Editorial Reviews

Review

There is a wealth of information here. Practical. Accessible. A workbook that is authoritative and current. Stone assists the reader to see depression as a spiritual crisis, as well as a psychological one. --Harold G. Koenig, M.D., Professor of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, Duke University Medical Center

Defeating Depression not only provides a vocabulary for our most intense emotions and feelings associated with depression, it deciphers the often mysterious return to vitality. The work has quickly become my most effective tool in helping the depressed, their loved ones and education pastoral caregivers. --W. Kyle Fauntleroy, Naval Chaplains School

Right from the beginning of the first page one senses a presence of empowerment and hope for the reader and the gentle yet firm nudge of a voice that beckons, Let s get going . --Douglas M. Ronsheim¸ Executive Director, American Association of Pastoral Counselors

More About the Author

Howard W. Stone Ph.D., is a psychologist, marriage and family therapist, a pastoral counselor, the author or editor of many books in the Fortress Press Creative Pastoral Care and Counseling series, and a professor emeritus at Texas Christian University. Two previous editions of Crisis Counseling have sold 45,000 copies in the United States and has been published in six other countries. In addition, he has written approximately 60 published journal articles and book chapters and has served on four editorial boards of professional journals. In its first two editions, Howard Stone's Crisis Counseling has become a standard text for clergy and other pastoral caregivers and cemented the author's status as one of the leading figures in the field of pastoral counseling. This third edition builds on the strengths of the earlier editions--specifically, an easily grasped and adopted intervention model--and expands it to consider the needs of people facing crisis in a post-9/11, post-Katrina world. With a thoroughly updated bibliography, new case studies, and an expanded focus on suicide, intervention in volatile or hazardous situations, and the personal safety of the caregiver this new edition will continue this title's status as a standard-bearer in the field.

5.0 out of 5 stars Real Help for Real People, October 30, 2007
This review is from: Defeating Depression: Real Help for You and Those Who Love You (Paperback)
This is one of the most helpful books on managing and overcoming depression that I've come across. It's fast-paced and easy to read, and I really like the emphasis on finding practical ways to minimize the symptoms. The author has a very "take action" approach, which I've found to be very useful. I would definitely recommend it to individuals struggling with depression and to those who might have a friend or family member experiencing depression. (Every chapter includes a "take action" section written specifically for family members.)
