I confess that I did not like this novel nearly as well as the first in the trilogy. My main problem with this novel is how the author handles the relationship of William and Mary after their marriage. It is historical fact that three to four months after their wedding and after William returned to the army, Mary wrote a friend that while she had thought leaving England was the greatest sorrow that she would know, she now realizes that she never truly knew sorrow until she parted from William. And what made it worse she knew that he could be killed in battle and she would never see him again. It is also historical fact that five months after their wedding she had a miscarriage. There are two more facts about William and Mary's domestic life that I would like to mention. First, they preferred to have supper together and knowing he was involved with affairs of state all day, she would help him relax by talking to him about more trivial matters. Second, they habitually slept together. None of these facts are reflected in the depiction of their relationship in the novel.
