Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

If the US emerged from the Cold War as the only remaining superpower state, then Defense & Foreign Affairs Handbook (started in 1976) emerged as the only remaining superpower in strategic global intelligence. The Handbook's 1999 edition, with chapters on 238 countries and territories, is the first since 1996, and as a result is massively changed over the previous edition, and some 250 pages thicker. Each country chapter lists the leadership and cabinet, followed by a detailed history, recent developments, general demographics, political data (including elections, election results, political parties, judicary, etc.), economic and infrastructural demographics, media and communications, followed by a defense overview, the defense structure of the state, defense budgets, manpower, treaties, chemicals and biological weapons capabilities, defense leadership and addresses, and then the battle order of all armed services, with equipment and deployment. This is then followed by! sections listing major embassies, the intelligence services, and finally any insurgency groups. This was the pattern in previous years, too, but this year the maps have mostly been upgraded, the national flag is shown, and there is more detail (evidenced by the increase in pages). There is also a valuable new chapter which explains, particularly for non-defense analysts, the origin and relative status of various military units. There is a good Who's Who in Defense & Foreign Affairs, an improved atlas, and several other important chapters. US President Ronald Reagan's National Security Advisor said that Defense & Foreign Affairs Handbook was "indispensible to the running of National Security Council". Well, it's even better now.
