4.0 out of 5 stars Not as fast as they boast
The super octane by Nikko upon first inspection is a super sleek RC that looks like it could fly right out of the package. I was super pumped to try it out. 2.0 out of 5 stars Defender/Super Octane
I recently purchased this r/c car thinking that it would be better than some other ones that are half of the price, I think I was wrong. After charging the battery for 4 hours I played with it for a few minutes before it bumped into a wall, in doing so it knocked something loose in the motor and it began to tick/knock. I then returned it for another one...The vehicle is...

The super octane by Nikko upon first inspection is a super sleek RC that looks like it could fly right out of the package. I was super pumped to try it out. So when I got it home and threw in a battery pack, that I already had charged, to see what it could do I was somewhat disappointed. It wasn't as fast as I thought it would be, but had plenty of power for fun. I called the Nikko company to see what was the fastest RC they made and the Super Octane is it. They boasted a 20 mph rating but I think they come up with this number by calculating wheel rotation and not actual ground speed. With a 100 dollar price tag Nikko should put more powerful motors in there RC's before they start claiming 20 mph speeds. The actual speed is somewhere between 10 and 13 mph with a freshly charged battery that last about 15 to 20 min, but still the Super Octane is fun to play with and did I mention that it looks really cool too. On a scale of 1 to 10 I rate this RC a 7 for speed, a 9 for durability, 5 for climbing prowis, 8 for fun, and a 7 for overall value. If the Super Octane was a bit faster it would have got a higher rating for speed and value.

4.0 out of 5 stars very good off-road car, November 22, 2002

This car is a very good one. It goes around 10 miles per hour and is very durable. You can go over any terrain on this! Ice, dirt, mud, grass, stones, and anything else you can think of! The back end bounces on mine a little when I drive it on the road. That and the fact that it takes 4 hours to charge and it only lasts roughly 25 minutes are the only bad things to it. Also, it needs to be a little higher off the ground because sometimes it will get stuck on things. It is very durable and has lasted a long time and nothing has broken at all! Another improvement that could be made would be four-wheel drive to get out of some situations. I have a lot of fun driving this car and it is quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best fun EVER !!!!!!!, May 14, 2003

I am a 25 yo and have wanted an RC car forever, I finally bought myself this one and couldn't be happier. My buddy bought a NIKKO Chevy Avalanche at the same time and we have been absoltuely punishing these things. After several months they run as well as they did out of the box, and except for a few scratches they are still in great condition. To give you an example of the punishment they will take, we have been driving them down big flights of stairs, jumping 5ft down into an empty swimming pool, offroading in deep mud, and crashing them into each other constantly. Every time we race I think, 'this is too much it'll break this time' but it never does and we just keep beating them up harder and harder.
They are pretty fast but 20 MPH is probably an exaggeration, although their speed is fine for what we want (ie. jumping over stuff 'evel kinevil' style) if you want a super fast car go with a gas powered otherwise these are FANTASTIC! Can't say enough about the durability. Thanks Nikko for a great product. 10/10

this car is great. it might not be as good as the viper gtsr, but its cool because its fast, and it can ride on all terrains. this car can do pretty cool things too. if u push on the gas button and then let go and do it again it sounds and feels like it has manual transmission. ALSO FOR ANY CAR FANATICS THIS IS THE COOL PART! IF YOU PUT DUCK TAPE(CLEAR TAPE, VERY STICKY) ON THE REAR WHEELS, IT ACTS AS SLICK TIRES. THEN IT CAN DRIFT GREAT AND IT CAN EVEN DO SICK DONUTS!EVEN THOUGH IT DOESNT MAKE SMOKE, ITS STILL COOL TO DO IT. if u try and make a track and stuff or try to drift really well then it teaches you basic skills of letting go of the gas or pressing and holding the reverse. this car is very durable and it hasnt broken yet, even though i only had it for 1 year. it can crash into walls, and NO damage, only the body shows scrathes and dents but thats really all. i would get it if u live at a local track, or if u have a nice and big yard, both pavement and offroad(dirt, grass)this is a sick car, and i really recemend it!! good luck! AND WHEN YOU GET IT, IMMEDIATLY TRY AND USE THE TAPE, NICE DONUTS@!!!!!!!!!

this car is very fast. it can go through pretty much any terrain. i am pretty sure that this car has independent wheel shock absorbers for a super-smooth ride. it has a front bumper that can absorb a lot of impacts without breaking. the super octane is sort of educational because it can develop hand-eye coorcination and could also develop some younger kid's motor skills. all in all, this is a great toy for those of you who are holiday shopping for your kids.

Great R/C toy. Faster than most battery powered cars. Tough enough too, been through a couple of crashes and nothing has broken. Quality is considerably better than most R/C cars you will find in the market, tried a couple of other brands first. Such as New Bright and Fast Lane. New Bright lasted for about twenty minutes before drive gear broke. Fast Lane didn't even work out of the box. The only downside to this car is the battery life is too short. Other than that it is a blast to play with.

I bought this car from my friend for [price]. I thought it was a good deal! It sure was!! This car is very good OFF-ROAD!! It has more power than speed. My brother has a Dodge viper GTS. My car is definitely faster than his!! I recommend this car to anyone who is looking for POWER!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Fun to Drive!, September 10, 2003

I recently purchased this same RC model car from Toys R Us, though mine is entitled "Defender" and is less colorful. I've never liked just being able to drive toys like this on the street or in the house, and have always wanted an off road version. This car is exactly what I've been looking for.

The car can pretty much handle any terrain and I've only once had to pick it up out of tall grass that it had become stuck in [due to my bad driving :)]. A trip to a local state park proved no trouble to the car whatsoever, though I have noticed the battery life is shorter when climbing hills and on very rough terrain, but this is to be expected. I have bumped the car into many objects, including a stop sign, telephone pole, parked car, and my brother's RC car. Aside from a few cosmetic scratches, the car hasn't sustained any damage.

My only complaint is the remote control seems to have a very short distance. The car is only able to go about twenty to thirty feet away before it is out of my control, not the hundred or so that nikko claims. But, this could be due to the battery in the controller being old, as I've only used the nine volt that came with the toy.

I highly reccomend purchasing another battery pack, as I find it hard to wait the required four hours for it to charge.

I own all thee octanes that nikko ever made; 4 AA's Octane, 6.0v High Octane, and the best, the 9.6v Super Octane. All are super reliable and sturdy. The Super Octane is the best because of the speed and capability. I am confident that Nikko and Radio Shack make the most durable/best r/c's. Overall a great buy and money well spent.

After charging the battery for 4 hours I played with it for a few minutes before it bumped into a wall, in doing so it knocked something loose in the motor and it began to tick/knock. I then returned it for another one...The vehicle is not nearly as fast as I thought it would be, and it has the largest turning radius of any r/c vehicle I have owned. I will now be returning the r/c car because this is one very overpriced r/c car. I will be doing more research before I purchase another one.
