The game combines the intense action of a console third-person shooter, with the persistence, scale, and customization, while its TV counterpart exudes the scope, story, and drama of a classic sci-fi epic.

“Arktech – many folks die for it. Everyone kills for it.”
Unite with countless players for nonstop, pulse-pounding combat in Defiance, the third-person online open-world shooter coming to Xbox 360, PlayStation3, and PC. Wield the firepower of the future against alien horrors, ruthless thugs, and your fellow Ark Hunters. Join the transmedia revolution as your victories in a rich, seamless persistent world impact the tense serial drama coming to Syfy!

Key Features:

  • Vehicles - Terrestrial Motorworks has fused human and Votan technology into the Hannibal 800TR Quad. This four-wheel-drive, all-terrain powerhouse combines a hybrid engine that runs off petrohol and raw gulanite with a reinforced vysidium alloy frame to handle heavy loads and massive hits. There is no smoother ride across the new frontier than the rough-and-ready Hannibal 800TR.
  • Enemies - Hellbugs are a nightmarish by-product of Votan terramorphing technology. These insectoid killing machines bore up from hives deep underground to gather food for their Matriarch, overwhelming their victims in a barrage of chittering teeth and blood-red carapace. As awful as they are, Hellbug waste can be processed into petrohol, the only renewable fuel source on the frontier.
  • Locales - The Arkfall has infused idyllic Marin County with gulanite, an otherworldly mineral that powers Votan technology. Now, driven by lust for the precious crystals, cyborg “Miner 99ers” have turned the bustling mining territory of Marin into a war-torn hell. Even the boldest Ark Hunters must overcome the dread that haunts this area as they confront its vicious denizens.
  • Activities - The Votans came to Earth in titanic vessels called Arks. But an unexplained series of explosions broke the ships apart, surrounding the planet in a belt of orbiting debris. Now, without warning, chunks of the wreckage crash down to earth in cataclysmic “Arkfall events.”
Arkfalls are dynamic, scaling, multi-stage challenges drawing Ark Hunters, thugs, and hungry Hellbugs into frenzied battles for rare resources and alien technology. Those who brave an Arkfall might reap vast riches … or perish in a storm of gunfire and screeching monsters.

4.0 out of 5 stars A New Age of MMO(for better or worse) April 12, 2013
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3|Edition:Standard
Fun: 4.0 out of 5 stars
Defiance came as a surprise to me. I must say first of all that this was my first MMO (Massively Multi-player Online Game). Before this I had only dabbled for a few minutes at a time in any MMO that I tried. None kept my attention whatsoever and at first, Defiance looked to be no different. I had actually downloaded the Beta(A test run for a game) but was severely underwhelmed at the first couple of hours I spent playing. I really only came back to it out of having to kill some time. The beta was pretty bad with glitches and bugs at every turn (that is why they run a beta though after all) and I teetered on the fence of whether or not I wanted to make the full purchase when the game came out. After spending a few more hours in the world of Defiance, I decided I'd give it a shot. I finally ended up downloading it from PSN because I had some points I needed to use up anyway.

Now as to the game itself, at present there are still numerous glitches but I haven't had any that were game breaking or more than an annoyance. First, if you are a passerby that has just taken interest in this game without knowing anything about it, know that it is an MMO. And as such you have to be connected to PSN via the internet to actually play the game. You will be playing with other people, though your interaction with them is up to you. This game is mostly player verses the environment(PvE). In other words, you'll be fighting computer controlled bad guys and you can team up with other players on the fly to tackle these baddies. There is no player verses player in the main game other than optional 'Shadow Wars'. PvP comes in the form of competitive multi-player maps that have you facing off against other human opponents.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Good & The Bad April 6, 2013
By Todd P
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3|Edition:Standard
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
The strangest thing about this game was how little information there was out there on it. I googled it a fair amount and couldn't find a whole lot of anything with substance. When I ordered it, it was because of pretty good Amazon reviews (ignoring the ones that were posted for some reason other than to help Amazon buyers.)

The good:

The game really is pretty fun. I'll be honest, I put off my finance homework for way too long because I was playing co-op missions and having a blast with them. There is a huge variety of weapons, just enough loot to keep you addicted to looking, and the story is pretty decent. Graphics and playability are pretty good as well and seem to be improving, I get the impression there is a lot of tweaking going on by the developers. It's a lot like Borderlands except that it isn't as smooth or polished, I'm guessing the MMO had a lot to do with this but they're getting there.

The bad:

Lag is hilariously bad sometimes, I've been kicked repeatedly, I'm writing this review because of constant server timeouts. People gripe about the PvP being ruined by Cloakers... to avoid this problem... pick Cloak as your power and be one of the guys people cry about. It's amusingly overpowered. I've also had several bugged missions and several bugged items. My best advice is to simply abandon the mission and keep trying with the items. Leveling is sporadic and comes in big clumps of levels gained but overall it's functional.

In short, when the game is working well it is seriously very fun. When it's not working well, just go find something else to do for a while and try again later. Trion is doing a lot of new things with this game and it clearly has some growing pains.

4.0 out of 5 stars Better than Expected November 10, 2013
Platform for Display:PlayStation 3|Edition:Standard
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Reviews (particularly IGN's scathing coverage) touted this game's release as a complete failure; bugs, poor graphics, incomplete ideas, too many players (in an MMO?) and not enough character advancement to show progress all marred what should have been this generation's precursor to Destiny (can't wait for that one, either). The important (and largely forgotten) thing to remember is that with an online game of this nature, players are going to find a plethora of issues and broken gameplay as they play and patches are the solution. That's just where we are with gaming, for better or worse (I'd like to think for better personally).

With the majority of the patches applied--particular fixing gameplay balance and leveling issues--Defiance is a playable, unique experience that satisfies in customization, co-operative play, and a decent storyline. Since this is a bit of a late review, I will highlight a couple of the interesting things I have found while playing and why I would recommend this to console owners looking for something a little off the beaten path.

With the EGO system (Defiance's answer to leveling) you receive points that are spent on abilities and perks, allowing you to make whatever kind of hero you want in this game around four major powers. Want to be super-fast with the ability to whack baddies in the back of the head for bonuses? Got it. Interested in a stealthy character focused on critical strikes? Yes. Want to make copies of your self to baffle your enemies and reap bonuses to attack for them being a moving target? You guessed it.
