Editorial Reviews

Dr. John is the ultimate ambassador of the celebrated New Orleans sound. A brilliant boogie-woogie pianist with an expressive growl who throws rock, blues, R&B, and MArdi Gras bon temps into one immensely satisfying song gumbo.

Most Helpful Customer Reviews

15 of 15 people found the following review helpful By Mike VINE VOICE on February 21, 2007
Format: Audio CD
Dr. John is an artist along the lines of Frank Zappa, Neil Young, Lou Reed...each album and the era that surrounds it is unique. As such, "cherry picking" individual tracks in search of a cohesive "whole" is an exercise in futility. HOWEVER...given the 2-CD, $20 price tag (I actually paid $13.99 for my copy), it's an excellent introduction to all things Rebennack. From the swampy "I Walk On Gilded Splinters" and "Black Widow Spider" (with Mac sounding like Captain Beefheart, fronting the "Freak Out"-era Mothers of Invention) to the lighter, radio-friendly tunes like "Such A Night" and "Right Place Wrong Time," to songs that meet somewhere in the middle like "I Been Hoodood," it's an hour and fifty minute roller coaster ride through Dr. John's career, featuring the quality that's become Rhino Records' trademark.

This is an excellent collection of the best of Dr John. Over the years he has performed in a number of styles, all of which are represented here: blues, jazz, r/b, boogie-woogie etc. well worth picking up for an intro to this musical treasure, if you like what you hear, try his albums In The Right Place and Sun, Moon and Herbs, among many others.
