4.0 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS VERY HELPFUL TO BOTH CHRISTIANS AND SKEPTICS...
Forget about reviewers who have an obvious bias against Dave Hunt. This book is really excellent for answering many questions that sometimes arise about difficult Bible questions, supposed contradictions, and the honest questions of various skeptics and unbelievers.

3.0 out of 5 stars I'm a Dave Hunt fan, but he values mainstream theories rather than new covenant theology in this one
Yes, I'm a avid reader of Dave Hunt's works. Yes, he can be over the top, especially with his eschatology and very rough treatment of those he doesn't agree with. Having said that, this book handles many issues well, including translational issues, cults, the faith-prosperity movement, and assurance of salvation.

I'm not dogmatic about eschatology, or the...

Forget about reviewers who have an obvious bias against Dave Hunt. This book is really excellent for answering many questions that sometimes arise about difficult Bible questions, supposed contradictions, and the honest questions of various skeptics and unbelievers.

Dave Hunt is a life-long student of the Bible and a very devout Christian man. Many Christians and nonchristians will find this book challenging and forthright. I recommend it as a good overview of Christian apologetics for the general public. I think you will find it answers a LOT of important questions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent book well written and with well thoughtout answers, November 25, 1999
This review is from: In Defense of the Faith (Paperback)
This book is excellent for answering some questions which often get raised especially by non christians about supposed discrepancies in the christian faith.

This is an excellent book to give to the inteligent well educated unbeliever with a christian background who doubts the authenticity of the bible or who believes there are descrepancies in the bible that cant be reconcilled.

This book is also very usefull for envangelism to prepare oneself for common questions unbelievers ask or common objections or mistruths unbelievers raise.

I feel my time was well spent reading this book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Pagans Take Note of the Truth!, January 18, 2006
This review is from: In Defense of the Faith (Paperback)
This is "another" great read and witnessing tool for Born-Again Believers! Once again Dave "lays" it on the line right straight from the Bible. Catholics, Mormons, Jehovah Witnesses, etc. will continue to "hide" their collective heads in the "sand" and trash this well-researched work! NO "excuses" will be "entertained" when we stand before God in judgement! Believers of "man-made" doctrines BEWARE!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good source for study; an in-depth Q&A, October 15, 2006
This review is from: In Defense of the Faith (Paperback)
Sometimes, it's good just to buy a theological book from an author from the discernment genre for five bucks and then keep it in your car for work breaks, which is what I do with this. There is tons of information, and yes, not all his views are perfect, or even necessarily those I agree with.

Hunts schtick is very predictable; typical conservative church doctrine with sharp barbs aimed at the teachings of Catholocism (and pointing out errors of even Martin Luther who to some extent maintain certain heresies) and the Worth-Faith movement -- as is totally necessary in an age when people pray to persons other than Jesus Christ or worship the creation rather than the creator.

Dave Hunt, in the end, truly preaches the grace of Christ alone as the only way to the father. Here are some quotes...

"... but if salvation is through faith in Christ alone, then to add baptism as a conndition for salvation is to reject the true gospel..." from page 309.

"Such knowledge of God and assurance of one's salvation goes beyond intellectual understanding and therefore cannot be shaken by intellectual arguements..."

Indeed, Hunt covers questions in all areas. For example, Chapter 3; Is the Bible reliable? will start with a subheading: Do the Dead Sea Scrolls reflect badly on the bible? and then there will be a question about a paragraph long, a response from Hunt just as long, and then usually a page worth of background concerning the issue.

To be honest, I'm still reading different parts, and also revisiting others. Indeed, a lot of info.

Here's Hunt responds to the faith movement heresy that Jesus accomplished our salvation by being tortured by Satan in hell after the cross. "Satan isn't the proprietor of hell. He hasn't even been there yet. Nor will Satan torture the damned, but he himself will be tormented with "everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels" (Matthew 25:41).... Before He died Jesus cried in triumph, "It is finished!" (John 19:30), indicating that our redemption ahd been accomplished on the cross."...page 306.

Though, I disagree with Hunt's response to the following question:

Question: I was always taught from Isaiah 14 that Satan was a fallen angel originally named Lucifer. Recently I've learned that this isn't so, for the one being spoken of in Isaiah 14 is obviously "the king of Babylon" (verse 4). Then was Satan created by God as he is now, the most evil of creatures?

Hunt responds on page 218 that Satan was a fallen cherab and the chief cherub, and that the description of the King of Babylon also applies to all the characteristics of Satan.

First of all, it is a fact that the Bible itself never says "Satan was once a Cherub who chose to fall away from God." Secondly, Christ himself in the gospels doesn't refer to Satan as a fallen angel who once served God but rather says that Satan was a deciever from the beginning, never indicating this supposed transformation that we are supposed to ascertain through the bible. Thirdly, it says of the king of Babylon in that text that we'll all look to this figure and say belittingly "This is the one who decieved the nations?". Rather, Jude tells us that even Michael the archangel did not dare accuse the devil but said "God rebuke thee." I agree with Hunt critics when they say that he can be overly confident in his views on which scripture is silent. "Lucifer" isn't even a name of Satan in early texts; it is a derivitive from the Latin term meaning "light bearer" describing the King of Babylon. In my humble opinion, Hunt still holds onto "Daunte's Inferno" theology which doesn't seem to jibe with specific new testament scriptures on the issue.

Though it seems like a little thing, heresies by modern-day "preacher/authors" like Jesse Duplantis and Mary Baxter are the seed for their made up revelations,... yet few question it because of their traditional worldly view of the topic of Satan and his fallen angels.

The important thing, as always, is to pray and study on our own for God and his truths to be revealed, and I think this book by Dave Hunt does help us to accomplish that goal.

I don't always agree with Dave Hunt, but despite that I gave this book 5 stars. Dave lays out excellent answers and arguments in defense of the Faith. All Christians would do well to get a copy of this book and read it a few times a year. It really gives you a little extra mortar to add to your theological foundation, which is of course built upon the Rock (Christ).
