The Essential Flying Burritos,

This review is from: Definitive Collection (Audio CD)
The Flying Burrito Bros. definitive collection is the one you want for your collection featuring both classic albums with Gram Parsons, including the landmark debut, The Gilded Palace Of Sin, and the follow up, Burrito Deluxe, the one key element that makes this compilation stand out from the rest is, you get both albums complete and all the tracks in order the way they were originally recorded, all on one disc, where as I've noticed on other compilations the tracks are mixed and scattered, plus there's three bonus tracks on here, a prime example of Parsons' cosmic American music, "The Train Song", I've never heard anything like this before and Dave Dudley's, "Six Days On The Road", great instrumentation on this one and there's Buck Owens', "Close Up The Honky Tonks", which sounds like a demo. After listening to their follow up, Burrito Deluxe, don't pay any attention to what the critics say, this album is as good as the Gilded Palace, just a different approach with a little more on the rock side, and a little less Sneaky Pete, Parsons contributing writing on six of the eleven tracks and also listen for the Burritos version of, Wild Horses, Gram Parsons did ol' Mick proud, maybe even prouder, a great version, this is a AM/Universal 2002 release, 96k/24 bit mastered from the original master tapes, with a thick booklet with pictures and notes of Parsons and The Flying Burrito Bros..

Hot Burrito #1 & Hot Burrito #2 !!!,

This review is from: Definitive Collection (Audio CD)
Although called 'The Definitive Collection', this is in fact a reissue of the Burritos' first two albums - the massively influential "The Gilded Palace Of Sin" and "Burrito Deluxe", plus one or two other little known gems such as the single "Train Song" and the classics "Six Days On The Road" and "Close Up The Honky Tonks". No material later than "Burrito Deluxe"(1970) is included here.
In 1968, following on from the ground breaking "Sweetheart Of The Rodeo" (critically acclaimed but commercially toxic), ex-Byrds Chris Hillman and Gram Parsons decided to continue following their dream of playing Country and Western sentiment (white man's blues) within the framework of Rock - very risky given the background of the late 60's counterculture ("Easy Rider" and all that). Their dream became "The Gilded Palace Of Sin". It's hard to know where to start when reviewing "The Gilded Palace". Many thousands (millions probably) of words have been written in praise of this album. To me it's an album which can be played ad infinitum - the last word in real country-rock (not the saccharine Eaglesque fare we've been subjected to since the early 70's). Some songs have an almost Gospel feel about them, when the organ sound comes swirling through the mix. This is an album to be treasured. Moving on, "Burrito Deluxe" can't really compare with the first album - which still leaves it head and shoulders above about 90% of everything else in the genre. The Burritos' take on Dylan's "If You Gotta Go, Go Now" has a punk-rock feel which pre-dates punk-rock by a good seven years. Their version of "Wild Horses" beats the Stones original into a cocked-hat and then some. This is a great oppurtunity to buy the two best albums the Burritos ever made.

I have loved these guys since day one, so any CD is worthwhile. This contains most of their best songs and is well worth the price. If you like Gram and the boys, but don't have any of their music, then buy this NOW!
