Excellent Collection From Humble Pie!,
By
This review is from: Definitive Collection (Audio CD)
Seeing as though A&M Records here in the United States has pretty much ignored Humble Pie's catalog (most are available from Japan as expensive imports) this collection is way long overdo. Founded by ex-Small faces Stevie Marriott and who's lineup included one highly talented guitarist/songwriter named Peter Frampton who originally was a member of The Herd, a British pop rock act, Humble Pie are best compared to Led Zeppelin in that they played soul combined with rock n' roll with lots of grunt. This collection includes seventeen tracks spanning the band's seventies career. The standouts are many including several songs from the band's excellent "Performance: Rockin' The Fillmore" album with "I Don't Need No Doctor" and "Four Day Creep". Other superb tracks include "Natural Born Woman", "Big Black Dog", "Live With Me", "Shine On", "Stone Cold Fever", "Hot N' Nasty", "30 Days In The Hole" and "Black Coffee". Frampton would leave after three years with the band to pursue what would become a highly successful solo career. Humble Pie continued to record several excellent albums following Frampton's departure such as "Smokin" and "Eat It" but unfortunately the followup albums "Thunderbox" and "Street Rats" were unsuccessful for the most part and when Marriott reformed Humble Pie in the eighties the few albums released then were hardly noticed. In 1991 talks of a reunion with Peter Frampton would unfortunately never materialize due to Marriott's death that year and the world lost an extremely talented singer/songwriter. The remastering on this "Definitve Collection" is excellent with crisp highs, increased midrange and extended output levels. A must have for classic rock fans worldwide.

Marriott and Co. tackled blues & rock with enthusiasm and competence in the 60's and 70's and this collection is representative of their best work.

'remastering' doesn't sound any better...,
This review is from: Definitive Collection (Audio CD)
This cd claims to be 'remastered'. You would think that means it would sound better than previous releases. But it does not.. not at all. I bought this one, assuming it would have a better sound than the 1999 'Best Of' cd I already had. In fact, it sounds exactly the same. Don't bother buying if you have any old cd's of Humble Pie.

Good Old School Rock,

It was refreshing (pardon the choice of the word) to hear some rock from the past in all of it's digitally recorded glory. Mastered on tape of course, there is the low level hiss during an intro that anyone that grew up prior to the CD was used to.A good range of Humble Pie's talent is on this album, from electric blues rock to hard rock - I'd recommend it for your collection.

A Rockin band with a handful of major Hits,

Humble Pie / The Definitive Collection: This 17 track single CD is the right one for the average fan of this late 60's, early 1970's, Rock N Roll band. This is not a perfect CD, there is a lot of non essential stuff, but the key songs are all here and they deserve to be added to anyone's Rock collection. Four Stars.

Proves What A Great Band These Guys Really Were,

This is one of those collections where you can easily skip the first few songs from the earliest records and still have enough great tunes left to be worth the price of the disc. By the time I saw them live, right before they released Rockin' The Fillmore, Humble Pie were the loudest, toughest, and tightest blues-rock outfit on the scene, and this CD certainly bears that out. If you love Steve Marriot's voice (as I do), add a star. Even after Peter Frampton left to become the seventies arena-rock icon everyone loved to hate, these guys still belted out the blues-rock with real balls. If you are looking for that kind of thing, buy it and PLAY IT LOUD!

I was a 10 years old in 68, so what I heard was top 40.....by the time I was a bit older to hear Humble Pie, all I knew was '30 Days in the Hole' and 'I Don't Need No Doctor'.......Then of course Peter Frampton 'Live' in 75-76....so hey man, this has the music that I grew up with and I loved, but somehow I went right through it. Hell, I didn't know that Peter Frampton was a major player, until I downloaded the album and listened. I kept saying I know that guy. I know that there is plenty of other tunes out there by 'Humble Pie' and I'll get there, but this is really the Definitive Collection.......I love it and the sound quality is damn awesome too.............

Humble Pie was a British band of a new found tradition, a Thanksgiving table set of US blues, shouts, rock rolls and all the fixin's.1969 started out with successful FM radio stallwards and newcomers from second Brit Invasion; i.e. Cream Fleetwood Mac Ten Years After etc.. Pie had the envious beginning of having an already semi-famous and respected singer in Steve Marriot of mid/late '60's fame with Small Faces and an up-and-coming teenage guitarist, Peter Frampton. Things looked good for a rough and tumble band... "Natural Born Woman", the first single, raised eyebrows and fists in concert, but not on the charts. Slowly, creeping, Pie made its way onto FM radio as a poor sister to Rolling Stones. As a live attraction, Pie drew big and played best. I know of a girlfriend who bought tickets for an ex- a b-day present and sometimes rock and roll amazes with the whirlwind of relationships just from hearing this a changed life.. kinda "30 Days in the Hole" "C'Mon Everybody" revives a time when a slice o' Pie satisfies like a "4 Day Creep" and a "Hot n' Nasty" I don't need no doctor! |
