A charming historical pageant starring real people,
By A Customer
This review is from: Defending Hillsborough (Paperback)
The author lovingly recreates the early part of her ancestress' history and the history of the Inn that still welcomes visitors to Hillsborough. The story unfolds with the stately predictability of a family tradition. You don't read this one for the plot, you read it for the warm familiarity of ante-bellum Southern life and the changes imposed by "the late unpleasantness."

Truely a step back in time,

This review is from: Defending Hillsborough (Paperback)
This is one of the best books I have ever read. I found it very hard to put down, and the story telling was amazing. It was also a turn on to me since I am from Hillsborough. I absolutely loved reading this book and then be able to go into town and see exactly where things were. Truely a step back in time for me.

It's the kind of book one finds hard to put down. One can feel Sarah's pain and fustrations but at the same time marval at her strength. One has the feeling of actually being at the inn with her, waiting for the next thing to happen , wondering what you would do in her place.

I began reading my copy of "Defending Hillsborough" the evening that I received it, and just could not put it down. I finished it at 5 A.M. the following morning, wanting more which I anxiously await in the sequel, "Reconstructing Hillsborough." Clarissa Thomasson has a 'feel' for bringing history to life.

"Defending Hillsborough" is most enjoyable. The characters seemed so real that I felt among them, living the story. The wonderful surprise ending makes a perfect beginning for the sequel, "Reconstructing Hillsborough."

This was a beautifully written book. I enjoyed every minute of it. Could not put it down. I wanted to know what was going to happen next to Sarah. Thanks for providing me with such a wonderful book to read. The facts about the Civil War and the historical events leading up to this war were done so well. I look so forward to reading the next book. Will Cave finally have the woman that he always loved. Will Lucy and Tom still be there for Sarah. What will become of the Inn. Do not miss this one!!!!!!!!

Excellent descriptions of the Civil War era in North Carolina. Ms. Thomasson has vividly captured this historical event and the love of family in this heartwarming novel. The character of CAVE was my favorite, and I trust that the author will continue to weave his story throughout the sequel. I wil be anxious to read it.

This was the type of book you don't want to put down because you have to see what happens next! I got very involved with the characters - the descriptions were so vivid! I felt I knew each character personally. I will definitely look forward to more books by Ms. Thomasson.

This is a tapestry of fine story telling.,
By Ann Brandt, author of "Crowfoot Ridge" (Hendersonville, North Carolina USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Defending Hillsborough (Paperback)
Challenged by forces beyond her control, Sarah Stroud shows her determination, intelligence, and extraordinary skills of survival in "Defending Hillsborough." Thomasson brings to life the story of her great-great-grandmother's struggle to save the historic family-owned Orange Hotel in Hillsborough, North Carolina from imminent destruction during the Civil War. The author weaves her well-researched history, her spirited characters, and the grace of southern plantation life into a tapestry of fine story telling. Ann Brandt, author of "Crowfoot Ridge"
