5.0 out of 5 stars Shotgun Training
Excellent work covering the basics of police & home-defense shotgun. Any book by Awerbuck is certain to be excellent, both entertaining and informative. He has lots of experience, and is a very logical thinker. If you're a police officer, a new 3-gun competitor, or just want to be ready to defend your family, this is a great book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Brief Overview of The Defensive Shotgun
Well written but overly brief overview of the defensive shotgun with ample photographs and diagrams to explain the concepts being discussed.

Awerbuck tried to cover too much territory with too little material. The table of contents shows 19 items and only 77 pages. Once you add in the photographs and blank spaces, it leaves about 2 pages per topic. That's...

Awerbuck tried to cover too much territory with too little material. The table of contents shows 19 items and only 77 pages. Once you add in the photographs and blank spaces, it leaves about 2 pages per topic. That's barely enough to gloss over the subject.

This is a good book. When you consider the price, there are better ones available.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Primer on the Tactical Shotgun by a Shooting Master, September 2, 2010

This is one of the first treatments of the defensive shotgun as a topic, rather than modifying a sporting shotgun. Louis Awerbuck always puts emphasis on the basics. This is no different. Since publication, there have been many defensive shotguns produced, several following this superb instructor's sage advice and experience. He has also updated the topic, sort of, with a video. His basic observation and comments may be updated by technological advance, but his wisdom and knowledge is as sound today as published in 1989 when it was "visionary."

The main importance here is Awerbuck's knowledge and advice upon which to judge the ever-changing world of technological progress and entrpreneurial invention and a foundation upon which to learn the subject matter.

I don't want this to come across as an insult to the author, but this (magazine) just wasn't what I thought it would be. It's just somewhat vague and not too detailed. If you had never owned or even shot a shotgun and you just wanted to learn a little bit about what a shotgun is and what it is used for, then it would be okay for someone like that. I am sure that Mr. Awerbuck is an incredible instructor and if he has some more advanced books, then I would take a chance on buying one of those. This book is kind of like a kindergarten class on the subject and its size is pretty small. Not a lot of instruction. Nothing that I didn't really already know. If you have never shot a shotgun and you've never owned a gun and just wanted some real basic introduction, then this might just be the magazine to answer some of those introductory questions.

3.0 out of 5 stars My Mistake, March 13, 2010

"Defensive Shotgun, the Techniques and Tactics" was somewhat disappointing for me. I expected an introductory discussion of the author's recommendation for a defensive shotgun before getting into the mechanics of how to maneuver the shotgun in the most advantageous way during a robbery, etc. The book was clearly titled "Techniques and Tactics" so it was my oversight in selecting the book in the first place. My interest was gauge size, shot, side by side, over/under, etc.
