Editorial Reviews

Review

"Whether you are experienced in magick or are just interested in the practices and foundation of it, this book will lead you through many different subjects ranging from cleansing oneself to the ridding of negative influences and supernatural beings. Wonderfully written and well organized, Ms. Carlin takes a step further by delving into the backgrounds and folklore of many different subjects. A creative piece regardless of ones' belief systems, this book allows one to rethink beyond one's normal cognition."
--Allison Knoedler, parapsychologist and owner/operator of Morris County Paranormal Research Society, NJ

If you are looking for a book that can impart magickal knowledge that can be done by both beginners or experienced practitioners in real-life situations, this is it! Emily Carlin has created a reference that benefits anyone who practices magick and which will keep on being useful long after the first reading. Whether you are looking to learn more about magickal beings or develop practical skills to deal with them, this book will work for you.

I was lucky enough to attend a convention and take a workshop with Ms. Carlin ahead of DEFENSE AGAINST THE DARK's official release which allowed me to see her present some of information in person as well as get a copy of the book. Her knowledge is drawn from life experiences and research, and her methods are refined not only from a broad range of study but from many years of actual application. One of the most important things Ms. Carlin emphasized in her presentation (and which is also in the book) is the fact that most of the time malevolent encounters with magickal beings are rare and that most troublesome situations can be avoided. For those rare instances when something "bad" does happen, she offers straightforward means for dealing with them.

While the encyclopedia section of creatures and entities is informative and well-indexed for reference use, I think the real benefits come from the practical section that follows. Included are exercises to develop awareness, techniques for learning to develop and use your own energies better, and guidelines for quick and effective ways to handle any unpleasant situations that may arise. This is a foundational text that deserves a place in every magickal library!

This is the seminal book on Defense Against Dark Arts, suitable from beginners to advanced practitioners. It covers basic techniques to advanced techniques, all kinds of negative energies and entities that we might encounter, with the remedies to thwart them. My highest recommendation.

This book is a field guide. It's practical defensive magick for people who need it, written by an author who knows her subject very well. Rating the creatures of the night gives an idea of what you are up against, and if you are able to do something about it yourself, or should run to someone who's more experienced. It does not give lengthy descriptions of lore and myth, just plain solutions for definite problems. For *real* practitioners of magick.

Ms. Carlin knows her stuff. How do I know that? Because she tells the reader right up front that most of the stuff people think are "hauntings" aren't that at all. She isn't here to convince people that every mysterious thing is supernatural. But, once you figure out if the thing is really a problem, her book is here to help you sort it.

Not so much a "how to" but an encyclopedia of the things that go bump and helpful rating on how dangerous they are and how you might make contact or if you SHOULD make contact or just turn and get the heck out.

If you have an issue, read up on it, see if it really is an "issue" or something else and then see how to procede. This book will help you get there safely.

The book treats one of those problems that no one ever considers until they have it. What to do when confronted by something supernatural and hostile? The author addresses this question with her encyclopedic knowledge of the subject, and provides Wiccan/pagan solutions to the problem.

Some of her solutions are quite innovative and I had not read their like before. Her solution to the problem presented by an infernal that simply will not leave was quite surprising. I recommend this book as something that should simply be in the library of any magickal practioner, just in case.

Congratulations to Emily Carlin, who has given the magickal bookshelf something it has long been missing: a carefully crafted, experience-based work combining core protective and energy magicks (grounding, centering, shielding, cleansing, banishing, spellwork, and more) with a "field guide" approach to the very beasties and beings one might want to protect against.

Carlin brings years of practical knowledge into the work, using her own experience, a rich cultural tradition of magick, and a lawyer's academic research skills. The result is a book that's deeply informative and great fun to read. She makes the subject approachable from a number of directions; whether one is an experienced magickal practitioner, a newbie interested in basic protective skills, or simply someone who wants to curl up with a cup of tea and learn more about the so-called creatures of the night, there's easy entry into the work. And it's a wonderfully entertaining read, written in a clever yet absolutely authoritative voice and teeming with tongue-in-cheek humor and common sense. Carlin reminds the reader that much malevolent magick can be avoided with a bit of common sense: i.e., sometimes a creaky door is just a creaky door. But should one run into a ghost, goblin, or something even more harrowing, Carlin is ready to help you deal.

Add this innovative work to your library-- it will fill a unique niche in your life of magickal study, research, and practice.
