About the Author

Kara Davis is Managing Director at Lantern Books. She is a street activist who got her start as a teen with the Sanctuary Movement in Arizona, and worked many years with Act Up and Fed Up Queers in NYC. She recently attempted some food activism in the "locavore" crazy Hudson Valley by accepting food stamps for pickled vegetables, fresh tofu, seitan, and nut cheese at the farmer's market, and running a sliding scale vegan C.S.A. Kara is a proud volunteer at the Catskill Animal Sanctuary, and lives in a crumbling old house with her girlfriend and too many rescued cats.

Wendy Lee is Publishing Director at Lantern Books. She spent almost ten years at HarperCollins, before which she was an English teacher and English-language copyeditor in China. She is the author of the novel Happy Family (Grove Press, 2008).

Carol J. Adams is the author of the landmark book The Sexual Politics of Meat: A Feminist-Vegetarian Critical Theory and The Pornography of Meat. Besides advancing scholarship and developing theory in the area of interlocking oppressions, Carol has created a series of books that address the vegetarian/vegan experience: Living Among Meat Eaters: The Vegetarian Survival Guide, Help! My Child Stopped Eating Meat! and The Inner Art of Vegetarianism and Meditations on the Inner Art of Vegetarianism. She lives outside Dallas, Texas.

I know it's completely blasphemous to say this, and I don't mean it as an insult to Carol Adams (a person for whom I have enormous respect), but: I actually connected with this book of essays, based on Adams' groundbreaking Sexual Politics of Meat, more than the source material. The essays in Defiant Daughters are fascinating, thoughtful, insightful and something I didn't expect: challenging. I went to liberal arts college, so of course I like to think those women's studies classes I took taught me everything I need to know. But alas. I was pleasantly surprised by the diversity of voices in Defiant Daughters -- which, to my mind, is what makes this book quite special.

I was a vegan before I read this, and I was a vegan before I read the Sexual Politics of Meat; but the personal nature of this book, written by fascinating, smart, inspirational women, gives it something special: the power to teach; to change someone's mind. The greatest compliment I can offer is that I learned something from this book -- some thingS, actually. For that, I am grateful. I highly recommend Defiant Daughters.

Also, men: read this book. It's for us, too.

This is an amazing collection. The Sexual Politics of Meat had a large impact on my life as well, but more than that, it's amazing to see how each of these women took the same material and incorporated it into her politics, activism, career, and personal life. A lot of their stories reminded me of my own journey, and their creative and unique contributions to the work of building a more inclusive and compassionate world gave me lots of ideas for directions to go with my own activism. It was a very empowering and enjoyable read. My sister will be getting this book, as well as the Sexual Politics of Meat, for her 18th birthday.

(Thanks to Lantern for another great book! I am continually impressed with this publisher.)

Every story was so touching. I became fully immersed in this book which made me cry, yet gave me such strength. The authors came from deverse backgrounds but each triumphed over challenges to emmerge stronger and more compassionate toward the plight of women and animals. This has the potential to become a life changer for any reader.

What a fantastic read! Here's a book full of the voices of strong vegan, feminist advocates, examining the intersectionality of veganism and feminism, queerness, disability, eating disorders, fat-positivity, and more! While the book relies on women's experiences and interpretations of Carol J. Adams's "The Sexual Politics of Meat", it veers away from critical theory and is, in essence, the "applied" version of its predecessor. This is really such a thought-provoking, inspiring, and amazing read, perhaps the best non-fiction I've picked up in a while!

The essays in this collection range in writing style from eloquent to gritty. They vary widely in author background, but they also have a lot in common - not just in reference to the text they nearly all refer to by name. Some of the chapters deal with very intimate and difficult subjects - its women talking about oppression and food, so there are many experiences with violence, eating disorders, and more. But the honesty that these writers express creates a very powerful book, and offers much to someone who has not - yet! - read The Sexual Politics of Meat.

This book will strike a chord with anyone who feels, inherently, that nonhuman animals should not suffer for human benefit. While there are many books that encourage compassionate living, this one differs in that deeply personal stories of love, pain, and courage spill onto the page in a way that resonates with readers from many walks of life.

I was so impressed with this book. Obviously I'm interested in the subject or I wouldn't have picked it up, but I don't think I realized what a page-turner it would be. I loved the variety of essays, such different angles tied together by thoughtfulness, complexity, and depth.
