Biography

R&B innovator Ray Charles was one of the most important musicians of the 1950s. Despite being blind from childhood, he was hugely successful at fusing elements of blues, country, gospel and doo-wop together to form a kind of proto-soul.

Despite losing his sight at an early age, he never let his disability stop him from being a success and scored several R&B chart hits in the ... Read more in Amazon's Ray Charles Store

Editorial Reviews

The musical brilliance of Ray Charles' seminal, revolutionary, and essentially soul-sational Atlantic Records era is spotlighted on this 30-song double cd.

The title of this set is a bit misleading, you really can't call this a "definitive" collection as it's only from one period of Ray's career, there are a ton classic Ray Charles songs missing from this set. Still, this is absolutely essential music for any music lover, especially if you like Soul, Blues, R&B, and early Rock & Roll.

If you already have Ray's "The Birth Of Soul" box set, you pretty much have everything on this 2-CD set (only two tracks are here that aren't there by my count, "Don't Let The Sun Catch You Cryin'" and "Just For A Thrill"). If you have that set, you probably won't want to buy this one, but if you have neither, then this is a very affordable alternative. That said, you can't go wrong with either (or both). If you prefer to buy just one of them, I'd recommend the larger box set over this one (the more Ray Charles music, the better).

For what it is, this is a great sounding collection of outstanding music. You can't go wrong with this purchase.

now i have his box set, but to use a baseball term and phrase, this is a grand slam, because musically he covered all the bases and this collection does just that, in R&B,Pop,Gospel, Blues,Jazz,etc.. you name and Ray Charles played it and made it his own. he truly was a one man wrecking force and he left his mark on so much music. alot of classic songs here and songs that will still be fresh hundreds of years from now.

Ray Charles was certainly one of a kind. His music reflects experiences he has had in life and Ray sings them like no other. Sure, I like some cuts better than others, but this CD is pretty good all the way around.
