4.0 out of 5 stars Great men, not so great women.
I know this is fiction, and I have bought all the books in this series, and the Talion series, and obviously I'm hooked on this writer, but I've got to tell you, when a man says leave me alone over and over again, and a woman doesn't do so,,, then she's a stalker, and I just don't see that as romantic, anymore than I would think it romantic if a man stalked a woman...

3.0 out of 5 stars Best in the Series
The story of Hunter and Tate is the best one in the Paladins of Darkness series. While not one of my favorite series, the books are an enjoyable and quick read

I consider the Black Dagger Brother series by J.R Ward, Dark Hunter Series by Sherrilyn Kenyon and the Immortals After Dark series by Kresley Cole to be 5 star series. Thus, I would rate the Paladins...

The rest of the story made up for the idiocy of the female character.

5.0 out of 5 stars terrific Paladin romantic urban fantasy, February 27, 2010

This review is from: Defeat the Darkness (Paladins of Darkness, Book 6) (Mass Market Paperback)
Devlin Bane is concerned with the instability between Earth and Kalitia especially around volcanoes in the northwest. He asks limping Paladin warrior Hunter Fitzsimon who recently left St. Louis for Washington to investigate especially near Justice Point, where he suspects avaricious folks on both sides of the barrier will destroy anything or anyone for money.

Hunter rents an apartment from tea shop owner Tate Justice. She is curious about her hunk upstairs while he fears his desire for her. Tate follows him into the nearby woods to learn the secrets he strenuously conceals from her. He kisses her senseless, but leaves himself wanting more though he fears he will have to choose between love and his mission; she now knows his secret involves keeping earth safe though she is not sure from what.

This is a terrific Paladin romantic urban fantasy as the hero may have come back from the dead but suffers from PTSD while the heroine will learn the meaning of the full verse from Alice in Wonderland: "curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction it brought him back". Filled with action, anguish and love, fans will enjoy Defeat the Darkness with its dual meaning title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Defeat the Darkness, June 26, 2010
This review is from: Defeat the Darkness (Paladins of Darkness, Book 6) (Mass Market Paperback)
Hunter Fitzsimon is still recovering from his latest death experience. Coming back from death is a normal thing for Paladins, but this was not an ordinary death - Hunter was tortured to death by Kalithians, or Others, as they are more commonly known. This has given Hunter more of a reason to want all Kaliths dead. Just his luck that he has been transferred to an area that has several of them working with the Paladins. Upon arriving, Hunter is assigned to a small stretch of the barrier located in a small town. A relief? Or is it?

Tate Justice runs a teahouse on the bottom floor of a house her uncle left her. Things are going okay, but Tate decides to make a little extra income by renting out the apartment above her garage. However, when her ad is answered, it isn't by a college student like Tate assumed it would be. Instead, the inquiry is from Hunter, a gorgeous man who is obviously healing from some accident. Justice Point is a small and caring town, so Tate can't help herself from keeping an eye on Hunter.

Hunter never expected someone like his landlady, and really didn't expect the attraction that sprang up immediately between them. First thing on Hunter's list is to locate the barrier and then figure out how to do his job without his landlady learning more than she should. When the danger comes, Hunter and Tate end up teaming together, along with the help of both other Paladins and the Kalith Warriors. Hunter will need to deal with his hatred of Others and his fast moving relationship with Tate, or everything might be lost in the final battle.

Love can conquer anything but can it heal the wounded? Tate and Hunter find the answer to this in Defeat the Darkness. Tate just wanted to rent out her garage apartment and ended up with a lifetime adventure. Hunter was sent to a new area to heal and forget, but Justice Point gave him a totally unexpected chance at love. I have loved the Paladins but I think that Hunter had the most to deal with to date. While Hunter's feelings were tough to deal with, I can't think of anyone who could have done a better job than Tate. Even with the normal ups and downs, I thought their relationship was wonderful, and healing to both of them. I also thought they were a kicking team together when the final showdown happened. Defeat the Darkness takes a journey to forever and gives it a rough and tumble path through danger. A keeper, and a great addition to the Paladin series.

This review is from: Defeat the Darkness (Paladins of Darkness, Book 6) (Mass Market Paperback)
The author doesn't break any new ground here, but the book is entertaining throughout. I enjoyed the brooding hero and the fun secondary characters, especially since we get to see Paladins from previous stories - always a treat! My only complaint is about the heroine's obsessive, somewhat irritating, need to be helpful, however, it worked in her favor when it came to winning her man, so...I can forgive that.

Hunter Fitzsimon is a Paladin. A Paladin is a warrior who fights Others in order to protect humans and guards the boundary (The boundary is a barrier that separates our world from the Kalith's. An Other is a Kalith that has gone crazy and murderous). An upside to being a Paladin is you have superior strength, heal quickly and have a longer life span. The downside is you die, over and over again.

When we last saw Hunter he had just been tortured and killed by Others. The injury he sustained to his leg was so severe that he has reoccurring pain in it that gets so bad he can hardly walk. A Paladin's purpose is to guard the barrier and to kill any Other that comes through it. The mental toll of not being able to fight is worse than his physical pain. He is angry and could lose his temper with anyone for any reason. I think he has every right to feel like this. When you are told your whole life you are there to fight and then that is taken from you, who wouldn't be pissed off?

Hunter is sent from Missouri to Seattle in hopes that could some way help his healing. When he gets there the leader of the local Paladins, Devlin, sends him to a small town a few hours out called Justice Point. He is sent there to find out who is smuggling Kaliths and a blue rock that is vital to the Kalith's world over to our side of the boundary. While there Hunter meets Tate Justice. Tate refuses to leave Hunter alone even though he has nothing but rude things to say to her. Tate is sweet, smart and determined not to let Hunter push her away. I like to read about head strong women and warrior men. The men always seem so confused.

While Hunter is switching off between wanting to be around Tate and wanting to put as much distance as he can between them, he is also trying to find out who is behind the boundary activity. He gets help from D.J., Larem, Barak and Penn. D.J. is his usual sarcastic self and Barak always seems so calm and together. It was nice to read a little more about Penn. Before he just seemed to have this dark cloud around him. I'm glad his story will be next. Larem was a nice surprise. I like Barak but I think Larem is my favorite Kalith. Larem is respectful, polite and is an honorable warrior. I liked reading the scenes between him and Hunter. I think he not only helped Hunter with his prejudice towards the Kaliths but he treated Hunter as if he didn't have an injury which was exactly what Hunter needed. Larem's book is another one I look forward to. If there was as scene I could pick to see in real life it would be the one where the huge men were sitting in Tate's tea shop sipping tea from little tea cups. Just reading about it had me cracking up.

5.0 out of 5 stars Paladin romance stabs you through the heart everytime!, March 9, 2010

I love everything Alexis Morgan writes. If you are a sucker for big hunks with swords that are saving our world and sacrificing everything without any recognition from the world you'll love these guys. They are strong, heroic and in desperate need of the love of a good woman. The paranormal world created by Morgan is intriguing and exciting. Defeat the Darkness did not disappoint. Read it. Love it. Then go back and read all of the others in the series and read it again. Then check out her other series the Talions.
