Editorial Reviews

Product Description

The mellow soft rock magic and universal pop sensibilities of Bread's timeless sound have never sounded better than on Rhino's Definitive Collection, the most comprehensive 2-disc retrospective of their hugely popular work ever assembled. Elegantly crafted and effortlessly melodic, Bread's signature sound was powered by the songwriting finesse and soulful vocals of David Gates. This new compilation offers 30 delicious slices of musical artistry from one of the biggest acts of the 70's.

2.0 out of 5 stars an incredibly redundant and abridged collection; an appalling release from Rhino, March 30, 2006
Released in March of 2006, this so-called 2 CD "Definitive Collection" is a joke. Why? Because all it basically is is an abridged version of the 2 CD "Retrospective" that Rhino released in 1996--perhaps Rhino plan to take that one out of print soon. There is a mere one song here ("I Want You With Me") that doesn't appear on the "Retrospective", and the "Retrospective" also contains a wealth of songs from David Gates' solo career, plus a couple of other tracks featuring James Griffin, all of which have been excluded from "Definitive Collection", as have some of the Bread songs. If Rhino had packed this "Definitive Collection" to the brim with Bread songs, it would have at least justified the exercise... I mean, Bread's core discography isn't that big in the first place, and it's possible to fit all of their great songs onto a 2 CD set (not counting the wealth of David Gates solo material). But this "Definitive Collection" sure as heck is NOT definitive, and it's appalling that Rhino even released it.

Don't be fooled. Even though the "Retrospective" isn't an entirely definitive collection either of Bread & Gates material, it's a lot closer to one than this is. Quite simply, you're MUCH better off with the "Retrospective" than with this.

1.0 out of 5 stars WHAT WERE THEY THINKING???, May 27, 2006
Granted, I have never listened to this album, but judging from the looks of things (especially the song listings) it is highly unlikely I ever will! A more accurate title for this CD would have been "The Redundant Collection." Having been a Breadhead since their heyday I have owned every single studio LP on vinyl (and later on CD) and I never thought in my worst nightmare that I would give a Bread album (even a compilation) a one star rating - UNTIL NOW. Sure every song on this CD is superbly crafted and wonderfully inspired AND sounds great with digital remastering - but Elektra/Rhino did the exact same thing ten years ago on the outstanding "Retrospective" double CD - not to mention adding great solo material from David Gates as well as Jimmy Griffin's awesome "For All We Know" demo! To this day I am still proud to be a Breadhead and for a company as prolific as Rhino to rehash a great collection of wonderfully inspiring hits and first-rate album tracks is not only redundant, but ridiculous AND insulting! Come on Rhino let's use some logic here!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Baby I'm-A Want Something Else from Bread, July 30, 2006
By Mike B. (San Diego, CA United States) - See all my reviews
The other reviews are right. No one needs this repackage of Bread hits. Not when there's RETROSPECTIVE (the 2-CD collection) or THE BEST OF BREAD (a single disc that uses the cover art of the very first Bread collection, and has more songs than that 1973 release).

I noticed that these DEFINITIVE COLLECTIONS have the same artwork design. Just another example of the record labels putting their classic artists into a sausage machine.

Rhino should give Bread fans what they really want--a CD release of 1977's LOST WITHOUT YOUR LOVE. This was a RIAA-certified Gold record. It's baffling to me that it has never come out on CD.

2.0 out of 5 stars boring, uninspired cash in
Yet another hits collection. How boring. All the same tracks as always. Why not re-release David Gates's solo albums or James Griffin's?

3.0 out of 5 stars Question: How is the sound of this collection compared to the Retrospective discs?
Looking at the track listing will leave any Bread fan disheartened. But one thing that would justify a purchase of this would be the sound. This is digitally remastered. Read more
