So I started with a $150.00 subwoofer (private label through Circuit city). It was rated a 4.8 out of 5 so I gave it shot. Everbody said "great sub for the money". Well it was just that, it was extremely muddy sounding. Then I went to a Klipsh Synergy 10" for $280 through Best Buy. Again great reviews, plus it was $120 off the $399 retail. Much clearer in sound, great power and fills the room BUT the sub had terrible definition for bass guitar. Sooo I finally just stepped it up and spent the extra buck (and came across a deal) to go to the Definitive Tech ProSub 800. WOW what a difference! Not only did the bass rolloff like a waterfall but the definition was perfection. The funniest thing is that this has to be the SMALLEST, MOST, POWERFUL sub on the market. Everything I saw was obnoxious in size...this thing is so small! So if you aren't able to hide your sub behind anything, this unit can easily be out in the open and not be a distraction. My sub is paired up with(2) ProMontior 800 front speakers and Yamaha V663 receiver. I also had (2) existing in-wall Jamo speakers for surround. All together the system sounds phenomonal for music...plus its all so small and clean looking. I have an open concept space (vaulted ceiling and loft). Combo great room and dining room is about 525 sq. ft and the sound radiants thougout the space.
I was lucky enough to get this ProSub with minor cosmetic damage on Amazon for $299. After hearing and seeing it, I would highly recommend this sub for $399, personally I think they could get away with $499 since it offers premium bass definition in such a industry leading small size.

Best Sub on the Market!,

I'm very satisfied with the sound and functionality of the Definitive sub. The bass is bone-rattling and will shake your whole house, but it is very clean sounding with no vibration in the case itself. I've got it connected with a single Monster subwoofer cable to my Onkyo receiver. Very easy setup. The appearance is very elegant. I like the volume control on the side. The Prosub 800 is perfect for a small living room.
The only gripe I have is that it has an auto-off feature. If the sub doesn't receive a bass signal after about an hour, it shuts off. So when I'm watching a TV program or movie with lots of dialogue it will shut off and then pop back on (with a noticeable popping sound) when there is either an explosion or loud music. It is a small gripe because you never have to worry about leaving it on accidentally. Listening to music is a dream with this sub. I'm in to rock and heavy metal, so this sub makes it seem as though a machine gun is going off in my house (scares the dog). I love it.

Small But Big,

This little sub can deliver a hell of a punch when it needs to and then remind you that it's got some big power when it needs to give you a rumble. The instructions are simple to read and informative enough to feel like you just plugged it in and got it going right out of the box. This sub will definitely shake you home.
This is a great deal for a subwoofer, especially one from a high-end speaker manufacturer. They check everything before it leaves them to get to you so you should receive a perfectly made subwoofer. The construction is solid and there is nothing on it that feels cheap. I tried it with Dark Knight and the sounds were just as creepy as when I first saw it in the the theater. The rumbling and humming in the background just set the mood. I would totally recommend getting this sub, whether you've got to spend a little extra or you get to save a little more, this sub is totally worth it. I am using this with a Yamaha RX-V730 A/V Receiver and Definitive Technology SSA-50 Single Speaker Array. Dark Knight played from an HBO HD recording on a TiVo Series 3 HD in 5.1. And with Amazon Prime you can get it the next day for $3.99.

Bought this sub after weeks of research and testing. I tested everything from definitive tech, phase tech, mirage, klipsch, polk, and many others and this sub fit the bill in both size and sound quality for my 17x13 room. Because it is down firing you feel very explosion the seat of the pants no matter where the sub is located. If your looking for some thump in a small package you cant go wrong with this sub.

Awesome bang for the buck!,
This review is from: Definitive Technology ProSub 800 120v Speaker (Single, Black) (Electronics)
First I'd like to mention that I've had a more than spoiled experience with subwoofers in the past. I have multiple family members who own subwoofers with price tags that could qualify as a nice down payment on a car. Obviously these very expensive subs have the capability of giving you an experience that rivals even movie theaters. But with that said, reviewing this sub (along with all over speakers out there) you HAVE to make the price a key point of your review. And with doing that, I give this sub top marks.
I have this sub paired with a 775 watt Harman Kardon receiver, 2 Klipsch F-20 floor standers, and a Klipsch reference series center channel (no rears yet, I'm a component by component shopper due to budget restrictions). I currently live in an apartment, so at first I was against investing in a sub, and had high hopes my towers would fulfill my low bass needs throughout the course of my apartment life. I found after about 4 months, that wasn't the case. So begins the sub shopping. The first thing that caught my attention about this sub over many others in the same price range, was its physical size. It has the enclosure size of 8" subs that are 3 times its price. It weighs a nice, quality, 28 pounds or so. And has a very respectable 300 watt internal AMP. After listening to it in a store, I was impressed with its bass tightness and speed, and after purchasing and setting up in my apartment, those impressions remained the same. This little thing can shake your theater room in a nice tight way. I have yet to hear the sub bottom out, but then again, I haven't put its volume above the half way mark for a movie yet. When watching a bass heavy blu-ray such as "Inception" or "Iron Man 2", it never bottoms out or distorts, and remains crisp and clear. I'd like to mention though that at half volume or less during those same movies, putting your hand on the subwoofer shows you that it's working its butt off. I don't know what the difficulty of blowing out a home theater sub these days is, but I'm not willing to put it to the test (feel free to comment on that topic if you have any knowledge of it). I have this sub set to output LFE signals only, which is my personal favorite setting. For the first month or so it was hooked up, I inadvertently had my receiver sending left/right+LFE frequencies to the sub, which the sub still took like a champ. But I think the sound stage is fuller with the sub only taking care of the LFE range. But all in all, awesome sub for movies, music and games. Couldn't recommend more for an addition to a good, middle range home theater system. And after reading some other surprising user reviews out there, I'd like to say I feel this sub is waaaay to nice to be hooked up with computer speakers! This should be rocking full out home theater systems.

DefTech does it again! AWESOME SUBWOOFER!,
This review is from: Definitive Technology ProSub 800 120v Speaker (Single, Black) (Electronics)
After months of researching different models and brands of subwoofers, I finally decided to purchase the Definitive Technology ProSub 800.
I really wanted the older ProSub 100, but the only one I could find was an international model that runs on 240v and I didn't feel like purchasing a converter too. I found an online electronics store that had an open-box item that was slightly discounted, but I was a bit leery because and wasn't sure if their description was accurate and that the product really was in perfect condition. Regardless of whatever doubts I had, I purchased the subwoofer anyway. I immediately opened the box and the product was in perfect condition! I couldn't wait to hook it up, so after work, I went home and used the LFE port on the back of my receiver with a Monster Cable Subwoofer Cable to the subwoofer. After a few days of "testing" I noticed that the red light on the back of the subwoofer would go off after about 15-30 minutes of use. I thought that maybe I had a defective unit, and was contemplating contacting the manufacturer. I read through the manual and this subwoofer does have an auto on/off feature. However, the subwoofer shouldn't have been turning itself off. Also, it wouldn't turn back on unless the subwoofer cable, fuse or power cable was unplugged. Eventually, I decided to try hooking the subwoofer to my receiver via the high level speaker inputs and then hooking my front left and right speaker to the subwoofer. Oddly enough, this totally corrected the auto on/off problem and the subwoofer works perfectly fine now. Here are my impressions now that the subwoofer works as it should: Size - The subwoofer is rather small compared to some of the other ones I've seen. The footprint is about the size of my 15" Dell laptop. It's surprising the amount of sound and rumble you can get out of this thing. Design - I do like the fact that the volume control is on the side of the subwoofer. It is definitely more convenient; however, now that the subwoofer volume is set, I doubt I will ever need to adjust. Also, I like the fact that this subwoofer only has 1 LFE input. Sound - This subwoofer sounds great. I've paired it with a 600w receiver and ProMonitor 100 and ProCenter 100 speakers and as many digital audio connections as possible. It provides a reasonable amount of rumble with the volume turned only half way up. The addition of the subwoofer makes a huge improvement on the overall sound quality of my home theater system and I am extremely happy with my purchase. I would recommend this subwoofer to anyone.

Surprising amount of bass. Once I had the crossover properly dialed in with the rest of the system the level of bass is excellent. Plenty of punch when needed and offers the perfect level of bass at various tones. It's Definitive! Great quality.
