Great Game!,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Defender of the Crown (Video Game)
I bought this game about a year ago off amazon.com. I imediatly fell in love with it. It is a good game, though the jousting is a little tricky at first. It is easy to beat, but still really fun. It's one of those games that you can play over and over again, because there are multiple charecters for you to choose from. It has good graphics and okay music. The jousts add an excellent componet to the game; they give you the opportunity to win land and troops. This is a game where the mini-games are important; without fencing and jousting, you'll have a very hard time. This is a great first GBA game to buy; it will introduce the controls and provide hours of fun! No one should miss this game!

GREAT... WHILE IT LASTED (ONE DAY... I AM 14 AND THOUGHT IT WOULD REQUIRE A TON MORE THOUGHT THAN IT DID)PLOT: You are one of the Saxon lords. King Richard is dead, and your deeds shall decide who is put on the throne. Your goal is to become King of England by overthrowing the other Lords. GAMEPLAY: You see a map with territories, each giving a certain amount of income (from 1 to 8 gold a month). You can create and army, hold a jousting tournament(for lands or just fame), or go raiding(for money). You must make sure to be careful with your resources; the other lords are going for the crown as well. To get an army, you must pay 1 gold for each soldier, 8 gold for each night, 15 gold for each catapult, and 20 gold for a castle. You need a lot of soldiers. Be careful... the game saves automatically after every turn, so plan each move carefully. If you buy this, MAKE SURE YOU ENJOY STRATEGY GAMES! ALSO, I finished the game (became the king) in one day of heavy gameplay... there's some stuff still fun about it, but if you're older and think it will be hard it isn't. GRAPHICS: There isn't much need for good graphics, and it isn't anything special (in comparison to Golden Sun), But it is nice in tournaments in raids. (Note: a map doesn't need good graphics) CONS:

Showing Its Age But Still Fun,

Defender of the Crown is a port of an old Amiga, Apple IIgs, and PC game. I played this game often on my Apple. It feels a little weird to be using something other than a mouse for some elements of the game, but it shouldn't be a problem for new players. The game is a bit simplistic by today's standards. The object of the game is to manage your armies and try to gain as much territory as possible. During the game, you might have to joust in tournaments or rescue a princess. If you run low on funds you can try to steal from another castle. You can also ask Robin Hood for help a limited number of times. (I rarely use him so I forget the limit.) I enjoy these retro games that I used to play on my PCs and older consoles. It's nice to see them kept alive.

Always wanted to be a Knight,

Always wanted to be a Knight! Hail and well met, M'Lord! I never did play this game in the old formats so was really pleased to see it offered again for the GBA. It has good graphics and it requires some strategic thought. I must admit I'm not that great at jousting yet but will get the hang of it, after I raid a few more castles. If you like fantasy from the age of chivalry then I recommend this game. So go out into the lists, become unhorsed and you won't even have to scrub mud and rust from your armour!

Do You Have What it Takes to be King?,
By DragonAGB (Phoenix, AZ USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Defender of the Crown (Video Game)
Defender of the Crown for GBA was originally made for PCs during the times when CGA and EGA graphics were the only ones available. The GBA version is definitely enhanced, using better color pallette and some minor changes in the game. The changes do not take away the fun, however. The background story goes like this: You are one of the six Saxons that Richard the Lionheart selected as his elites. After a couple years passed, Richard died and the land fell into chaos. The crown is missing, and with the Normans invading the land, it is now up to you to reunite England and recover the missing crown. Your goal in this game is to destroy all the Normans before they destroy you. Sounds simple? Not really. The lands surrounding the Normans yield very high taxes while the lands around you and the other Saxons do not. Therefore, you have to be witty enough to manage your resources in such a way that you can overcome the Normans. You can win lands through Jousting tournaments, battles via Campaigns, or rescuing fair damsels in distress. Military units are basically divided into three: Soldiers, Knights, and Catapults. Again, strategize carefully since your resources are limited. If you've played the computer game before (I did, and I really liked it), you'll remember for example that you go into swordfights under two conditions: When rescuing a fair damsel in distress and when you go raiding other castles. In the old computer version, you only had to fight about two people. Now you have to defeat about four to five people before you achieve your objective. Jousting now is broken out into point system and you can aim more than just the person's shield to win(like in the old PC version). Overall, this is a really great game that I am sure you will enjoy. If I have to say anything bad about this game, is that it could be a little short. However, you do have replayability value as there are four selectable Saxon knights that you can select as your ruler, and each one of them has his own strengths and weaknesses, which will give you a different twist in the way you play the game.

Traditional Gamer - See game "Golden Sun" for more information. This game really makes the player think about strategy, a very rare item in any Gaming Boy Games. I personally enjoyed the game very much and highy recommended to any person who wants to take thier level of thinking to the next highest level. Beat the Game and I'll b e inpress. I will personal write the game company and tell them all the imporvements that they could make. But, seriously this game is a real challange. You don't get 4 stars from me for nothing!

Im the kind of gamer that likes swordsman or magic games. For example I like and reccomend Golden sun 1 and 2, and Breath of Fire 2. Now it was recently my birthday and I was looking for a GBA game. And as you may have noticed Defender of the Crown caught my eye. Now, I haven't played the game yet, but I've been getting some backround info on it so I dont get a boring game. Defender of the Crown starts of with King Richard basically croaking. He doesn't have a prince to take over his position as king of England so one of his 7 Saton's must take over( a saton is a basically a kings 2nd in command). No one can decide which saton is to be king so England is thrown into a civil war and you,(one of the 7 Satons) must defeat the others to be crowned king. You need to defeat the other satons by creating your own army. Now soldiers arent just free, you must buy them.

The first time i played this game was over 10 years ago on an IBM 286 and also on the Amiga, then again a few years later on the NES, and played them for days and kept going back to them month after month for many years..and then the company then went out of Busines.. Then Suddenly around winter 2000, The company Rose from the ashes with the Origonal Company Creators and Plans for updated versions of all their games in the making. From what i've seen all the new games are worth getting for all game systems and some Compleatly re-written from the ground up for the PC. From what i've seen and played Reciently they are all Worth a Look... or several looks |
