3.0 out of 5 stars Electroclash bandwagon, April 22, 2004
By
This review is from: Defining Tech (Audio CD)
This is one of the many Electroclash compilations. While some of us have heard many of these tracks before, many others can use this as an introduction to some of the new Electro bands that have come out in the past few years. Many of these bands have their own labels. Some are on the Emperor Norton label. Some bands like Bis have been around many years and seem to fit in with Peaches and Felix Da Housecat. Some bands like Adult. stand out and maybe they are best represented by their own album. Of course, Fischerspooner is included, but maybe their new single "Emerge" is a better track than this one "Invisible." Other artists that stand out are Memory Boy and Miss Kitten & The Hacker. Some of these compilations are already jumping the gun, but at least you can get together with some of your friends and take some speed and listen to this CD for hours. Maybe this CD will make people want to look at earlier Electro tracks. Soft Cell is putting out a new CD too this month and from what I have heard some songs by them would fit in nicely. Also it's sad that other Electro artists like Andrea Parker or Dot Allison are not included in some of these collections.

2.0 out of 5 stars WARNING: this is BORING!!, January 7, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Defining Tech (Audio CD)
This album sure looks cool, but don't fall for it...I am a big fan of several of the artists/bands on this disk, but this particular selection is snoresville! Almost every track is boring..Its not terrible as background noise, but who needs background noise when you could have so much more?

1.0 out of 5 stars Defining $#!%!!, December 27, 2003

sandwich (Victoria, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Defining Tech (Audio CD)
I ended up buying this CD and the end of a long music-hunting venture - I listened to it from the store and liked what I heard. Some gorgeous thumping beats, droning ominous waves, scattered digital bleeps. Vintage and simplicity clashing with a glam & rock 80s club influence. After a few weeks of listening to this album on & off I realised there were only a few tracks I liked and the rest were just annoying full-ins. It came to the stage that I was immediately skipping to the few tracks I liked and when I got sick of those, this CD had proven its short-life over the longwinded self indulgent bull$hit on the inside of the cover. Basically this is a compilation of some of the most boring and irritating music, milking the most out of an embarrassing fad and trying to look slick, cool and arty about it.
'Invisible' is the most terrible song ever! Why - if they're trying to justify the concept behind the album - would they make this the first track?! 'End Starts Today (Nail Me Down Freestyle Mix)' is far too try-hard. I used to like 'Contagious' but its repititiveness and lack of depth really gets on my nerves. Artifical Intelligence makes me cringe right at the start with the most stupid intro and it leaves you expecting more... 'Silver Screen Shower Sceen' is still kinda cool but it can be overplayed very easily.
Don't buy this CD - if you're into minimal or raw DIY computer 'tech', research a few names and hunt them down in the stores. La Tigre, Itchee and Scratchee, Peaches, Múm, etc.
