From the producers of Battlestar Galactica, Caprica and Farscape comes Defiance, the critically-acclaimed action-packed tale of courage and survival. It’s 2046 and over 30 years have passed since aliens arrived, changing life on Earth forever. In the frontier town of Defiance, a drifter-turned-lawkeeper (Grant Bowler, True Blood) and the newly-appointed mayor (Julie Benz, Dexter) attempt to lead the human and alien residents through the prejudices and politics that threaten the fragile peace they’ve fought for. Combining epic scope with the intrigue of a small-town drama, Defiance is science fiction at its best. Watch every riveting episode back-to-back and uninterrupted, with exclusive bonus content including deleted scenes and featurettes that go inside this incredible new world.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Frontier at the Ends of Civilization April 30, 2013
    Format:Amazon Instant Video
When Nolan, the jaded scavenging veteran at the heart of the new Syfy series Defiance, strides from the Lawkeeper's office early in the pilot episode, seasoned viewers will recognize the streetscape. With storefronts built of reclaimed materials and stacked cargo compartments, it distinctly resembles the Eavesdown Docks from Joss Whedon's Firefly. And for good reason, since both shows shows channel the same American frontier mythology.

Frederick Jackson Turner's seminal 1893 essay, "The Significance of the Frontier in American History," identified the idea of frontier as the defining trait of American society. Crossing the invisible line from society to wilderness allows individuals to shrug off confining Euro-American stipulations of hierarchy, subjection, religion, and money. But Turner lamented that the closing of the American frontier, according to the 1890 census, marked the end of American pioneer fervor.

Firefly, like Star Trek before that, rejects that closing by moving the frontier line off Earth's surface. New experiences and dynamic individualism remain for us to discover "out there." But Defiance alters that tack, suggesting that the movement of new species into our domain can open new frontiers where we are; the American pioneer ethos can be reinvested where we are. We need only destroy existing civilization to get there.

Defiance's frontier myth doesn't need unpacked; creator Rockne O'Bannon splashes it across the screen in vibrant CGI Technicolor. Nolan's swagger, the city's ad hoc justice, and the contrast between settled urbanity and the vibrant Badlands, all bespeak classic cowboy heroes like John Wayne and Clint Eastwood.

5.0 out of 5 stars Well Written, Well Executed SciFi April 16, 2013
    Format:Amazon Instant Video|Verified Purchase
My husband and I really enjoyed the pilot episode. It was far better than so many recent entries in the genre. We hope our support will keep it on air if (as we hope) the writing and execution continue to hold up to the high standards set in the opener.

4.0 out of 5 stars Definite Potential April 13, 2013
    Format:Amazon Instant Video|Verified Purchase
For some reason the first episode was released early, but for those watching now or watching on the 15th, the show has great potential. Its not perfect, and the first episode has its slow parts, but overall it was enjoyable to watch, especially as you get to the battle near the end. This is the first time a game and tv showed have been tied together like this, and as a player of the game I really want to see Defiance end up successful for everyone involved. We need more companies, and people, willing to try new things and I hope future episodes continue to improve as the story expands and the cast gets used to working together. The cast itself is pretty solid overall with a few well known names involved. Jaime Murray (Spartacus/Warehouse 13) and Julie Benz (Buffy) being two of my favorites. Farscape fans will also notice one of the people behind Defiance is the creator of Farscape, Rockne S. O'Bannon. We need more good sci-fi shows out there and so far Defiance looks like it could be the next one to watch.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really 9/10 stars but only half the options on Amazon. September 20, 2013
    Format:Amazon Instant Video
Since this show is getting such horrible reviews on IMDB I thought I'd bump it up a bit here since this is where you can watch it. Or you can watch it for free from if you have a TV provider like Xfinity or one of the many other ones across the country.

This is SyFy. I don't compare it to Firefly but it has a similar feel. They deal with human issues as a whole on this series, with good acting, almost all characters are shades of grey and even then those shades come out on the darker side. There are good people, but they have to do bad things. There are bad people who step up to do the right thing when necessary. Then there are the Volge who just want war.

This is a very progressive show.

One of my favorite elements of the show is the ending montages. They have haunting covers of songs most of us know and love, wrapping up the triumphs and defeats each episode brings to our characters.

And there are a ton of WTF! moments. This show keeps you on your toes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not yet formulaic April 28, 2013
    Format:Amazon Instant Video|Verified Purchase
Post-apocalyptic shows are all the rage lately (Falling Skies, Revolution, The Walking Dead), and so far (i write this an episode after the pilot) Defiance has a distinct personality among them. Although sci-fi serials that take place on Earth are obviously not as far-reaching as those set in space, this one sort of brings space to Earth by introducing a number of alien races in future St. Louis. Having not read about the game or the show before watching, I have to say that the pilot did a poor job of establishing context. The hope is that the past will be explained a little bit more each episode, preferably in a clever way that does not necessitate constant character flashbacks that have become ubiquitous in television. I am willing to give any new sci-fi production a chance, and so far this one has surpassed my expectations. It doesn't try to emulate any other program in particular (unless you make very broad comparisons), and the casting is spot-on. I am already starting to find myself identifying with some characters and disliking others, which is a good sign. As long as they can maintain a compelling story arc that keeps expanding, while avoiding the trappings of too many "creature of the week" episodes that resolve in one hour, it might just turn out to be a show that lasts more than a season or two.

FINALE 7/9/13 (UPDATE): I just watched the last episode of the season and I have to say that I am wishing 2014 wasn't so far away because the final episode leaves us with revelations and cliffhangers. The mid-season episodes were generally a reasonable balance between a flavor of the week and meaningful contributions to the overarching story. I didn't find Defiance to be addictive like BSG was, but I nonetheless quite looked forward to watching it each week.
