Maggie: Modern heroine, April 2, 2009
This review is from: Defining Moments: Insights Into This Soul-Filled Sistah And How I Redefined Myself (Paperback)
Two and a half children, a beautiful house with a white picket fence, a happy loving family . . . These are the things we want when we think about our lives. Unfortunately, that is not how it always works out. For Maggie, the moment came when she realized that her dreams were shattered, everything she had hoped for had been lost, even her will to live. You can't read this story without feeling her pain. You don't need to have lived the same experiences to understand loss and sorrow.
This empathy soon leads to feelings of rage for the men around her who care so little for her feelings, her dreams, her life. Like the epic heroes, Maggie rises from the depths of despair to conquer her adversaries. She picks up the pieces and becomes an example for all women whose lives don't turn out the way they dreamed they would when they were little.
Maggie is not a distant character, she is real. She is an inner city woman, the girl next door, the girl you went to high school with, your daughter, sister or mother. She is the one who hopes and dreams and then somehow has those dreams pulled out from under her. She is the strong woman who gets defiantly up and screams at the top of her lungs that she will not be conquered. She is a modern heroine.
This story is not always pretty, but that's because life isn't either. Aside from being an engrossing story, the book is filled with personal insight about life, tools to help you make it through and references to web sites and groups designed to help. If your life hasn't been picture perfect, or you know someone who has or is walking through the fire, then I recommend you read this book.
