Book Description

Danger, intrigue, and searing passion collide in Miriam Minger's DANGEROUS MASQUERADE COLLECTION: A Hint of Rapture, Stolen Splendor, and Defiant Impostor!

DEFIANT IMPOSTOR - With a heavy heart, spirited but low-born Susanna Guthrie agrees to honor the deathbed request of the wealthy young woman who rescued her from a life of poverty. Masquerading as her benefactress, Susanna travels to the Virginia colonies to take the dying heiress’ place as head of the sprawling tobacco plantation Briarwood…and to “marry wisely.”

Once, she would have welcomed the attentions of handsome Adam Thornton. But now, consorting with a “hired hand” is unthinkable—though the raw, sensual power of the rugged plantation manager leaves Susanna breathless. Driven by a desire for vengeance, Adam is ruthlessly determined to win both Briarwood and its beautiful new mistress—only to be undone by a soul inflamed with passion…and a heart ennobled by love.

"Defiant Impostor is entertaining, evocative, and powerful. Miriam Minger creates moods and characters you will remember long after you close the book." - Romantic Times

“Miriam Minger is a master storyteller who illustrates the full gamut of emotions felt by her characters. Emotions so strong that you are pulled into the pages and into their lives.” – Inside Romance

"With Miriam Minger, you're assured of a good read!" - Heartland Critiques

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautifully written story of deception June 21, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
My introduction to Miriam Minger occurred when Twin Passions was offered as a free Kindle download. I enjoyed both the story and the author's writing style, so I didn't hesitate to get Defiant Impostor as another free download.

Interestingly, the plots of the two books are quite similar, involving a young woman impersonating another woman. If you enjoy the plot of this book, do yourself a favor and check out Twin Passions.

Defiant Impostor opens with these words from an English father to his twelve-year-old daughter, Susanna: "Yer late, ye little b*tch!" before he takes a swing at her. Her father regularly abuses her and forces her to beg on the streets for money. As she is approaching puberty, he makes it clear he intends to pimp her, and in fact, he's already selected a repugnant "john". A fortuitous and well-timed accident with a carriage kills Susanna's father and puts her in the care of wealthy Lady Redmayne and her young niece, Camille Clary. Camille's father owns a plantation in Virginia, and he sent Camille at the age of three to England for her education. While Susanna recovers, Lady Redmayne offers to hire her as the maid to Camille. Susanna eagerly accepts, and the two young girls become best friends, despite their difference in status.

Seven years later, Camille's father dies, and the two young women set sail for Virginia so Camille can take her place as lady of the plantation. She becomes fatally ill during the voyage, and she begs Susanna to impersonate her should she die, as she does not want the plantation to fall into her aunt's hands.

Susanna must now learn to navigate the upper class world she has only viewed as an outsider.

5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, well-balanced story! June 21, 2012
By Nepps
Format:Kindle Edition
This story was well done. It also had a great story line and was well paced. I dislike stories in which the conflict and misunderstanding between the h/h are drawn out for too long seemingly only to lengthen the story. I also dislike when the misunderstanding seems petty and could be easily resolved, but isn't. In this story, I totally the depth of misunderstanding, but the author resolved it quite nicely. I also appreciate that there were no kidnappings, which are typical of these stories. The fiery heroone and strong hero were well matched.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Story But Too Much Profanity July 10, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Others have given summaries of the plot, so I'll just tell what I thought of the novel. I don't think I've even read a book so filled with profanity. It would have been a much stronger story without this. Sometimes the misunderstandings between Susanna and Adam get frustrating, but they were all believable. There are also very explicit sex scenes after Susanna and Adam are married.

There were incidents of children becoming indentured at 11 or 13 years of age in the book. According to English law, an indentured servant had to be 21 years old. There were also point of view changes within the same section.

Regardless of these problems, I found the story to be riveting. I really liked both Susanna and Adam and was pulling for them all the way. I just wish it had been a cleaner book.

2.0 out of 5 stars this is the kind of book i hate June 21, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
very 1980s....lol...if that is what you like....relationships based on equal parts lust and mistrust, jerk heros, otherwise smart and strong heroine who loves jerk in spite of all the jerkiness, love scenes that start out as rape and end up with brainless girl realizing she loves the neanderthal more!!!
Whenever I read these kind of books I end up taking out my anger on my husband. I kept reading and reading, hoping the author wouldn't go there, and later, hoping she would redeem the characters, because I really wanted it to be a good book, and because I have enjoyed some of her other books.....sadness....

3.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good... kind of frustrating... October 27, 2012
By Kellie
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I would honestly give this book four, maybe even five stars. But there was too many sex scenes for my taste, and it was a somewhat frustrating book. The plot is pretty interesting, and the characters were pretty well developed. It was easy to connect with Susanna and understand her. Adam was a little more difficult to like through the whole book. It also has swearing, a little too much in my opinion. If you don't mind sex here and there and language, I would say give it a try! But I probably won't read it again because of that.

4.5****This is now one of my favorites by this author.

I was hooked from the first page. Susanna's character was very easy to connect with from the beginning and how could anyone not fall for Adam! I definetely was frustrated when Adam was courting Susanna because she would just leave him hanging and made strong efforts to deceive him...though she had her reasons. Then the tables were turned and I got frustrated at Adam for not having any trust...but again he did have his reasons. The author does really well in describing the hurt and pain each had suffered in their own life which made you understand both sides. Usually, I tend to favor one person over the other but this story made me love both Susanna and Adam. Susanna's temper was also not over the top and annoying like some other books.

The reason why I didn't rate this book a 5 stars was because some parts of the story didn't really flow for me. !(Might contain some spoilers)! When Susanna accepted to take Camille's inheritance in her place, it's common sense to have a witness around or some type of proof right? The thought of leaving the death of Camille from her aunt was a bit odd too...especially since she was so dear to the lady...however there would be no story then. In the end when the aunt found out her niece died during the trip to Virginia, you would think she would be more distraught. It was a good book but I feel more credit should have been given to Camille and her role in the story, even if she was just in the first 20 or so pages. An epilogue would have been nice too. I would like to know how many kids they had since they mentioned it a few times...

More About the Author

Miriam Minger's first novel Twin Passions was called "A fabulous debut!" by Romantic Times. Since then, Miriam has swept readers into her unforgettable historical romances with her strong, forceful heroes and fiery heroines. She is the winner of several Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice Awards--including Best Medieval Historical Romance of the Year for The Pagan's Prize--and a two-time RITA Award Finalist for A Hint of Rapture and Captive Rose.

Miriam Minger's contemporary novel Ripped Apart, "An absolute gem of a romantic suspense. Five Stars!" has won rave reviews from romance and thriller readers alike. Miriam is also happy to announce that her Little Mike and Maddie series of children's picture books about a lovable pair of dogs and their motorcycle adventures is available under her pen name, Miriam Aronson.

Bestselling author Miriam Minger says: It's been a wonderful experience to have all my novels published as eBooks, but the greatest thrill for me as a writer is when readers take the time to let me know they enjoyed one of my stories...

"I have read hundreds if not thousands of books in my lifetime and not once have I ever been moved to comment on one until now. This is without a doubt one of the best books I have ever read. I laughed. I cried. I remained at the edge of my seat devouring every single word you wove with this incredible story. I just wanted to let you know how deeply this story moved me and to thank you for creating it."

Wow. This one left me speechless...and grateful. I had done my job, which is to make you feel like you've dropped feet first into a world that captures your imagination and emotions so vividly you might be living and breathing the story. And that's one of the purest joys of reading, isn't it? I know it is for me...and it is my hope to continue to write books that make you feel the passion, live and breathe the adventure, laugh and cry and touch your heart.
