Reviewed by Alice D. for Readers Favorite

"Defending a King: His Life & Legacy" will leave the reader in a different place at its ending. Even readers who are indifferent to Michael Jackson will be true fans at the end of this book. Author Karen Moriarty takes the reader step by step into Michael Jackson's life and career, convincingly conveying his great musical genius and his inability to deal with the sycophants and cheats who attached themselves to him. As the "King of Pop", his ability to write brilliant songs and dance to their beat could not be matched by anyone else in the music business. But this great talent also made Michael Jackson inept in business dealings. Dr. Moriarty tells of how people who worked for Michael Jackson stole from him right and left. Dr. Moriarty also tells honestly of how Michael never recovered from the horrors of the Neverland 2005 trial and covers his tragic death at the hands of Conrad Murray. Michael was overwhelmed by the lawsuits that came at him incessantly and only wished to have a good night's sleep. Instead, filled with a deadly drug, he died. It becomes clear to the reader that Michael Jackson was a first rate father to his three children, but despite being surrounded by people, he was a lonely, lonely man. Dr. Moriarty speculates that Michael Jackson might have lived if he'd had someone nearby who truly cared about him. She tells that, of his immediate family, he was close only to his mother. Sad!

"Defending a King" is one of those rare books that will touch the reader's mind and heart. It deserves a wide readership for it is well-written and tells of a Michael Jackson who gave thousands to charity work around the world, who would sit with gravely ill children
to comfort them, who was loved by leaders like Nelson Mandella for the good deeds Michael felt he was on this earth to accomplish. Too bad that most people think of Michael Jackson as a bizarre person, associating him and his estate Neverland with perversion. Gifted, good and otherworldly? Yes, Michael Jackson most definitely was.

WHY DID YOU WRITE THIS BOOK, DR. KAREN MORIARTY?

                                                               "His kindness and humility."
These are the words that most people used to answer my question,
"What did you most admire about Michael Jackson?"

It is because of Michael Jackson's goodness - mostly unknown and ignored during his lifetime - that I have been inspired to undertake this project. "A mission" is the best way to describe it. I never experienced a moment of "writer's block" as I was working on this book. Not ever.

The "SECRETS" about Michael Jackson that I discovered were neither sinister nor ugly. Michael chose love, as corny as that sounds. He chose to be a global humanitarian. Michael believed that was his purpose on this Earth -- to "heal the world."

IN THE AUTHOR'S WORDS . . .

I always believed in Michael Jackson's innocence. To me, his jury trial in 2005 for alleged crimes against children, including kidnapping and molestation, was a misguided, ill-intentioned travesty of justice. I rejoiced when Michael was found not guilty of all 14 counts of felonies and misdemeanors.

When Michael Jackson died suddenly on June 25, 2009, I was stunned, numbed, and deeply saddened. That fateful and pivotal day began what turned into full-time research about Michael; visits to his homes, including Neverland; writing as a volunteer for a secret MJ advocacy group; interviewing many people who knew him; and networking with his fans from everywhere.

In early 2010, I watched a television program that featured Michael's team of three bodyguards, men who protected him and his children while he was based in Las Vegas from late 2006 to mid-2008. These men announced that they wanted to write a book about Michael Jackson from their "inside" experiences and perspective. They felt like his champions and were determined to dispel the media-created nonsense about their beloved boss.

Weeks later, after searching unsuccessfully for their book, I contacted the head of security on that team and volunteered my services to help. I believed that it was important that finally there would be a caring and credible book about Michael Jackson. After four days of meetings with two of the bodyguards in Las Vegas and several months of full-time ghostwriting for them, I realized that we were "not on the same page" on some major issues. We had "a parting of the ways," which I describe fully in "The Back Door" chapter. With my husband Robert's encouragement, I changed direction, expanded the scope, and wrote the "definitive book" about Michael Jackson that I had hoped would be available ... but never was.

During my author's journey, I met with and interviewed many people who knew and loved Michael. They were generous both in spirit and in the information that they shared with me. Everyone knew that we were working together on a project to advance Michael's legacy.

I made no attempt to work with a conventional publishing company because many "knowers" assured me that the American publishing industry was not interested in a positive book about Michael Jackson. It was trash that sold - sensationalism, rumor, innuendo, allegations, and sordid stories. I self-published Defending A King ~ His Life & Legacy in December 2011.

Michael Jackson fans responded in great numbers. People from around the globe have embraced this book in heartwarming ways.

Defending A King ~ His Life & Legacy was updated during the early months of 2012, incorporating excellent suggestions from fans and other readers. I self-published the second edition with Outskirts Press in August 2012. This edition is now available anywhere in the world. The book became an Amazon Kindle bestseller at the end of that year. I'm so grateful: "It's all for L.O.V.E."

UNANTICIPATED BENEFITS - SPECIAL FRIENDS

From Michael's two bodyguards, I gained a real feel of Michael Jackson as a private person, father, boss, businessman, friend, and family member. These men knew the greatest entertainer in the world as "surprisingly normal," kind, gentle, vulnerable, and plagued by extraordinary troubles. They were surprised and amazed by their journey as his protectors and occasionally as his confidantes. They loved "the boss" and his "three little ones" -- Prince, Paris, and Blanket.

When we went our separate ways, we were not friends ... but we were not enemies either. These men never did publish a book about their beloved boss. Perhaps someday they will.

After that fascinating "immersion" experience, I have been blessed to make friends with many wonderful people of unquestionable integrity, all of whom are advocates of Michael and his legacy. I feel that we are kindred spirits. They have generously shared with me their stories, intimacies, feelings, and experiences with Michael Jackson. I feel humbled and honored to call them my friends.

The "Dedication" of the book says it all:

                                                        "To Robert, my in-house inspiration,
                                                                                     &
To Michael Jackson, who changed my life."

One of the biggest surprises for me has been the discovery of the multitude of individuals whose lives have been changed by Michael Jackson. I've included as many stories from these people as possible in this book.

     I'm especially grateful to....
  • Thomas Mesereau and Susan Yu, MJ's defense attorneys in 2004-05;
  • David Nordahl, MJ's personal artist and mentor for 20-plus years;
  • Larry Nimmer, MJ's advocate and the filmmaker of the only video of Neverland, Michael's home and sanctuary for 17 years;
  • Cherilyn Lee, MJ's personal nurse in 2009 and key witness in the Conrad Murray manslaughter trial.
There are many others whom I would like to include here, but space does not permit....

SPECIAL GOALS

As a former teacher of English and writing, I incorporated specific goals in Defending A King ~ His Life & Legacy:
  • This book contains no salacious material; its content is appropriate for teenagers as well as adults of all ages.
  • The reader does not need to read it from beginning to end because there are 19 discreet chapters, each with its own theme.
  • This biography can be comfortably incorporated into the curriculum at the high school, college, and graduate school levels.
While I was writing Defending A King ~ His Life & Legacy, I was ever-conscious of Michael's beloved children - Prince, Paris, and Blanket. I wanted this book to be a worthy tribute to their father.

LAST WORDS: I encourage readers to write reviews of Defending A King ~ His Life & Legacy. Also, I welcome direct communications from readers. I attempt to answer every message.

Defending a King~His Life & Legacy is offered as an intimate and disclosing portrayal of Michael Jackson, with new information and unique insights regarding this "king of a man." His goodness has been unknown and/or ignored; this volume needs to be affixed to the legacy of his greatness. "Bizarre behavior is normal in bizarre circumstances." Dr. Moriarty leads her reader through the maze of stunningly bizarre circumstances in which Michael lived and struggled, through his private joys and sufferings as a real human being... a transcendent man.

Baby Richard: A Four-Year-Old Comes Home, published in 2003, was her first book, written because it was "an epic story that had to be told."

Karen is married to Dr. Robert V. Moriarty, also a licensed clinical psychologist and former president of a community college and of a private graduate school.

They reside with their feline companions, Stephanie Ann and Tom Riley, in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida.

I had high hopes for Dr. Moriarty's book "Defending A King", based on reviews from different MJ fan sites and blogs, an endorsement from Tom Mesereau, and hearing her interview on Blog Talk Radio to promote the book. However, after finally completing this massive 500 page book, I am left with a feeling of immense incompleteness, as there is much to be desired from this well-intentioned but poorly research book. Let me explain:

The book started out great, with Dr. Moriarty speaking about her conversations with MJ's bodyguards from Vegas. There is a lot of great information that they gave, and it's a shame that they had a falling out with Dr. Moriarty and did not complete the book with her, as was the original intention. The knowledge that she received from MJ's attorney Tom Mesereau was valuable as well, as Dr. Moriarty gives fans an inside look at what is was like for MJ to experience that tortuous trial.

Unfortunately, the book falls apart quickly because Dr. Moriarty obviously isn't very knowledgeable about MJ, and she is a very poor researcher. Here are a few examples:

On page 226, she inadvertently regurgitates a March 2008 tabloid story written by Stacy Brown, who co-authored the 2004 piece of trash book "Man Behind The Mask" with MJ's former manager Bob Jones. The article, titled "Jacko Clan In A Deep Funk", was originally printed in the New York Post, and it purports to be an honest portrayal of the whereabouts and happenings of the Jackson family in 2008. It was reprinted in the "Michael Jackson Tribute - Exclusive Collector's Edition" book, and this is where Dr. Moriarty copied it almost word for word! The article states that Marlon Jackson was stocking shelves at a supermarket in San Diego, Tito was having to settle for small gigs that paid him several hundred dollars a show, and Randy was doing odd jobs like changing car tires to support himself! For Dr. Moriarty to reprint this garbage is utterly UNCONSCIONABLE! Dr. Moriarty should have tried to verify this information directly from the family so that they could have a chance confirm or deny the story (which they definitely would have denied!), and if she could not do so, then she should not have included this information! Period! If she was even remotely knowledgeable about MJ and the Jackson family, she would have INSTANTLY had recognized this as tabloid garbage! But because it was reprinted in an MJ book, she believed it hook, line, and sinker!

In her chapter "Michael Jackson's TSUNAMI: The Trial", which is a rather incomplete summary of the 2005 trial, Dr. Moriarty doesn't mention AT ALL the testimonies of Blanca and Jason Francia! They were the prosecution's witnesses who testified as "Prior Bad Acts" witnesses. Blanca was a former Neverland employee who sold a story saying that she saw MJ showering with young boys to Hard Copy for $20k dollars, and her son Jason was pressured by police to say that he had been improperly touched by MJ while playing tickling games. Blanca threatened to file a lawsuit against MJ in late 1994, and MJ reached a settlement of $2.4 million dollars with her to prevent her from filing the lawsuit and further sullying his image, especially with the HIStory album due to be released soon. Jason's testimony was so terrible that some of the jurors actually laughed at him during a court break! Blanca's testimony was obviously unconvincing, as the jury acquitted MJ of all charges, but NONE of their testimony was talked about in this chapter! Dr. Moriarty also did NOT explain how Blanca was able to legally extort the $2.4 million from MJ! (As I just did.) This is a COLOSSAL omission of important evidence that CANNOT be overlooked! Dr. Moriarty also left out a lot of the important aspects of the testimony of the Arvizo family, such as Gavin's lie that MJ told him that he should masturbate or else he'd have to rape a woman (Gavin initially told police that his Grandmother said that). There are so many other lies that she left out, and it makes you wonder did she even bother to read all of their testimony?

I also would have liked to have seen her show how Tom Sneddon completely rearranged the charges and alleged dates of the molestatioins in between the filing of the Initial Complaint in December 2003, and the Grand Jury Indictment in April 2004. If only she had been as detailed about the 2005 trial as she was about the Conrad Murray trial later on in the book!

There were numerous small errors that, in their totality, add up validate how sloppily this book is researched. For example, on numerous occasions throughout the book, Dr. Moriarty refers to MJ's 1993 settlement as "approximately $20 million dollars", when in fact it was $15,331,250 dollars! The settlement documents leaked in 2004, and if Dr. Moriarty had properly researched the settlement, instead of relying solely on inaccurate media reports, she would have known that!

On page 86, Dr. Moriarty incorrectly asserts that actor Marlon Brando had a cameo appearance in "Smooth Criminal", when in fact he appeared in "You Rock My World"! If you think that's not a big deal, then I guess it also would have been OK if she had said that Ola Ray starred in "In The Closet", and Naomi Campbell starred in "Thriller"!!

On a several occasions, Dr. Moriarty cites very questionable sources for her facts. For example, she cites Wikipedia, Topix, Radar Online, and TMZ! Once again, anyone even remotely familiar with research skills should know that you should NEVER cite Wikipedia, TMZ, or any other such tabloid sources! How can anyone take you seriously!

And she also cites several MJ fansites and blogs, such as michaeljacksonhoaxforum.com (page 228), mjj2005.com (page 267), and mjfanclub.net (numerous pages). It's very unprofessional for an author to cite fan sites and blogs of the celebrity that they are researching, even if the information is true. Instead of citing the actual site or blog, she should have cited the SOURCE DOCUMENTS that she was researching, such as the AEG contract and court transcripts!

Now, let me get into all of the information that is MISSING from this book! When you're truly knowledgeable about a subject, you can evaluate the quality of a book by looking for pertinent information that should be included but isn't!

Dr. Moriarty did NOT give a complete timeline and summary of the 1993 scandal, which you would think that "the definitive" book on MJ would include! She didn't mention how Jordan didn't admit to any wrongdoing by MJ until after he was cajoled by Evan after a dental procedure was performed on him, or that Evan didn't go to the police with his allegations, but instead took Jordan to see a psychiatrist so that the psychiatrist could report Jordan's claims, or how Evan hired then fired Gloria Allred after she refused to sue MJ instead of prosecuting him first, or how he sued Sony in 1996 for the right to record a "rebuttal album" to MJ's HIStory called "EVANstory", or how Evan was the ghostwriter for the book "All That Glitters", which was released by his brother Ray in September 2004!

Dr. Moriarty briefly mentioned the FBI's files on MJ, which were released in December 2009, but she did NOT mention how Jordan Chandler met with Ron Zonen on September 2004 and threatened legal action against Zonen if he was subpoenaed to testify against MJ, and how Jordan told him that he had "done his part"! That is one of the most significant pieces of exculpatory evidence that fans have against the Chandlers, yet it's completely missing from the book!

On page 487, Dr. Moriarty criticizes J. Randy Taraborrelli's "hastily written" 2009 rerelease of his book "The Magic, The Madness, The Whole Story", yet she quoted from this book MULTIPLE times throughout her book! Why is that? Why would she cite a source multiple times and then criticize that same source?

There were other mistakes that I found, but this review is long enough as it is, and you get the point. I give Dr. Moriarty an 5 stars for effort, but a 2 stars for execution! These errors just cannot be swept under the rug, no matter how well intentioned the book is! It would be like me saying that VH1's 2004 movie "Man in the Mirror" is a good movie because VH1's heart was in the right place! The notion that this book should be assigned to college students who wish to learn about MJ is a joke, because it is poorly researched, devolves into a love letter at times, includes too much "copying and pasting" from MJ blogs and other books, leaves much to be desired.

Don't get me wrong, there are a lot of positive things to say about this book, and overall I would recommend it to new fans, but for knowledgeable fans such as myself, the book is severely flawed. I know that it may seem that I came down very hard on this book, but it's out of my dedication to MJ that the truth be told about him in an ACCURATE and PROFESSIONAL manner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Setting the record straight March 30, 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Though I have 2 chapters to go, I feel safe in saying Buy This Book!

For those just learning about Michael, this book gives a comprehensive look at his life - his career, philanthropy, legal and financial issues (and their causes), fatherhood, and unequaled necessary security measures. There is more information here about Michael's last four years than in anything else I've read, mainly due to anecdotes shared by the men who were Michael's Las Vegas bodyguards.

Dr. Moriarty writes with genuine respect and understanding for Michael, but she does not paint him as the meek, mild, one dimensional character some fans embrace. She gives real insight to the way this intelligent, sensitive, often funny man dealt with the pressures of his life. While she touches on health issues and his sexuality it is with respect, with the intent of setting the record straight.

To the informed fan I say this: it is time we put our money where our mouths are. Too many MJ fans think they already know it all, so don't need to read another book. For others, it's time to stop the misguided "protection" of Michael's privacy by silencing, via boycotts, anyone who actually knew, loved and understood him, or has interviewed those who did. Tom Messerau not only endorses this book, he was interviewed for it, and no one can doubt his motives.

How do' we get the general public interested in the truth about Michael? We have to fight this battle on the existing field, and that means hit 'em in the bottom line. Sales = media interest' = curiosity in the general public. If truth sells, publishers and producers will stop brainwashing the masses with their toxic swill. It really is all about $$$. We need to get these books on best sellers lists, so in years to come people will have something thoughtful and honest to read about The King of Pop, and the man named Michael Jackson. If these people don't speak, if they are not supported, there will be nothing but rumor, conjecture and lies for future generations who want to learn.

5.0 out of 5 stars A book for all ages February 11, 2012
Format:Paperback
As a senior citizen my idea of the King of Pop was Sinatra. My perception of Michael Jackson was built on media critics, video clips, and news of lawsuits. Dr. Karen Moriarty's biography has provided an amazing narrative of this remarkable entertainer and human being. Her detailed description of his life has totally changed the stereotype of a globally famous celebrity. A great read.
