I enjoyed every sentence of this book. I found myself quickly immersed in my brother's unfolding of the message of grace in the gospels. After finishing, my first thought was to donate the book to the library so that others could read it; but I decided to keep it on my shelves so that I can read it with my children when they are older. Thank you, Dane, for your labors in this book!

It was such a joy to read Dane Ortlund's brief reflections on the grace of God in the gospel, seen most clearly in the portrayals of Jesus in the four Gospels! Fresh, winsome, insightful, this little book had me leaping for joy, as my affections for Jesus were stirred and enhanced. Several "aha!" moments combined with several exclamations of "amen!" as Dane's beautiful command of the English language combined with his careful handling of the Gospels as Scripture. God's grace is indeed counter-intuitive, unexpected, surprising, and Dane has provided great help for God's people to revel in God's wondrously "defiant grace"!

Dane Ortlund is a scholar and a gentleman. I met Dane about a year ago after some email correspondence and found him to be a man who truly lives under the radical truth he proclaims in this book. Defiant Grace helped me, and will help you, better appreciate, enjoy, and extend God's grace. Dane is a fantastic writer. I can't wait to read what he will write next.

Defiant Grace (2011) by Dane Ortlund is a short little book exploring the message of amazing grace through the four gospel accounts. In Matthew, he explored "disobedient obedience"; in Mark, "the king as a criminal"; in Luke, "outsiders as insiders"; and in John, "the Creator as creature." For those familiar with the gospel accounts, you are no doubt aware of some of the differences between them, but Ortlund gives us a fresh look at the differences with a specific focus on grace. In his conclusion, he wrote, "The Bible scholars sometimes try to drive a wedge between the Christianity presented in the Gospels and the Christianity presented in the letters of Paul. The Gospels, so the allegation goes, give us moral teaching; the letters give us the gospel of grace" (page 118). He then goes on to show the graciousness of Christ, evident in the words of the gospel.

All the chapters were beneficial and unique, but his discussion of disobedient obedience was particularly appreciated. He shows how Jesus firmly dealt with the legalists, moralists, rule keepers, and Pharisees, suggesting that in their obedience, they were actually disobeying. As a recovering Pharisee, I had much to gain from this chapter.

I would recommend this book if you want to see afresh the amazing grace of Jesus Christ seen in the story of the four gospel accounts.

Dane Ortlund's "Defiant Grace" is a brief book that challenges and inspires those interested in knowing Jesus and understanding His mission.

Ortlund briefly sketches a surprising aspect of Jesus' ministry in each of the four Gospels. From the surprise of disobedient obedience in Matthew to the surprise of creator as creature in John, each chapter is filled with rich insights. I found myself bracketing and underlining sentences on page after page. Words are not wasted and rabbit trails are not chased in this book. Though it is only about 120 pages long, it is deserving of slow and thoughtful reading.

Wow, what an incredible book! This is a wonderful introduction to the four Gospels, but more than that, it's a rich feast of gospel truth that will stir your affections to greater wonder and awe of Christ.

In the introduction, Dane says that his aim is to help us "cherish the gospel", and to "enjoy grace anew... the high-octane grace that takes our conscience by the scruff of the neck and breathes new life into us with a pardon so scandalous that we cannot help but be changed". His method? To walk us through the four accounts of Jesus life, showing how each, in its own way, unveils "scandalous" and "surprising" truths about who Jesus is, and about the nature of his message and mission.

Digging deeply into the biblical text itself, he also draws upon a wealth of scholarship from the past and present (from Athanasius and Augustine; to Calvin, Luther and Edwards; to Spurgeon, J. C. Ryle, Lloyd-Jones, C. S. Lewis; to modern commentators like D. A. Carson, and Kenneth Bailey). And the writing is superb too! C. J. Mahaney says it well in his endorsement - "Dane Ortlund can flat-out write. He is a craftsman of prose."

Most importantly though, page after page I was drawn to marvel at my Saviour. I have no doubt this will be one of those few books I return to again and again, to be reminded of, and revel in, the scandalous grace of the gospel. I give it my highest recommendation.

This book is deftly filled with Evangelical Potency!

It is Good News with Great Joy and Gracious Power
that exposes the nefarious disease of sin and the cure
of God's mercy and love!

The author and Doctor of Doxological Dogma is
scholastically erudite yet fascinatingly simple
in his unpacking of Biblical truth.

I found myself trapped and torn apart as the gospel
of Matthew dug the conscience and motives beneath
my motives out into the open in exposures of the
'secret sin' beneath my sins.

I am so much more thankful for God's love in Jesus
and the fullness of teaching that God has given to us
which says and Shows the extravagance of His love,
the glory of his person, the help available to sinners
and saints, and the fruit that may yet yield from a
Gospel-surrendered life!

And I do concur with Jared C. Wilson that the book
is saturated with some 'doxological whiskey' which
will result in delicious worship !

Ha Glo-Ray !

Great Job Dane !

...or for anyone you can't seem to convince that it's impossible to bridge the gap of sin between us and God. Sometimes it takes an impartial book rather than a relative or friend to get the idea of grace across, that it's a free gift and not something, therefore, we can earn in any capacity.

Well written, comprehensive and 100% biblical. Only a hardened heart against the saving grace of Jesus would prevent this book from being effective. An open heart and mind seeking God's grace will find it here.

This book is a delight. It is short, pithy and meaty. It describes the distinctive message of each of the four Gospels and shows that Jesus and Paul were teaching the same message of grace. Highly recommended.
