Local Impact of Civil War, March 1, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Defend the Valley: A Shenandoah Family in the Civil War (Paperback)
A superb blend of contemporary first-person accounts (memoirs, letters, diaries, etc.) that captures the impact of the Civil War on the home front in the Winchester, Virginia, area, as well as life as part of the armed forces of the Confederacy. The principals were present at some of the major events of the Civil War, but the strength of the book is its ability to relate the feel of the times.

A new perspective to civil war history, May 16, 2009
This review is from: Defend the Valley: A Shenandoah Family in the Civil War (Paperback)
This is the first civil war book I have read that gives a bottom up view of the war from the perspective of soldiers and civilians caught up in a conflict they did not ask for but willingly supported. The author is a military historian and a descendant of the central characters, and an excellent writer. The power of the book comes from the first person accounts from letters and memoirs. The author provides context and structure. An excellent read, and very thought provoking.
