5.0 out of 5 stars Absolute Gem!, August 10, 2006

Yes. An absolute gem, and no qualms about the judicious selection of prime time, Gaughan. Fellow Scot crooner, Dougie McLean once interrupted his set in Alice Springs to explain, if not apologise, that his preference was for 'sad songs'. Dougie's voice has a purity, almost to the point of innocence, in his laments. Dick Gaughan is the counterpoint: a lived in instrument whose experience can nail the lyric interests with deep mourning. Yes, the selection is mostly sad ballads, the 'muckle sangs' capped by the awesome, 'Both Sides of the Tweed'. Dick's writing is up there with the traditional stuff. Voice and guitar: the Scot's contempary folk scene has no equal.

If you want to find out why Dick Gaughan is a legend, this collection will give you half the answer. It features sad and lovely melodies that show off his voice, his inimitable timing and phrasing, his warmth, and his virtuoso guitar work. You'll probably love it. What it won't reveal is Dick Gaughan's lifetime devotion to working class politics and his hard-edged critique of power and class. What makes his work more than just lovely is the way he brings together present day politics and musical tradition to empower us all. Tracks on this CD weren't chosen by Dick Gaughan, but by the record company, and only from tracks they had rights to--which is how the whole "Definitive Collection" series is made. For a "best of" album created by the artist, and truly reflecting his career, choose the 2-CD collection "Prentice Piece."
