5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Compilation!, May 8, 2004

This review is from: Definitive Collection (Audio CD)
I have purchased this Lionel Richie and The Commodores double CD in the UK. If you compare it to the US Definitive Collection, the US version has nothing on this compilation. It has all Lionel's big hits, and more, from all his solo works and as a member of the Commodores. I'm not a big Commodores fan, but listening to this compilation would make anyone like me become one. Listening to the Commodores songs on this CD shows you just how good the Commodores were. This compilation also has two songs on it that I don't believe are on any other Lionel Richie CDs. Those songs, "I Forgot" and "To Love A Woman" duet with Enrique Iglesias are both superb songs. I Forgot is a beautiful love ballad that really touches the heart. Although To Love A Woman is more of an Enrique, it deserves its place on this compilation as another beautiful Lionel Richie song. I would highly recommend this Definitive Collection over the US version anyday.

5.0 out of 5 stars a Great overview, October 8, 2006
This review is from: Definitive Collection (Audio CD)
Lionel Richie is One of the Few Artists who truly did it the right way both as a member of a very Successful Band&then later on as a Solo Artist. He understood what Words&Music was truly all about. his material covered R&B,Pop,Gospel&country. He didn't sound like anybody else&just always understood the power of using the Bridge in his music. the Man is One of the All time Greatest Artists as a Singer,Songwriter&all around force. so many great songs that truly stand the test of time. this is what a Double Set is all about. Lionel Richie is One of My All Time Favorite Artists.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is an Import "Best Of" worth the price!, October 27, 2006
This review is from: Definitive Collection (Audio CD)
Both as a founder member of the Commodores as well as a solo artist, Lionel Richie is one of the best singers/composers/performers from "the miraculous MOTOWN Hit Maker". This import compilation has a very good selection from both stages in LR career, including the wonderful hits "Easy", "Brick House", the nice and funky instrumental "Machine Gun", "Stuck On You", "Hello", "Do It To Me" (single version), "Love Will Conquer All" and more. If you're planning to go into Lionel Richie's magnificent career in music, this CD is definitely for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Quality soul music from the seventies and eighties, February 21, 2005
This review is from: Definitive Collection (Audio CD)
Motown's golden decade was the sixties, after which several of their stars quit or departed for rival labels. Of the new artists that Motown signed in the seventies, the Commodores were easily their best and most successful. Eventually their lead singer, Lionel Richie, left the group to pursue a solo career. The Commodores continued without him but only scored one major hit - Nightshift, a tribute to Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson. This compilation omits Nightshift but includes all the important hits that Lionel Richie had, both with the Commodores and as a solo singer.

The Commodores began mixing hard-edged funk songs with soulful ballads but the latter proved to be more popular and these came to dominate their music. Machine gun (their first hit) and Too hot to trot were their most successful funky singles, but the songs that they are best remembered for are all ballads. Three times a lady became a number one hit for them in Britain and America. Conway Twitty covered it and took it into the country top ten, proving that a great song can be adapted to any style of music. Easy, Sail on and Still (all of which made the UK top ten) are other great Commodores ballads.

Lionel Richie was even more successful as a solo singer than he had been as lead singer of the Commodores. Dispensing with the funky songs, he focused entirely on ballads. He even wrote one for Kenny Rogers (Lady - an American number one hit) following which he produced an entire album for Kenny (Share your love). So even if his solo career had flopped, he showed that he could have a career as a songwriter and producer. He didn't need to worry as his own hits kept coming. Endless love (with Diana Ross), Truly, All night long, Running with the night, Hello, Say you say me and Dancing on the ceiling all made the UK top ten while Lionel was with Motown.

This compilation provides a very comprehensive collection of Lionel Richie's music, with and without the Commodores. I was slightly disappointed by the omission of Deep river woman, a track featuring the country super-group Alabama. It would have been nice if they'd included Nightshift too. Both those tracks can be found elsewhere. For most people, this is the only Lionel Richie album they will ever need.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Essential Lionel Richie/Commodores Collection, July 21, 2006
This one has it all. Great selection of songs. Outstanding mix. All the hits. The DVD

will only play on a computer. It appears to be a region 2. They don't say that in the

ad. Lionel played such an important part of music during the 70's & 80's. Nothing is

left out here. Better selection of songs than the American version. Buy it just for that,

It is worth it. All Commodore and Richie fans deserve the best. Here it is.
