4.0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Stan Getz, January 26, 2007
This review is from: Definitive Stan Getz (Audio CD)
"Stan Getz was one of the rare musicians with a direct line from their minds to their fingers. Whatever occurred to him, he could play on the tenor saxophone, and what occurred to him most often were melodies. He was a superb interpreter of songs that were written by others and one of the most accomplished improvisers in jazz." ~ Doug Ramsey ~

This is a compilation of some of the greatest tunes that defines a genius of saxophone, Stan Getz, who played in all of his recordings a style that speaks of enchantment and mastery of his instrument. He was best known for his Bossa Nova works most notably "The Girl From Ipanema," which was his biggest hit and as written by Doug Ramsey on Liner Notes, Stan Getz used to call it "the song that's putting his children to college." Well, it's true, its popularity then was so overwhelming, and it was the song that launched the sparkling musical careers of Antonio Carlos Jobim and husband and wife, Joćo and Astrud Gilberto.

In this album, he plays tenor sax on all tracks accompanied by some of the masters of jazz in the persons of Oscar Peterson, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Chick Corea, Kenny Barron, Herb Ellis, Ray Brown, Ron Carter, Joćo and Astrud Gilberto, among many others.

The most definitive tracks are "The Girl From Ipanema" and "Desafinado" which features Joćo and Astrud Gilberto on vocals. He was also at ease playing beautiful and timeless standards such as "Early Autumn," "Moonlight In Vermont," "Summertime," "East of the Sun And West of the Moon" and "Night And Day."

Although this CD is not his very best, it's an ideal introduction to the artistry of Stan Getz. It offers a variety of music to suit your taste - classic jazz standards, swing tunes and Bossa Nova.

You might also want to check out some of his greatest recordings, Stan Getz & The Oscar Peterson Trio: The Silver Collection and Verve Jazz Masters 53: Bossa Nova.

5.0 out of 5 stars Admirable compilation!, February 20, 2006
This review is from: Definitive Stan Getz (Audio CD)
There has not been any other case more emblematic of close affinity with the Brazilian music than Stan Getz.

His velvety tune, his unerring musicality, prodigious sense of expression and astonishing emotiveness make of him one of the shining stars I at the moment to make the account of the giants sax players in any time.

These selections are remarkable compilations with outstanding soloists, which constitutes by itself the best testimony of his notable grandness.

Getz must be remembered far beyond Desafinado and Girl from Ipanema. And maybe we would need a full documented biography which reflected his multiple skills. Summertime is a very personal and authoritative version; the musical support of Gary Burton in the vibraphones is fantastic.

Absolutely recommended.!
