If your a real Def Jux fan then you already have almost every song on this album, if your new to Def Jux then you should pick this up as an introduction to a great hip hop label.

def jux presents one half-hour of the best underground hip-hop since rawkus left the minors. unfortunately, it's likely to be the last tracks to be released by company flow because they split-up in late 2000. at the same time, cannibal ox proves that they are ready to pick up where the pioneering company flow left off. of course, with el-p (company flow) producing all of the cannibal ox tracks, you know that it will have the same gritty, urban, chaotic sound that company flow was renown for. as most underground heads will say though, it's the lyricism that truly shines on this release. besides having a sick flow, vast aire and shamar of cannibal ox absolutely kill their two tracks, especially "iron galaxy" which has a spaced-out beat and ill lyrics about living/growing-up in new york.

"you were a still born baby/ mother didn't want you, but you were still born/ boy meets world, of course his pops is gone/ what you figure?/ that chalky outline on the ground is a father figure?/ so he steps to the next stencil/ that's a hustler infested with money and diamond cluster/ let's talk in layman terms/ rotten apples and big worms/ early birds and poachers/ new york is evil at it's core/ so those who have more then them, prepare to be victims." - iron galaxy, cannibal ox

el-p flexes his lyrical prowess on this release as well, showing that his unique machine-gun flow can handily carry a track without former partner mr. len. on "simple", el-p sends the rest of the industry packing stating, "running around downtown brooklyn getting chased by the big kids/ now as a man, i don't run much/ still have the same clique/ there are very few people i meet in this world that can measure up with..."

as a lyricist, aesop rock rocks "kill em all" over a simple beat, bass, and scratch track. this track is a great contrast to the heavily produced el-p tracks, with aesop showing that he is also a talented emcee. RJD2 has an instrumental track that is a rocking interlude between the gritty company flow and cannibal ox beats. the guitar, horns, and flute loops sound great between the other hard-hitting vocal tracks.

all-in-all, watch out for def jux. these cats are helping to re-invent hip-hop for the new millennium. kudos to company flow for getting the label together and bringing out incredible talent like cannibal ox, mr. lif, aesop rock, and RJD2.

El-P has always had a unique talent in his lyrics and now in his production. Even though with the loss of Mr. Len and Big Jus he still brings a style very similar to the Company Flow from 'Fun Crusher Plus' days... I knew what to expect from El-P so I got a first taste of Cannibal OX and I was blown away too. Especially on the best track on the EP, "Iron Galaxy", which sounds futuristic with is music, but the lyrics really talk about harsh city and family life. Again Cannibal OX drops more dope material with "Straight Off The D.I.C."... Aesop Rock hit me with a good track "Kill Em All" about slavery and dropping some nice lines in it 'I'd rather be the wisher/ instead of the penny inside the well'. "Silver Fox" was a nice instrumental meant just to listen to not to rap over...

Not a bad track on this CD. Only problem I had with it was that I paid $13 for it when it was really worth an EP price of $8, but I'll get over it... DOPE MATERIAL EXPECT MORE OFF DEF JUX LATER ON...

Nothing chilled here, no hooks, melodies or female vocals....Just ill deliveries and the crazy beats that we expect from the ex Company Flow member El-P, and his new signings Cannibal Ox. If you were a fan of his previous work-those heavy lyrical onslaughts coupled with sick mind bogglingly layered beats you have to by this!! You can't helped to be sucked into this kind of hip-hop, the only way I can describe it is nastily majestic. Don't think the split of Co Flow means the end of anything- Def Jux has taken over the torch triumphantly...all hail the king EL-P!!!!!

This album is raw. There is no other way to explain it. I like probably half of the cd's I ever purchase, and rarely do I like something a given artist has done on more than one album, but I can state unequivocally that Company Flow et. al. put 110% into every song that they create. And don't let the small number of tracks fool you, these are long cuts that provide plenty of listening time. I'm glad to see that the coflo tradition is alive and kicking.

DEFJUX PRESENTS COMPANY FLOW, CANNIBAL OX AESOP ROCK AND RJD2 IS BANGING. FROM THE FIRST TRACK DPA(AS SEEN ON TV) EL-P SHOWS WHY HE IS ONE OF THE ILLIST PRODUCERS OUT THERE. EL-P PRODUCERS 5 OF THE 7 JOINTS ON THIS EP AND ALL ARE BANGING. CANNIBAL OX JOINTS ARE BANGING ALSO AND THE INTRUMENTAL RJD2 TRACK IS AN ILL BEAT. AESOP ROCK ALSO ON A TRACK KILL EM ALL WHICH IS ILL. EL-P IS SO UNDERRATED AS AN MC HE IS VERY COMPLEX SO YOU REALLY HAVE TO LISTEN TO THE ALBUM TO UNDERSTAND HIS ILL LYRICS. THIS EP IS SO FAR THE BEST THING I HEARD FROM HIP HOP THIS YEAR SO FAR ALONG WITH THAT SELF SCIENTIFIC ALBUM. IF YOU LIKE RAW UNDERGROUND COMPLEX HIP HOP WITH SOME OF THE BEST PRODUCTION YOU CAN HEAR PICK THIS JOINT UP. BUT IF YOU ARE SIMPLE MINDED STICK TO ROCCAFELLA RUFF RIDERS AND TRICK DADDY THIS IS NOT FOR YOU. ALSO PICK UP DEF JUX'S MR. LIF EP WHICH CAME OUT IN NOVEMBER. THAT IS ALSO BANGING UNDERGROUND. CAN'T WAIT FOR CANNIBAL OX AND EL-P SOLO ALBUMS COMMING SOON.

Not too crazy about the first 2 tracks, but the contributions by Cannibal Ox and RJD2 make this 7 song disc worth every penny. Can Ox should appeal to fans of both indie hip hop and the more thuggish variety, with their gritty beats and suffocating lyrics. RJD2 provides a very pleasant instrumental and El-P expels some ugly demons from within. Aesop Rock also does his thing on "Kill 'Em All." Most importantly, this album is just a taste of what El-P's label will be putting out for years to come. This is like a baseball team with loads of young talent.
