I am a pretty heavy computer user. I run three small businesses and constantly have my laptop with me and it’s usually on. I was discussing the dangers of EMF exposure with a good friend of mine who happens to be an electrical engineer by trade and who has children that use their laptops and ipads on their laps for hours at a time. Of course being very concerned about frequent EMF exposure, he told them not to put them directly in their laps, but they still did. So he went on the internet to find something to protect his kids, but instead found mostly nonsense products. (buttons, pendants, stickers, USB plugs, pads, sleeves and all this other garbage that doesn’t doing anything to shield radiation emissions) He explained to me that when he spoke with any of these companies, he found little to no evidence that their devices actually work, nor could they substantiate their outrageous claims.

Being technically minded and having some electrical engineering training I am inclined to believe his experiences and we agreed to help one another with this dilemma. Which brings me to the Defenderpad. I happened to find this product while searching for EMF protection products and suggested that my friend give them a call since he knows more about the subject than I. He didn’t mention that he was an electrical engineer, because we wanted to hear exactly what they had do say. What set this company apart was when he spoke with them, they knew exactly what they were talking about and described believable physics.

So we went ahead and bought one and decided to do a little testing together.

I work full time from home on my laptop, and of course I do it comfortably reclined with my laptop on my lap. I need something to protect me from the harmful radiation emitted by the computer. I used my Cell Sensor EMF Detector to measure what was coming off the computer and it topped out the meter, very scary. I ordered the DefenderPad, which came promptly and as advertised. When I checked under the laptop again, with the DefenderPad between the laptop and the meter, there is almost no detected radiation. I only was able to get a small amount of a reading in the area directly under my hard drive, and that completely disappears with the addition of something as simple as a sheet or blanket (pants probably would do it). I think my hard drive probably has higher than normal radiation emissions, it's about time to get a new laptop anyway.

I can tell those of you without a meter, the amount of radiation coming off the top of your laptop is just as bad as that which comes off the underside. So, don't leave your hands resting on your keyboard when you are not actively typing.

The DefenderPad is a good, solid purchase. I highly recommend it. It's very slim and lightweight, so you won't notice it on your lap once you have it set in place with your computer on it. I am so happy that this product is available to protect me in my line of work--without it, I'd have to sit at a desk (barf).

I like the size, shape, and texture of the pad. I was looking for something lightweight and simple. It's a little too big to fit in a 15" laptop sleeve though I can fit in in the inside of my Timbuk2 bag. My biggest complaint is that it doesn't really block the heat. Within a half of an hour the pad get's extremely hot. Generally over priced considering that fact. If it blocked the heat I'd be happy with it.

I just received my DefenderPad and pulled out my Trifield Meter to measure the radiation difference, before and after. I won't mince words, there is some improvement in radiation but it does not meet their advertising claims.

First, let me say, I'm not an EMF engineer, I'm a layperson with a radiation meter I use around the house to keep me out of harms way. That said, here's the results of my personal testing. My laptop sits on one of those breakfast trays made for eating in bed, wood construction. So it is about 2 inches above my legs. That's where I measured from.

Low frequency (0-3) reading before shield - above 5 which is beyond meter reading capability.
after shielding - lowest reading is 4 and bounces to levels beyond meter reading capability
High frequency (0-100) reading before shield - bouncing between 30 to 50
after shielding - bouncing between 3.5 to 6 (a lot lower, but still slightly in the danger zone)
Thermal issues weren't measured, as it is not an issue for me.

So there is some improvement, but it doesn't bring the radiation down into the 'safe' range either. I have no knowledge of how their less than stellar performance and claims compares with competing products. Not sure I want to go down that rabbit hole. Bottom line, some improvement, but don't believe that you're not getting significant radiation doses when you're using your laptop. I'll decided if I'm keeping it after researching what else is out there. I rated it a 2 star because of their marketing claims versus actual performance.
