I know some people are disappointed by this album and the departure Malefic has made from the sound of "Subliminal Genocide." However, all the basic elements of the Xasthur sound are still here, augmented by live drums (finally!) and sawtoothed guitars that are even more raw here than on previous Xasthur releases. 1.0 out of 5 stars not that good!!
First, I have all the CD's from this band. My favorite ones are subliminal, nocturnal and the latest MCD.
This last one is really disappointing for me. First, he really needs to practice his drumming. Since the drumming is so loose on this record the backbone of the music is gone. Second the guitar sound is very weak compared to all his other albums so nothing...

In general, I don't know why people are so surprised by this. Malefic promised a new sound in interviews leading up to the release of "Defective Epitaph," and I really don't know what else they were expecting. Overall, I find this a very good, solid album, perhaps not as good as "Subliminal Genocide" or "Nocturnal Poisoning," but then again, what is? Very few people can effectively compose such wonderful music in such a short time.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Baddass & Raw Release, September 30, 2007
This review is from: Defective Epitaph (Audio CD)
Very morbid and raw album from Xasthur. This stuff is so sick it's gonna dismantle ya head. The production is very ominous and creepy, and the tempo of the songs is a lot faster than the tempo of the songs in his other releases. Malefic incorporated the use of a cello and real drums to produce this morbid album. The cello blends in real well, with the keyboards and guitars, as a background instrument. Unlike his other albums songs, each song on this album is totally unpredictable. If you want to travel in a beautiful, dark galaxy full of ominous and wondrous planets but don't have the money to pay for such a trip, then order "Defective Epitaph" and enjoy the macabre journey.

This last one is really disappointing for me. First, he really needs to practice his drumming. Since the drumming is so loose on this record the backbone of the music is gone. Second the guitar sound is very weak compared to all his other albums so nothing compansates for the awful drumming.
And the last comment is on the song structures and riffs. This is really primitive compared to what he has done before, its hard to hear layers of guitar, different melodies, chords, quality arrangements vs..vs.
Overall I think this album is rushed and he did not spend enough time on it.
