Biography

The Everly Brothers topped the charts in Britain and America in the late 50s and early 60s with a series of close-harmony hits including “Cathy’s Clown”, “Bye Bye Love” and “All I Have to Do Is Dream”. In all, they enjoyed 26 Billboard Top 40 singles and that achievement was recognised when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1986. Rolling Stone magazine lists them as No.33… Read more in Amazon's Everly Brothers Store

4.0 out of 5 stars + 1/2 stars...Not As Definitive As It Should Have Been, September 20, 2006
This review is from: Definitive Pop (Audio CD)
The Everly Brothers are one of the most influential acts of the rock 'n' roll era, but this recent two-disc set from Rhino is not without its flaws.

BRAVOS: This expands Rhino's 1999 compilation ALL-TIME ORIGINAL HITS from 16 tracks to 30. It includes all of their Top Ten hits, including the million-sellers "Bye Bye Love," "Wake Up Little Susie," "All I Have To Do Is Dream," "Bird Dog" and "Cathy's Clown." [All went to No. 1 except "Bye Bye Love," which peaked at No. 2.]

The Everly's had a huge fan base in England, where they continued to have several hits in the early to mid-sixties that are included here. Released as B-sides in the U.S., "Muskrat" reached No. 20 (1961) and "How Can I Meet Her" reached No. 12 (1962) in the UK. Also, "The Price of Love" failed to chart in the U.S., but made No. 2 in the UK in 1965. [The Everly's last U.S. Top Ten hit was three years earlier!]

BOOS: The Everly's had 27 Top 40 hits in the U.S.; seven of them have been left off this collection. And it's not for lack of room--the 30 songs on this collection could have been squeezed onto a single disc! Missing are tracks like "Claudette," "Take a Message to Mary" and "Poor Jenny."

While Rhino does include their Cadence and later Warner Bros. hits, there is nothing included after 1967's non-charting single "Love of the Common People." The Everly's released five more singles with Warner Bros. over the next three years, including "I'm on My Way Home Again" b/w "Cuckoo Bird" recorded with Clarence White and Gene Parsons of The Byrds; but all failed to chart. They also released a handful of singles on RCA in the early Seventies, including "Ridin' High" b/w "Stories We Could Tell" recorded at John Sebastian's home studio. [Sebastian wrote "Stories We Could Tell" and later recorded his own version with Phil Everly on background vocals.] Moreover, Rhino fails to include anything from their post-reunion era on Mercury. Especially missed is the Paul McCartney-penned single "On the Wings of a Nightingale," which hit UK No. 4 but only hit No. 50 stateside.

Bottom line? This is a great anthology, but if you want the "definitive" collection, you'll have to splurge and get Rhino's 1994 four-disc box set HEARTACHES & HARMONIES. [Running time - Disc 1, 35:08; Disc 2, 36:02] HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

The Definitive Pop Collection is an excellent two CD set by The Everly Brothers. Man, how they could harmonize and sing! Their CDs still sell well today after all these years; and they truly made fantastic contributions to the evolution of music and rock and roll. The sound quality on this CD set is excellent and the artwork is very nicely done. Yes, there could have been a few extra tracks on this CD set; but still what we do get is awesome words and music all the way through!

"Bye Bye Love" starts the first CD off with quite a huge hit for The Everly Brothers. They sing perfectly of how they feel so sad over the loss of their true loves. The guitars work wonders for this number and The Everly Brothers never sounded better! "Wake Up Little Susie" showcases their talents again as they sing this cute little song about having so much fun on a date that they stayed out way too late! "Bird Dog" rocks really well for its time; and I really like "Bird Dog." "Bird Dog" again proves how well these two men could perform a song and make it stand out as a true, timeless hit.

"('Til) I Kissed You" is another awesome ballad performed by The Everly Brothers and they practically croon this number with some mighty fine guitars, drums and percussion! I love it. "When Will I Be Loved" sounds heavenly when The Everly Brothers deliver this completely unblemished; they shine on "When Will I Be Loved." "So Sad (To Watch Good Love Go Bad)" gives us another charming tune that sparkles like gold in their competent hands; and the melody is very pretty. There's also "Love Hurts;" they perform this number with all their hearts and souls. Excellent!

The second CD continues with more outstanding ballads and tunes. "Ebony Eyes" is a love song that sounds so right when The Everly Brothers sing it; and they again harmonize to perfection and beyond! The background vocalists enhance the number even more. Listen also for "Stick With Me Baby;" this is another early rock song that sounds wonderful even today because The Everly Brothers had a truly classic sound.

"Crying In The Rain" puts The Everly Brothers in the spotlight as they sing of a love gone wrong; they sing this with great sensitivity and this amazes me. "That's Old Fashioned (That's The Way Love Should Be)" rocks well as the two brothers explore the joys of dating your sweetheart in a much more innocent, earlier time. I really like "That's Old Fashioned (That's The Way Love Should Be)." "The Price Of Love" has a strong guitar and harmonica arrangement that carries the melody well along with the brothers singing their very best.

After all is said and done, this is a fantastic two CD set highlighting the artistry of The Everly Brothers. Their fans will certainly want this; and people who like early rock and the oldies will cherish this CD set for years to come.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Sound, But Skimpy on the Music, January 3, 2007

Rhino did a great job remastering these songs. But <72 minutes on a 2-CD set??? Either give us more music, or put it on a single CD for less $$.
