people who like fighting games!

Def Jam: Fight for NY is a sequel to the game Def Jam: Vendetta, which was a great wrestling game. It had amazing gameplay, graphics, and some pretty good music.
Fight for NY has even better gameplay, much improved graphics, better music, more selectable characters, more arenas to fight in, and a LOT more violence (Vendetta was rated T, Fight for NY is rated M) One example is in the underground subway station battle arena. As you are fighting, you can knock your opponent into tracks, allowing him to be runover by a train. There's also a LOT of swearing (in the story as well as some in the music) If you have played any wrestling games before, this will be similar to it. Except instead of playing as your more traditional wrestlers, the characters include people from the Def Jam record label such as Ludacris, Fat Joe, Method Man, Busta Rhymes, etc. As far as the game goes, you customize your character throughout the story. You can learn 3 out of 5 different fighting types which include Martial Arts, Submission, Wrestling, Kick-Boxing, and Street Fighting. Each style has their own pros and cons. As you progress through the story, you can upgrade your character via the gym and make customize how he looks by buying different clothes. There are many street brands to buy from such as Ecko. You can also buy "bling" for your character. The bigger the bling, the bigger and happier your crowds will be. The crowds can help you out at times during fights. For example, if you push your opponent into the crowd during a fight, they will sometimes gang up on him for some damage or they will just throw him back at you, allowing you to perform a huge move for some hefty damage. Lastly, each character has 1 or 2 special moves (called "blazin" moves). These do LOADS of damage to your opponent and will most likely finish them if they already took some damage. Once you activate your characters blazin move, a cinematic will take place, similar to that of the Mortal Kombat fatalities. Keep in mind these blazin moves are more violent and intense than any of the other moves. (For example, DMX will grapple your opponent, break their arms, and snap their neck) All in all a good game if you're a fan of hip-hop / rapper / fighting / wrestling game I suggest you get this game if you can stand the violence.

this game looks phat man. they have tons of new rappers in it including bubba sparxxx, snoop dogg, busta ryhmes, xzibit and freeway. they also have rappers from the first one like ludacris, method, and redman. i hope they have DMX back(he is my favorite rapper.) even though he's had trouble with def jam lately. they have close to 40 rapppers in this game, while the first one had i think only 12. in this one they have a rapper as the bad guy (snoop dogg) instead of the first one where they had a made up bad guy(d-mob). i know i'm gonna get this when it comes out!
