5.0 out of 5 stars Punk was rooted in rock, April 5, 2011
This review is from: Definitive Story of Cbgb: the Home of Us Punk (Audio CD)
And this CD set will prove it to you. I wasn't expecting this, but it's really got it's roots in the 70s and it's really got it's roots in rock n roll, some of it a lot less "punk-rock" than I'd thought. I'd forgotten about that side of N.Y. punk, before it went new wave or before it went really hardcore in the 80s and on. You can hear a progression building up in the songs and they've got a great selection of artists, both known and obscure (to me at least). Here's the blurb from the back of the cover:

"CBGB was home to one of the greatest explosions of creativity in rock history. Hilly Kristal opened his club in late 1973 in a run-down Bowery bar and oversaw the rise of Punk as bands such as the Ramones, Blondie and the Patti Smith Group rewrote the book. This double CD traces the history of the movement from the early forefathers - The Velvet Underground, NeW York Dolls, Iggy Pop - to the incendiary nights when the likes of the The Dictators and the Dead Boys tore the roof off the joint."

Here's the trackslist with the artists.

Looking back at punk of this era, and trying to define it, it was a mix of attitude and the absurd. Certainly the absurd. And certainly the attitude. Another one of rock's b@stard children. Listen to these tunes and feel the pedigree.

If you grew up in the 70s, this may be your soundtrack. These guys probably helped Generation X find itself.
