4.0 out of 5 stars Great concept, poor execution, February 27, 2007

This review is from: Defcon 5 (Video Game)
But I like it anyway. This has got to be one of the first games to have come out for the PSX when everything was still in its experimental stages. If they were to recreate this game using modern technology and basic story techniques for plot development, this game would attract a large cult following.

Here is my review: You play as an employee of the Tyron HQ, some kind of corporation that provides weapons and automated self defense machinery for other corps. In the game you learn at the beginning that Tyron is providing such services to the Dynx mining facility contracted to excavate and search for fuel resources on planet 6F. Your senior officer died in an accident and you get promoted as next in command. You are transported by space shuttle from your Mother ship to planet 6F to maintain proper functionality of the Self Defense Computer Systems as the miners get to work. Just don't ever call the miners for help when you find yourself in the middle of an all out invasion, or they will bite your head off saying, "Forgive me if I'm wrong, but I thought that was the responsibility of YOUR facility!"

Great concept, right? I think it is. But the game lacks everywhere else. I will start with the graphics. The Tyron 6F Space Station is HUGE. It has two buildings, The Administrative Building and the Domestic complex, each is 7 stories high. There is a LIMO that can drive you to each building. The Service Levels and Power West and Power East Levels are basement areas. But no matter where you go, everything looks just about the same. Major inattentiveness to detail. And none of this space ever gets put to use. It's just THERE and you are running aimlessly through it all as you are pursued by the intruders. The game would have been much better if there were more sights to see in such a large area.

Once the invasion begins, your only objective is to survive until the rescue shuttle comes to pick you up. That's it. I can beat it in less than 3 hours. I wish there were more objectives.

Survival: In order to survive, you simply need to avoid the intruders, which are huge robots equipped with canons. Prior to their presence in the space station, you can rush your way to the Control Room where the main computer is, and program the gun turrets outside the mining facilities to do certain actions, like specifying the temperature and the amount of damage they should receive before they go into hibernation and undergo auto repairs, instruct them to auto reload and choose what ammunition and missiles they fire. They fire upon the ships and aircrafts of the invaders circling the mining facility. You can also use this computer, the only one in the building that grants this kind of control, to send out androids to either attack the invaders within the complex, or go retrieve information or ammunition from their fallen aircrafts. These actions will determine the ending of the game.

Of course you will need software to do all these things, which is hidden in a number of areas throughout the space station.

Combat with the intruders is to be avoided, making this a strategy game. If you fight them, you will kill a lot of them, but in the end you will die when you cannot find anymore medics in the station. Their number is unlimited. You can avoid them by locking yourself in a room, using any VOS computer to do so, or simply by running the other way when your motion detector senses them. The more you fight them, use your gun, and destroy the robots, the more polluted the air gets in the facility, which could result in death.

For just a few cents, this game is worth the buy. I would like to acknowledge if someone else out there other than myself has actually ENJOYED this game. It uses real live actors to play in some parts, just like that other crazy game, "Psychic Detective," another PSX original.
