About the Artist

Cilla Black OBE (born Priscilla Maria Veronica White on 27 May 1943) is an English singer, actress and television performer who has been successful as an entertainer from 1963 through the present day. She is most famous worldwide for her successful singles "Anyone Who Had A Heart", "You're My World", and "Alfie". After a successful recording career and a brief time as a comedy actress, she became the best paid female presenter in British television history. In September 2009, Cilla's 45 years in show-business is celebrated by EMI (the record label which launched her career) with the release of this CD/DVD set alongside a series of other digital download releases which include a remixed single, a remixes album and re-issues of all of Cilla's original EMI studio albums.

Product Description

Cilla Black outsold all other female recording artists in Britain during the 1960s and was the second most successful act after The Beatles to emerge out of the Liverpool Merseybeat boom. She has to date released 15 studio albums and 36 singles (many of which charted world-wide). She went on to become Britain's most popular TV entertainer and host two of the longest-running Saturday evening entertainment shows of the 1980s and 1990s - Blind Date (1985-2003) and Surprise, Surprise (1984-2001). This set includes all of Cilla's 19 Top Forty hits (including her two number one singles, `Anyone Who Had A Heart' & `You're My World') plus classic covers and other essential Cilla tracks - also included are 5 songs which debut on CD format and 6 previously unreleased tracks. The DVD contains over 20 performances, many taken from her hugely successful BBC TV series simply entitled `Cilla' - this popular TV series ran from 1968 to 1976 reaching, at its peak, over 18 million viewers each episode!

3.0 out of 5 stars Buy it for the DVD - 60s Cilla great, 70s Cilla dull, October 17, 2009
This review is from: Definitive Collection [2 CD + PAL/Region 0 DVD] (Audio CD)
This first ever DVD release for Cilla Black has sent her fans into raptures of orgasmic delight and who can blame them ?

For me, it is 60s Cilla singing mostly original material that truly impresses and makes this CD-cum-DVD compilation a worthwhile buy. Just listen or watch her powerful live performance of "You're My World" on the Royal Variety Show, or "Where Is Tomorrow" on Top Of The Pops, or even her duet of "The Look Of Love/Walk On By" with Cliff Richard and you'll see what I mean. All great stuff and in black and white.

Cilla's early jet black voice is an unusual instrument - you either love it or hate it. At the very least, it's unique and distinctive. However, as soon as we get to the colour clips, ie roughly from 1970 onwards, you get a totally different Cilla - softer, mellower and sadly, for the most part, duller. These performance clips from her 70s TV series consist of too many pointless covers which only expose her limited interpretive range with other people's songs like "I Am Woman", "You're So Vain", "Help Me Make It Through The Night" and "When Will I See You Again".

A great pity that most of her 60s TV appearances no longer exist, else we'd have been given performance clips of her many hits from that era rather than later versions of those songs from the mid-70s.

Buy it for the DVD if nothing else. The 60s clips alone are worth the price of this compilation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cilla Black - USA, you don't know what you've missed!, October 26, 2009
By
This review is from: Definitive Collection [2 CD + PAL/Region 0 DVD] (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful collection of recorded songs and TV performances of the UK legend that is Cilla Black! Burt Bacharach praised her singing for the emotion she portrayed in many of his songs. Cilla's voice was, and still is, powerful and emotional. To this day she remains the biggest selling UK female singer of the 1960's. She has still sold more records in the UK than Madonna! Listen to this and you will understand why!

Cilla has a unique voice and a unique singing talent. Nobody else sounds like her. She has been one of the UK's biggest stars since 1964 and remains so to this day. Do yourself a favour and buy this collection!

5.0 out of 5 stars A 3-disc set that truly lives up to its monumental title!, September 24, 2009
This review is from: Definitive Collection [2 CD + PAL/Region 0 DVD] (Audio CD)
The set is a celebration of the Kylie Minogue of the 1960s! Yes, I am talking about Cilla Black who between 1963 and 1978 was also signed to Parlophone/EMI. She was during this time one of the label's most successful recording acts.

This career-spanning compilation is released to celebrate Cilla's 45th showbiz anniversary and includes all of her Top 40 hits, highlights from all her EMI studio albums and best of all for the fans a nice bumper batch of collectibles (some tracks which debut on CD and six of which are previously unreleased). The icing on the cake of this release and probably its biggest selling point is CB's first ever music DVD. The REGION FREE DVD (which is in a PAL colour format) features stunning live performances from the archives at BBC TV filmed between 1964 and 1976.

A VERY IMPORTANT NOTE: THE MAJORITY OF THE ORIGINAL BBC VIDEO TAPES CONTAINING CILLA'S PERFORMANCES FROM THE 1960S HAD BEEN SADLY WIPED. ALL CONCERNED HOWEVER WERE THRILLED TO STILL FIND MANY GEMS FROM CILLA'S SIXTIES POP PEAK AS WELL AS SOME EQUALLY STUNNING CLIPS FROM THE SEVENTIES!

Cilla also has a new album of club remixes 'CILLA ALL MIXED UP' which is available as an mp3 download release from amazon.com. Fans will also find digitally remastered download re-issues of all Cilla's original studio albums. Enjoy!!
