I can't say I am an audiophile because usually I try to spend under $500.00 a speaker. I do love audio, but haven't every been able to shell out the big bucks. I have been looking at Definitive Technology Speakers for years. My HT and Audio magazines always seem to praise them. Wonderful full sound. 3.0 out of 5 stars Good potential, but you NEED a subwoofer
I bought a pair of Mythos Two speakers to replace an old pair of PSB Alpha A/Vs that I use for watching TVs and listening to music. After 30-50 hours of breaking-in, I can tell you that there's the POTENTIAL for some really good sound here, but by themselves, the Mythos Two speakers will leave you disappointed.

I have been looking at Definitive Technology Speakers for years. My HT and Audio magazines always seem to praise them. Wonderful full sound. Crisp highs, warm mids, decent bass for speakers this size. Build Quality is fantastic, Wall mounting was easy. I am using them for a workout room. They would be great for a HT setup. Binding posts were flexible. So...some may argue that I am not really in the realm of high-end, but these speakers make me feel that it cant get much better.

5.0 out of 5 stars Definitiv-ly 'NOT' Bose, January 5, 2010

This review is from: Definitive Technology Mythos 2 On-Wall Speaker (Single, Silver) (Electronics)
I had to write this review, for the same reason I got slammed for thinking my Bose Acoustimass 15s were as good as high end speakers. Well, I listened to someone on the 'Amazon Speaker Community' and gave a listen to Definitive Speakers just for the fun of it. First I have to apologize to the one who thought my ears needed tuning. I'm sorry I don't remember your name, but you were correct. I did some researching for prices, since Mythos 2s are 549.00 EACH! I stumbled back on Amazon and found them here in SILVER for 199.00 EACH!(Silver Only). I did the math and ordered 5 of the 2s.(Thank you Amazon!) I was not too impressed with the Def Cube Sub though. I did find a Polk Micro 1000 I liked. But it was 1,000.00. So, I did another search, this time bringing me to [...]. The Polk Micro Sub was on sale for 349.00. So, I jumped on it! Now, to the point. The Bose 15s cost 1,300.00. I bought all of these HIGH END Speakers for just 45.00 more than the Bose. The SOUND? The MUSIC? There is ABSLOUTLEY no comparison. I can actually watch movies and hear dialog not just from the main person, but also understand those around the main actor also. Special effects? I won't bore you with the details! Now down to the nitty gritty, the MUSIC. I can tell you, that musicians in the background are worth their salary now. Instruments I could see being played in concerts before, I can now really hear. And, no more EAR RINGING. So, if your looking at Bose, go ahead. But you'll be making a mistake, if you don't do yourself a favor and shop around like I did. I got 3,750.00 worth of speakers for just 1,344.00. Only a few bucks over the 'Locked' in price for a Bose Acoustimass 15 system. I just wish I could remember the person who turned me on to the Definitive Speaker line, which I didn't even know existed. Thanks again!---Update:2/20/10. The Mythos 2s are now SOLD OUT in Silver. The price is now full retail for the 2s, since they are only in Black, they cost 549.00 each. Pretty steep compared to the Bose Acoustimass 15s now. But, that shouldn't stop you from looking for a bargin in a set of speakers that will still out perform them. I got 450.00 for my Bose 15s, after even 10 years of use on Ebay. So some people still look to buy Bose systems. Go figure? SHOP AROUND!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good potential, but you NEED a subwoofer, December 13, 2011

I bought a pair of Mythos Two speakers to replace an old pair of PSB Alpha A/Vs that I use for watching TVs and listening to music. After 30-50 hours of breaking-in, I can tell you that there's the POTENTIAL for some really good sound here, but by themselves, the Mythos Two speakers will leave you disappointed.

The crux of the problem is that these things have no bass. The specs say they go down to 35Hz, but they're not even close...my Alphas go down to 65Hz, and they definitely have much more bass than these. I'd love to get a meter on these things to see just how low they go...maybe 100Hz if you're lucky. I've heard that DefTech is a little "optimistic" with their frequency numbers, and these speakers are definitely proof of that.

However, mids do sound pretty good. Vocals can jump out at you with surprising realism...while working on other things, I was twice startled by how real a voice in a song sounded. The highs are pretty decent as well. There's...just...no...bass.

I mounted them to the wall on either side of my TV. The included brackets are sturdy, but actually attaching the speakers to them was a nightmare. There are two keyholes on the bracket that the speakers attach to, and a number of padded metal "fingers" protruding from the edges of the bracket to stabilize the speakers. Two stopped screws attach to the back of the speakers, and they slide into the keyholes. As designed, I could NOT get the speakers to mount...they simply wouldn't go into the keyholes. Ended up loosening the screws on the back of the speakers, and pounding down the fingers a bit with a hammer before the speakers would mount, and even then it was a very tight fit.

In any case, I'll be shopping around for a sub, and will update my review accordingly.

Didn't have room for floor-standers and wanted something sleek. These fit the bill and, even though our living room is quite large, sound very good! I chose the silver because I really like that solid aluminum appearance, -being discontinued, they cost less as well. The Wife Approval Factor is definitely a plus, and that would apply to the black ones just as well! We all wish such great products as these were less expensive, but if you're gonna play you gotta pay.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Sound and Great Appearance!, January 10, 2011

I use two of these speakers for my left and right channels in my theater system. Amazon is an authorized retailer and we got a great deal during a "deal of the day" offer. I have been very impressed with these speakers. The aluminum cabinet and glass bases look very elegant. The construction is solid, and there are no rattles or cabinet noise.

The binding posts allow for several different speaker wire connections. I wish they were a little lower on the speaker so the wire could just connect at the base instead of routing them a couple inches up the back.

The sound quality is great, and they blend well with my other Definitive speakers. (I've never tried mixing them with any speaker from other brands, so I can't comment on that.) These speakers have been able to handle anything I can throw at them. I am very pleased.

Also, I had some questions about set up. I gave Definitive Technology a quick call, and they were very helpful over the phone. If you're not savvy in tech set-up, the company's superior product support might be able to help you out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Home Theater Speakers, May 15, 2010

This review is from: Definitive Technology Mythos 2 On-Wall Speaker (Single, Silver) (Electronics)
The speakers were easy to install on the walls and worked well with our SONY XBR2 46" TV. The sound is 2nd to none for the price. We currently have 4 Mythos 2s and a Mythos 8 center which gives us Big Sound even sounds nice with iPod. With buying the Mythos 2s for $800 and $749 for center it allowed for plenty to get a Sub! Get them before their gone!

These speakers rock. They match perfect with my Mythos ones front left and right speakers and my Mythos eight center. I use them as surrounds. Love the mounting hardware that comes with the speakers. Definitive rocks. I added a supercube 2, and a Klipsch synergy sub 12 for each side of the couch and the put a Martin Logan Dynamo in the front firing forward. WOW WOW WOW, all hooked to an elite sc07. I just don't see how it can get any better.

3.0 out of 5 stars Bose Still Rules, October 16, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Definitive Technology Mythos 2 On-Wall Speaker (Single, Silver) (Electronics)
I just replaced a Bose Lifestyle 28 system, My new set-up is (4)Mythos 2,s(you can use the 2,s for surround also).A Mythos 3 center with a new Onkyo 806 Receiver, and a new supercube 111,I added a Panamax power conditioner and a #1 rated LG blueray player. After setting it all up and turning it on, I am not impressed...The speakers are just ok,receiver ok,supercube ok, but the real surprise was the power conditioner,it really did clean up the picture and I have FIOs,enough that I took notice, also the LG Blueray has a better picture then my 6 year old Denon upconverson model. I replaced the 10 year old Bose because technology keeps changing, back then their was Dolby and DTS. now their is THX,Dolby-HD, DTS-HD and another dozen formats in between.when I bought the Bose all the other speaker companys were saying"Whats a Subwoofer"?They were 10 miles ahead of everyone else,I read all the reviews for Definitives speakers and subwoofers,Receivers and Jumped in..My advice after owning both, take a Second look at a Bose Lifestyle system. really.. tiny little speakers, receiver is 1/3 the size,Simple to operate and cheaper than this set up by about $1700... At this Price.Point you want to be "WoW"ed UPDATE:November 28.....After not being impressed with this system,I replaced the supercube III with a supercube II and I hired a professional installer to come in and tweak the subwoofer and receiver settings(good guy, usually you wouldn,t get someone to come in for such a small job) he like the speakers, receiver,Subwoofer and Audioquest $100(each) front speaker wires(x 3)and Audioquest sub 1 cable I was using,so he had no issues with any part of the set up.Afterwards system sounds better,So here is the final grade...on Home theatre, a B Plus (good).... listening to the radio a D (Lousy), a B and a D equals a "c" luckily for me this is a dedicated home theatre... The Bose Lifestyle I had was a B with home Theatre and an A plus with Music...and that was a 10 year old system with regular size speaker cubes and older model subwoofer,...Hope this helps you make a decision.....
