Biography

Shelby Lynne was destined to be a singer. Born a singer. She was raised in rural Alabama by musical parents who stressed individuality and the importance of standing apart from others. A terrible student, but avid reader, she loved the written lyric and a beautiful melody. Around the house she was surrounded by country music from the past, Hank Williams, Dottie West, Waylon Jennings, as well as… Read more in Amazon's Shelby Lynne Store

Editorial Reviews

Starting out as a mainstream country singer, earning a degree of commercial success, peer respect and critical acclaim while chafing against the Nashville system, with I Am Shelby Lynne, Lynne took control of her career and began making music on her own terms, reemerging as a hard-rocking, guitar-slinging blonde singer/songwriter with a knack for bluesy rock `n' roll and emotionally raw balladry. The Definitive Collection presents 21 stunning highlights drawn from Shelby Lynne's decade and a half, nine album career. Highlights feature her early country hits I'll Lie Myself To Sleep, Things Are Tough All Overfeeding' Kind Of Lonely Tonight and Slow Me Down, as well as the later hits that earned her a Grammy 'Gotta Get Back,' 'Life Is Bad,' 'Thought It Would be Easier,' 'Your Lies,' 'Killin' Kind' and 'Wall In Your Heart.' Also featured are the non-album rarities 'Miss You Sissy' and 'Break Me Open.'

5.0 out of 5 stars Remarkable Voice!, March 26, 2007

Shelby has a remarkable voice of musical emotion when she sings. She can take the most "tired" song and sparkle new life in it. You won't be disapponited in adding this CD to your collection, no matter what your musical tastes are...

This career-spanning compilation (1989-2005) is a nice introduction to Shelby Lynne, with cuts from all stages of her career in chronological order. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Shelby has gone thru several stages........., August 24, 2008

....country, sort of jazz, pop/rock...this album will give you an excellent overview. From the early country to the much heavier "I Am Shelby Lynne" she has displayed a clear, strong voice that is always a pleasure to hear. WOW. If you think I'm hooked, you're right. [All of that could be said of her kid sister, Allison Moorer...one family, two babes, alas one tragedy that has shaped them both].

I really don't know why Shelby isn't a bigger deal, with a ton of platinum records. Maybe it's what I said above...she's a pure singer who is really tough to classify. Still, what a dish, and what a voice!! I suppose my two favorites of hers are "Temptation" and "Identity Crisis", her most Blues/Jazz offerings. You really should have ALL her discs, but if you only can afford one record of a great singer, or if you're looking for an introduction, grab this; the girl can flat-out sing.
