Definite Medication: Containing Therapeutic Facts Gleaned from Forty Years Practice, by Eli G. Jones, was purchased because we had a dying cat, and wanted to try homeopathic support, as the regular vet had given up. The book, a reprint of a 1911 medical text, uses so many arcane abbreviations and references that it was virtually unusable, except perhaps to a medical practitioner, who might be familiar with the terms, or able to convert grains to contemporary measurements. Since I use homeopathy regularly (no, I am not a medical professional - I use it for my immediate family, and chiefly to supplement regular medical treatment), I thought it was worth a try, but it proved beyond my skill level. I eventually went with a homeopathic vet, who tried a succession of remedies, but none availed.

I found Jones's book to have some use for me as a quick Repertory: that is, to find one's symptoms, and see what remedies are worth further investigation. Once I have only, say, 5-8 remedies to research, then I'll use a Materia Medica to study the various remedies. I usually use Margaret Tyler's Homeopathic Drug Pictures to get started, then Vermeulen's Concordant Materia Medica to read more in detail, and finally T.F. Allen's Encyclopedia of Pure Materia Medica if I suspect I have a peculiar symptom that appears infrequently.

So, Jones's book has some utility for a non-medical person. However, there are many other works available that are far more accessible for home use. If I had to pick only one, it would unquestionably be E. B. Nash's Leaders in Homeopathic Therapeutics.
