Product Description

Definitive Technology is pleased to present their amazing powered subwoofers, a 9-time Grand Prix award-winning range of active subwoofers with built-in high-power, high-current amplifiers and electronic crossovers which achieve a unique combination of delicate musicality and thunderous power, for the absolute ultimate in bass performance. When you listen to any of Definitive Technology's award-winning powered subwoofers, you will discover true state-of-the-art bass performance, extending down well beyond the limits of audibility into the range of purely physical subsonic energy that shakes the body and stirs the soul. This has long been the most exciting, sought after and rarest of audio achievements, and now it is yours for the asking.

From the Manufacturer

The Low Frequency Effects (LFE) of a movie’s soundtrack bring excitement, realism and just plain fun to action, adventure and sci-fi movies. Accurate reproduction of the bottom octaves of all music, especially pipe organ, symphonic and rock add that last touch to bring you true you-are-there realism to your listening. Worry not, Definitive has bass down pat. The ProSub 800 features a 300 Watt amplifier driving a high-excursion 8 inch front-mounted direct-radiating woofer that is pressure-coupled to an 8 inch Low Bass radiator on the bottom of the enclosure. The net radiating area of the ProSub 800 is 27% greater than a single 10 inch woofer but with better speed, pitch definition and control.

Definitive Technology ProSub 800
Pressure-coupled Low Bass Radiator on the enclosure bottom works to produce deep, soul-stirring bass

Side-mounted volume control makes bass level adjustment easy and convenient

Advanced MOSFET Technology Amplifier

The ProSub 800 incorporates Definitive Technology's unique digitally-coupled Infinite Power Source amplifiers with high-current direct coupled power supplies and discrete MOSFET output devices to ensure perfect high-definition resolution and reproduction of the most dynamic program material and demanding sub-bass transients. Construction quality is absolutely state-of-the-art with only the highest quality components used including mil-spec glass epoxy circuit boards and precision resistors and capacitors for many years of faultless superior performance. In addition, tremendous current reserves, high peak-power capabilities and two protection circuits ensure that these subwoofers can never be overdriven. There is also a convenient, signal-sensing, auto on/off feature.

Superior Detail and Lightning-Fast Transient Response

The powerful, high-definition driver delivers rock-solid low distortion bass, reaching down to the lowest subsonic frequencies, with an outstanding quality of superior transient response. The special ultra-stiff, low-mass cone (for super-fast transient response) is joined to a butyl rubber surround and long-throw voice coil and spider. The incredibly rigid baskets are engineered to hold the massive magnet structures and large voice coils in absolute alignment. The high temperature voice coil is aluminum wound with triple insulated ultra-pure copper wire and baked in epoxy for power handling in excess of 750 watts.

Rock Solid Non-Resonant Cabinets Ensure Pure Low Distortion Response

The cabinet of a loudspeaker plays a large part in its sonic performance. Resonance and vibration can add unwanted distortion as well as drain away important energy from the system. Definitive's subwoofers utilize monocoque cabinets, which have been specifically engineered to be totally inert and vibration free, to ensure you of absolutely pure sonic reproduction. Monocoque means that the cabinet is of a unitized construction where all panels are permanently joined together into one solid structure. The cabinet walls themselves are high-density MDF fused together by space-age polymer adhesives. The front and rear baffles are extra thick and the cabinets each incorporate multiple internal braces to ensure total solidity.

Completely Adjustable Electronic Crossovers Assure a Perfect Match to Your System and Room

The sophisticated low distortion electronic crossover is a masterpiece of design and execution. It contains a complete range of hookups, circuitry and features which allow the subwoofers to be connected and perfectly blended with any system as well as adjusted for optimum performance in any room.

The ProSub 800 features a continuously adjustable low pass filter control which allow you to choose a high frequency roll-off of from 40 to 150 Hz. This unique "dual stage" roll-off is extremely steep which ensures perfect blending with your main speakers as well as eliminating unwanted midrange from the subwoofer. This is especially important because it gives you much greater flexibility in placing your subwoofer in your room without being able to hear where it is located. There is also a separate low-level direct LFE input for Dolby Digital which bypasses the crossover network. The subwoofer level control is conveniently mounted on the side of the enclosure instead of the rear panel, making it easy to reach. It allows you to perfectly adjust the volume of the subwoofer to match your system and room as well as to fulfill your own personal sonic preferences.

So I started with a $150.00 subwoofer (private label through Circuit city). It was rated a 4.8 out of 5 so I gave it shot. Everbody said "great sub for the money". Well it was just that, it was extremely muddy sounding. Then I went to a Klipsh Synergy 10" for $280 through Best Buy. Again great reviews, plus it was $120 off the $399 retail. Much clearer in sound, great power and fills the room BUT the sub had terrible definition for bass guitar. Sooo I finally just stepped it up and spent the extra buck (and came across a deal) to go to the Definitive Tech ProSub 800. WOW what a difference! Not only did the bass rolloff like a waterfall but the definition was perfection. The funniest thing is that this has to be the SMALLEST, MOST, POWERFUL sub on the market. Everything I saw was obnoxious in size...this thing is so small! So if you aren't able to hide your sub behind anything, this unit can easily be out in the open and not be a distraction. My sub is paired up with(2) ProMontior 800 front speakers and Yamaha V663 receiver. I also had (2) existing in-wall Jamo speakers for surround. All together the system sounds phenomonal for music...plus its all so small and clean looking. I have an open concept space (vaulted ceiling and loft). Combo great room and dining room is about 525 sq. ft and the sound radiants thougout the space.
I was lucky enough to get this ProSub with minor cosmetic damage on Amazon for $299. After hearing and seeing it, I would highly recommend this sub for $399, personally I think they could get away with $499 since it offers premium bass definition in such a industry leading small size.

I'm very satisfied with the sound and functionality of the Definitive sub. The bass is bone-rattling and will shake your whole house, but it is very clean sounding with no vibration in the case itself. I've got it connected with a single Monster subwoofer cable to my Onkyo receiver. Very easy setup. The appearance is very elegant. I like the volume control on the side. The Prosub 800 is perfect for a small living room.

The only gripe I have is that it has an auto-off feature. If the sub doesn't receive a bass signal after about an hour, it shuts off. So when I'm watching a TV program or movie with lots of dialogue it will shut off and then pop back on (with a noticeable popping sound) when there is either an explosion or loud music. It is a small gripe because you never have to worry about leaving it on accidentally.

Listening to music is a dream with this sub. I'm in to rock and heavy metal, so this sub makes it seem as though a machine gun is going off in my house (scares the dog). I love it.

This little sub can deliver a hell of a punch when it needs to and then remind you that it's got some big power when it needs to give you a rumble. The instructions are simple to read and informative enough to feel like you just plugged it in and got it going right out of the box. This sub will definitely shake you home.

This is a great deal for a subwoofer, especially one from a high-end speaker manufacturer. They check everything before it leaves them to get to you so you should receive a perfectly made subwoofer. The construction is solid and there is nothing on it that feels cheap.

I tried it with Dark Knight and the sounds were just as creepy as when I first saw it in the the theater. The rumbling and humming in the background just set the mood.

I would totally recommend getting this sub, whether you've got to spend a little extra or you get to save a little more, this sub is totally worth it.

I am using this with a Yamaha RX-V730 A/V Receiver and Definitive Technology SSA-50 Single Speaker Array. Dark Knight played from an HBO HD recording on a TiVo Series 3 HD in 5.1.

And with Amazon Prime you can get it the next day for $3.99.

First I'd like to mention that I've had a more than spoiled experience with subwoofers in the past. I have multiple family members who own subwoofers with price tags that could qualify as a nice down payment on a car. Obviously these very expensive subs have the capability of giving you an experience that rivals even movie theaters. But with that said, reviewing this sub (along with all over speakers out there) you HAVE to make the price a key point of your review. And with doing that, I give this sub top marks.

I have this sub paired with a 775 watt Harman Kardon receiver, 2 Klipsch F-20 floor standers, and a Klipsch reference series center channel (no rears yet, I'm a component by component shopper due to budget restrictions). I currently live in an apartment, so at first I was against investing in a sub, and had high hopes my towers would fulfill my low bass needs throughout the course of my apartment life. I found after about 4 months, that wasn't the case. So begins the sub shopping.

The first thing that caught my attention about this sub over many others in the same price range, was its physical size. It has the enclosure size of 8" subs that are 3 times its price. It weighs a nice, quality, 28 pounds or so. And has a very respectable 300 watt internal AMP. After listening to it in a store, I was impressed with its bass tightness and speed, and after purchasing and setting up in my apartment, those impressions remained the same. This little thing can shake your theater room in a nice tight way.

I have yet to hear the sub bottom out, but then again, I haven't put its volume above the half way mark for a movie yet. When watching a bass heavy blu-ray such as "Inception" or "Iron Man 2", it never bottoms out or distorts, and remains crisp and clear.
