This is purely a book of blues songs. This books contains well known as well as some more obscure blues pieces. The arrangements range from very basic to very complete. None of the arrangements provide extended "blues solos" or blues riffs"....(this sort of improvisation will be up to you). The arrangements do however give you complete songs, with key, time-signature, and tempo markings. It also includes chords as well as single note melodies AND it inclues bass lines.

NOTE: This is NOT a "how to" book. If you want blues theory and/or instruction look elsewhere. This is a song book.

If you are wondering what songs are included, here's a list. I like that there are well known blues songs from various eras and people: New Orleans, Chicago, Bessie Smith, WC Handy songs etc. It is a good all-round book. I wouldn't have minded fuller arrangements on some songs (that's why only 4 stars) but the books is still a great buy. The ring binding is nice; it stays on the music stand.

Most blues books for piano have been disappointing so I had low expectations. It's an interesting mix of great old blues songs (Willie Dixon) with some slightly newer stuff such as John Lee Hooker and B.B. King. Most of the arrangements are piano accompaniments to singers with the right hand playing the melody, but many do include fills and intros that I found helpful. Jelly Roll Blues and Wolverine Blues are full piano solos.

The second edition is a standard glue binding, not spiral.
