Biography

The Spinners is an American soul music vocal group, active for over 50 years, and with a long run of classic Pop and R&B hits especially during the 1970s. The group, originating from Detroit, still tours regularly as of 2013 although Henry Fambrough is the only original member.

The group is also listed as the Detroit Spinners, and the Motown Spinners (for their 1960s recordings with ... Read more in Amazon's Spinners Store

This is really an expansion of the single disc The Very Best of the Spinners as all 16 songs from that collection are here (with a few variations; "Mighty Love", "Love Don't Love Nobody", "Living a Little, Laughing a Little", & "They Just Can't Stop It (The Games People Play)" are presented in their LP versions here). The rest of the songs ranch from being very good to barely likeable. Thankfully only a handful of songs are in the latter.

If you looking for an in-depth look at this group's stay at Atlantic Records, this is the way to go (mind you, only one song, "It's a Shame" is from Motown. There are CDs that cover the Spinners' years stay there as well.)

A truly awesome collection of the old school Philly Sound that I had missed esp listening to the latest type of music in the market, Thom Bell was a genius... If you want to enjoy old school jams I would advise you to buy this cd

I have thoroughly enjoyed this double CD. First off, the sound quality is off the charts. I have a lot of CD's, especially from many of the Spinners contemporaries, and none of them sound this good. I find myself listening, and constantly saying to myself "wow, that sounds great". I understand that the "Very Best of Spinners" CD is a better seller than "Definitive Soul", but to me, it is an absolute no brainer to purchase this album and get 30 songs. It concerned me that on the Amazon page for this album, "Don't Let the Green Grass Fool You" was spelled wrong, but don't worry, this album is a top notch production. While it is about 5 dollars more, you get 14 more songs, and there is absolutely no way on earth that the "Very Best of Spinners" CD sounds any better.

As far as the music goes, it is Philly Soul at its finest! As many others have pointed out, this is the definition of smooth. It sounds so pleasant and relaxing to my ears, while still being incredibly funky in spots. Some songs utilize the synthesizer, as well as some rocking guitar rifts. My personal favorite songs are "Then Came You", and "Since I been Gone". It was great to see Dionne Warwick featured on two songs, I enjoyed hearing her so much that I am contemplating purchasing one of her albums. Overall, I am extremely satisfied with this purchase, and will go out of my way to recommend it to others.

The Spinners aren't generally spoken about with the reverence of the Temptations, The O'Jays, The Whispers and other R&B groups. Even though they had longevity and until recently were still performing over 50 years after they had started (I am writing this less than 2 weeks after the passing of lead singer Bobbie Smith, R.I.P.), most of their commercial success was compressed into a relatively short period during the early to mid-70's. This anthology will remind you of how many hits they had, the quality of their harmonies and of the production of Thom Bell and Linda Creed and the songwriting. And I DARE you to play "Could It Be I'm Falling In Love" or "Then Came You" and not sing along or play "Sadie" or "Living A Little, Laughing A Little" and not feel it inside. And Philippe Wynne's ad libs were the icing on the cake!

For any person who has follow the Spinners the group's time with Motown, this collection offers a ideal representation of the spirit and talents of these singers. Nearly all of the group's hit singles are reflected in this album, along with to powerful renditions of soul and blues standards. The percipient listener will be able to explore the subtle ways that personnel changes influenced the Spinners's sound over the decades. From G. C. Cameron of the Motown days, through the power-packed years of Philippe Wynne and Atlantic Records, and culminating with the lead vocals of John Edwards, the group had a considerable influence on American popular music. The Definitive Soul album is a must for lovers of strong lead singers and smooth group harmony.

I am a big fan of the Spinners. Their music style cannot be matched by anyone. Phillipe Wynne (sp) was one of the best singers around. His voice had such a soul felt quality that it could make you cry. I could not get all of the hits that I wanted on this collection so I ordered another selection to go with it (Pick of the Litter)

Quite a long time ago, around 1999, I had either this exact CD (don't know, lost it in a move), or had a Spinners CD with all these songs on it. Listening to these songs either on my way to work or home from a 10-12 hour shift, it was a real pick-me-up and kept me alert on the highway. Just rocking all the way home!

Not from Philly!
They may have been from Detroit, but their records were cut in Philadelphia, with the great Thom Bell, who was the producer who epitomized PHILLY SOUL.

You either need to do some research or stop being so literal. Egg is not a flattering facial addition.
