Product Description

Product Description

The goal of the Definitive design team was to create state-of-the-art loudspeakers which offered unsurpassed sophisticated technology and lifelike musical and cinematic reproduction combined in sleek and stylish designs which could be easily and attractively placed in your home environment. Their success in achieving these goals is immediately apparent when you listen to your favorite music or movie through Definitive speakers. The elegant slender towers seem to disappear in a huge natural soundstage which extends in a three-dimensional arc beyond the speakers from left to right, and exhibits front to back depth which, at times, can be almost startling in its ability to recreate the illusion of live music or cinematic action being performed in your room (which will seem to be almost magically expanded in size). Thousands of man-hours of critical listening, design processes utilizing the most advanced computer loudspeaker development programs available and proprietary engineering investigations at the NRC (the world's most advanced loudspeaker research facility) have combined to produce loudspeakers like no other in the world. The spectacular three-dimensional imaging, awesome deep bass response and silky smooth high definition linearity of the Definitive Technology BP10B, BP8B, and BP6B are the result of the utilization and integration of a myriad of technological advancements and breakthroughs (including the latest state-of-the-art components and technology developed for our flagship BP3000 Series loudspeakers) which have been combined to create unmatched instruments for the reproduction of music or movies in your home. They truly recreate reality that totally suspends disbelief.

The Sonic Superiority of Bipolar Loudspeakers

Definitive Technology's BP6B is a revolutionary audiophile-engineered, designer-styled loudspeaker intended for musical reproduction and home theater systems of the highest quality. This full-range bipolar (front and rear) radiating system combines the lush spacious soundstaging, lifelike depth-of-field, razor-sharp resolution and pinpoint imaging of the finest dipolar panel loudspeakers with the extended bass response, high-efficiency, wide dynamic range and easy-to-position convenience of the best conventional box systems. Thousands of man-hours of critical listening and engineering utilizing the most advanced computer loudspeaker development programs available--along with fundamental research at the world's most advanced loudspeaker research facility--have combined to create unmatched instruments for the reproduction of music or movies in your home.

Bipolar design fits a huge soundscape
into a slim 7" x 11" footprint

Superior Definitive Technology

Many experts and audiophiles agree that bipolar speakers are superior for both music and home theater. Each speaker incorporates two complete sets of drivers, one facing forward and the other facing to the rear. Definitive's speakers radiate the full sonic spectrum both forward and rearward in an omni-directional pattern, exactly as sound is produced in real life.

The sonic benefits you hear are dramatic. This unique technology provides you with a lifelike balance of early-arrival sound information, which provides focus, clarity and location data, and properly delayed late-arrival information, which conveys the lush three-dimensional soundstage of a live music or cinematic performance. This combination creates a huge soundfield that is rich, warm, ultra-clear and vibrantly alive. Bipolar technology assures a superb panorama of lifelike sound for every listener wherever they are in the room. Most importantly, it will make the walls of your room seem to disappear, effectively expanding the size of your room into the sound space of the recoded event your system is reproducing. These elegant, slender towers provide a huge natural soundstage which extends in a three-dimensional arc beyond the speakers, with front-to-back depth that is almost magical in its ability to recreate the illusion of live music or cinematic action actually being performed in your room.

Multiple High-Definition Drivers and a Sweeter Tweeter

The BP6B utilizes two high definition bass/midrange drivers for significant performance advantages in the areas of bass reproduction, lifelike midrange clarity and dynamic range. These sophisticated bass/midrange drivers incorporate deeply drawn mineral-filled polymer cones, butyl rubber surrounds and dustcaps, high temperature vented voice coils and massive magnet structures. This combination of features assures high definition, superb transient response, high efficiency, high power handling and extended bass response. In addition, they are assembled utilizing an aerodynamically designed basket to minimize internal reflections off the back of the cone and preserve magnetic integrity under all conditions.

The moving coil dome tweeters Definitive developed for the top-of-the-line BP7000 Series are also used in the BP6B. They utilize a specially annealed pure aluminum 1-inch dome, suspended by a silk surround and acoustically loaded by a precisely configured phase plug/lens--all engineered to assure perfectly controlled, absolutely linear movement. This results in velvety smooth extended response beyond 30 kHz, greatly reduced distortion, improved transient response, wider dispersion and notably higher definition. Magnetic fluid damping is incorporated for ultra-high power handling.

Phase-Coherent Linkwitz-Riley Crossover Networks

The crossover network of a loudspeaker is the real heart of the system, as it is responsible for perfectly blending together the sound of the various drivers into a musically seamless whole. The sophisticated Linkwitz-Riley design used in the BP6B equalizes the drivers for linear phase and frequency response. This preserves the phase coherence, transient response and dynamic integrity of the signal for absolutely lifelike music and home theater reproduction in your home.

Monocoque, Non-Resonant, Low-Diffraction Cabinets

The cabinet of a loudspeaker plays a large part in its sonic performance. Diffraction--the secondary radiation of sound caused by cabinet edges, grille frames and other protrusions--can color the sound of a loudspeaker. The design of the BP6B reduces diffraction to an absolute minimum by flush mounting drivers on extremely narrow baffles with radial edges, which are covered by a frameless grille "sock." In addition, the resonant vibration of a loudspeaker's cabinet walls and baffles can also impart unwanted coloration. Definitive's monocoque cabinets are constructed of high-density medite with 1" thick front and rear baffles, foam dampening pads and internal braces. This virtually eliminates resonant cabinet coloration which could otherwise interfere with the pure sound produced by the high definition drivers. The BP6B also includes an additional brace panel that separates the front and rear drivers.

  • 2002 Center Channel Speaker: Definitive's 2000 series of left/center/right channel speakers have always led the industry with the best-sounding shielded center channels available. OK, a true story (owners of bipolar speakers can probably relate to this). I finally realized that the overpriced and seriously disappointing Yamaha speakers that came with the Yamaha HTIB system that I bought last year were never going to produce a very convincing home theater experience. So out I went to audition new speakers to replace those Yamaha speakers.

After visiting several local audio/home theater stores and auditioning numerous Polk, Klipsch, Boston Acoustics, JBL, and other brands of bookshelf and tower speakers along the way, I couldn't say that any one of those speakers created an overly impressive soundfield. Granted, many of them were great sounding speakers. But they all created a very noticeable and unacceptable presence, and sounded like so much "sound in a box". Some of speakers had a more objectionable "boxy" presence than others. At that point I found myself standing in the speaker showroom and asking the sales person, "Is that all you've got"? The sales person said, "Well, I've got some Definitive Technology towers". By that time I thought I'd already heard the best speakers they had for the money. I really wasn't expecting much so I told him to go ahead and fire them us. Then he switched on the the Definitve Technology BP6B's. The minute the BP6B's came to life, the front soundfield exploded and expanded into an enormous and very life-like presence, all without the speakers sounding anything like just "sound in a box". In fact, the bipolar design of these speakers gives them a very airy and spatial quality with an almost stealth-like ability to mask their physical location. Then I asked the sales person to switch back and forth between the BP6B's and the other speakers that I'd already listened to.

When replacing my old speakers used in my home theater, I asked for advice from Amazon tech services. They recommended these Definitive Technology BP6's as really good speakers but not too expensive. Was she ever right! These are the best I've ever heard and my friend who years ago bought $5000 speakers agreed that these are REALLY good(he wouldn't say as good) but I think they are terrific and so was the advice.

I have a problem... I am a speaker collector. While I don't own the best of the best, I have 20+ speakers.. Sony, Technics, Polk, Kenwood and Pioneer... I have my share. These Definitive Technology BP6's do not disappoint. While these are not the most expensive speakers I have, they do sound the best.

The build is different from any speaker I've ever seen. The top and bottom has a wooden cap that has such a shine they appear to be plastic. Don't get me wrong, they look classy. The rest of the speaker is covered in a mesh 'sock'. They are sleek and look great next to the flat screen. They are also quite heavy for their size (32 lbs each.) It should be noted that the terminals for the speaker are on the bottom.

The most positive aspect about these is the sound. They sound very natural with even highs, mids and lows. I usually play music and movies (too) loud but when I crank them they are louder than I can stand. My Yamaha receiver has an RMS rating of 105 watts/channel and I cannot imagine powering these with 200 watts, or ever needing to. I have the BP6's as my fronts and Definitive Technology 450's as rears and they match up perfectly. I also bought a C/L/R 2002 as a center so there is an even sound... I could not be happier with my set up. As stated in other reviews Def Tech's tend to be a little treble heavy or bright at first but after 20+ hours of 'breaking in' they sound terrific. Also, I had to move them around a little to get the best sound, this is typical with any speaker but more important with bipolar and dipolar speakers.

They are discontinued by the manufacturer so you might find an awesome deal on them at your local mom and pop electronics store. I happened to find an offer I couldn't refuse on Amazon for $170 a piece.

Way back in 1997, I bought a ProCinema 100 system, with the ProMonitor 100s, ProCenter 100, and ProSub 100 ("Thundering Betty"), and had some cheepies for the surrounds. Always LOVED it. As a 40th birthday present to myself, decided to upgrade the fronts and move the 100s to the surrounds. Thought briefly about the BP7006, but living in a townhouse with nice neighbors, I can't go too overboard. Went with the BP6B.

I can't believe how much fuller and richer the sound is, and it was already excellent. They really are stunning. I was dubious about the bi-polar thing, but now I'm a believer. Also purchased a promonitor 2000, so I have perfectly matched tweeters and mids across the front. The ProSub now just quitely hums along at the 40 and below frequencies and really provides a rich and subtle foundation for the rest of the system. From a durability and longevity point of view, I've had my DefTechs for 13 years now. Never a problem, and I just love them. The upgrade was money very well spent. DefTech is known for delivering well priced speakers at each price point. These speakers (really the entry point in the bi-polar setup) were not only a great price, but are just amazing speakers, and if history is a guide will last a long, long time. I would absolutely make the same decision again.
