Excellent Book,

This review is from: The Definitive Guide to Medical School Admission (Paperback)
Helpful lists of top ranked research schools, hospitals, etc..Useful data about MCAT scores and women and minority enrollment. Great section with examples of strong personal statements. Outlines of factors influencing selection and opinions of students attending the top medical schools....(wish author would have done this for the more medical schools). Timetable section outlines application process concisely for students in their last 17 months of college...Very helpful book, especially for those of us who have lousy pre-med advisors. I also bought The Insiders Guide to Medical School Admissions by R. Stephen Toyos, M.D. This focusses on med school rather than the application process..Lots of info about residency. Entire section devoted to review for boards and clerkship. M1-M4 are explained in detail. Author breaks med schools down into "Top Guns", "Excellent Schools", "Strong Schools", and "Good Schools". Overall, I felt the [price] was a good deal.

Not very helpful,

This book had the standard information found in most pre med books. Not helpful after the preliminary admissions process. Also, I found that the admissions process at Harvard is very different than the process here in California and the book doesn't address that. The two books that I thought were better - Insider's Guide to ... by Toyos and Princeton review sorry don't have the author.

As someone who reads medical application essays for a living, I also read a lot of admissions books. I think the Goldsteins' book is one of the best. It is comprehesive and deep. It provides a good overview of the admissions process and has excellent sections on writing the AMCAS essay and preparing for interviews. It's only weakness is that it virtually ignores secondary applications and essays.

The entire procedure of applying to medical school is reviewed in this superb text. Many practical tips and examples are given. This has been an invaluable aid for me in applying to med school. This is a must have book.

NOT definitive,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Definitive Guide to Medical School Admission (Paperback)
First, the title is really annoying. It is NOT the definitive guide. Tone is somewhat condescending. For example, advises students to get into highly competitive college because "surrounding yourself with dwarfs will not make you a giant". Overemphasizes U.S. News and World Report Ratings.

This book is incredibly good. I was so confused by the medical school admissions process and I had no where to turn. Fortunately I found it in my college bookstore. The Goldsteins take you from the selection of college majors all the way through the admissions process. It is written in a very friendly and informative style. Dr. Goldstein is a premedical advisor, so he is very current on issues important to premeds. This is the one book on medical school application that really has it all together.

As one who advises premedical students, I frequently refer to this excellent book. This is an important reference that premedical students may use as they prepare their applications for medical school. Every premedical student should read it.

Clearly the best of the guides for students aspiring to be doctors. My copy is wellworn from my use as well as from my friends.

I was accepted to one of the top U.S. medical schools this year in large part because of this terrific book. This work is a common sense, comprehensive, clearly written book that is much better than all of the others I read. And I read just about everything available on the topic. It certainly gave me an edge on the stiff competition. It should be rated six stars.
